In a move that could be interpreted as a sign that franchise quarterback Peyton Manning might not be recovered from knee surgery in time for the start of the regular season, the Indianapolis Colts have added a veteran quarterback. And possibly two.
Per a league source, Quinn Gray has signed with the Colts.
Gray spent his first four seasons with the Jaguars, appearing in 11 games and starting four, all in 2007. He signed with the Texans as a free agent, but was released after failing to sufficiently pick up the offense during offseason workouts.
We’ve also gotten an unconfirmed tip that the Colts have added Jared Lorenzen, who was cut by the Giants on July 23.
The other quarterbacks on the roster are Jim Sorgi, Josh Betts, and rookie Adam Tafralis.

Wasn’t there just an article earlier including Gray on a list of black QB’s who supposedly couldn’t get a job because of their skin color? Looks like there’s one less piece of “evidence” for whoever thought that one up.

You had to figure that the Colts would add one QB just to have an extra QB on the roster to not burn out the ones already there, but 2 sounds like there may actually be at least a possibility that Manning could miss a game or two or more. If they were really confident that Manning would be back for the start of the regular season, all they really needed was an extra body at QB not neccessarily a QB with starting experience like Grey.

Camp fodder.
None of these guys are that good. And not a bad idea to not wear out Sorgi.
Colts might also release a QB they already have I hear. It might be Betts.

If they signed Quinn Gray and Jared Lorenzen, wouldn’t that mean they’ve added 3 QB’s (or at least 2 3/4)?
Anyway, I seem to remember the Colts signing at least 1 extra QB for training camp every year. Since Peyton will most likely miss most of it, as well as playing 5 games instead of the usual 4, I just see it as making sure they have enough arms.
Either that, or Bill Polian and/or Tony Dungy want to be like the Bucs and collect quarterbacks.

Nothing wrong if the Colts really want a QB with some starting experience even if Manning is 100% fine as they say he will be.
The depth behind Manning has always been poor.

Quinn Gray is a jerk. Indy is a perfect fit, I just wonder if maybe the colts are using the peyton injury to get an edge on the jags.

Maybe they just signed him to collect data about the Jaguars and Houston’s playbook. He’ll be cut before the first game.

Peyton might not start the season because he’s hurt and I could care less.

1. Just to clarify, Gray has appeared in 11 games and started 4 - and the four starts were all in 2007. He had appearances in other seasons and obviously Garrard didn’t miss parts of 11 games this year.
2. Gray’s not an every-week starter, but he performed well as a backup with Jacksonville. His contract was not renewed by the Jags because he thinks he’s better than he really is, and believed he should have been starting instead of Garrard. One got a huge extension, the other has already been cut once and couldn’t really find work… so what does that tell you?

Pretty obvious why they signed Quinn Gray.
In the past year, he’s worked with 2 teams that the Colts play twice each (division rivals). I bet they’d like to see what he knows about those teams, to help get an advantage for 4 of their 16 regular season games.
