Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the New Orleans Saints have signed wide receiver Marques Colston to a three-year contract extension. The deal locks up Colston through the 2011 season.
A 2006 seventh-round draft pick out of Hofstra, Colston burst onto the scene with a phenomenal rookie season, catching 70 passes for 1,038 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2007 he was even better, with 98 catches for 1,212 yards and 11 touchdowns
Thanks to the NFL salary structure that saddles late-round picks with minimum-salary contracts, Colston has been one of the most underpaid players in the league the last two years. Although financial details of his new deal haven’t been released, it’s safe to say he’s not anymore.

You can bet that he will not have 98 catches and 11 tds this year. Once they get the money, the production slips.

If production slips, it’ll be because they have better balance not because Colston got the money.

Q-man, you don’t know what you’re talking about. You obviously don’t follow the Saints and you don’t know anything about this man. His production won’t slip, and it certainly won’t be because of this contract. If anything, all signs point to him having a huge year.

You’re right Q Man. Same for Urlacher with his ‘outperforming his contract’ theory. I’m sick of these over priced athletes and their entitlements.

You are right. He won’t have 98 catches and 11 TDs.
He’ll have 105 catches and 13 TDs. The third year is a charm, and Colston got extended because he was a seventh round selection, getting paid like an undrafted FA, but producing like the top WR from that draft class. Wait, he IS the top WR from that draft class.

Saints got a steal on this guy with a 7th round pick. And it’s good he got paid.
This is really the only guy in the NFL that ACTUALLY Outplayed his contract.
Good for Colston.
And Good for the Saints for stepping up for a guy that actually earned it.
But the Saints aint going win the NFC South.

Colston is a jewel in the rough! Saints are looking strong on offense this year.
