Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was widely expected to skip much or all of training camp and wait until shortly before the start of the season to sign the franchise tender.
Apparently those expectations were incorrect.
Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that Asomugha reported to training camp this evening and signed the franchise tag, and he will be a full participant on the Raiders’ first day of training camp Thursday. His decision to sign the franchise tag means he’s guaranteed a base salary of $9.8 million this season, and he’ll become a free agent again at the start of the 2009 league year.
In 2006 Asomugha tied for third in the NFL with eight interceptions. In 2007 he had just one pick, mostly because teams almost always threw away from him.

Very nice. And local radio reports Jamarcus checks in at 261 lbs. All the rookies are signed. It’s looking good so far in Napa. I know, you could drum up reports of Al and Lane slap fighting and throwing chairs.

Nnamdi is the most underated db in the league. If this guy was on any other team in the NFL he would be the next Rod Woodson. He is a better cover guy than Champ Bailey right now.

bailey’s lost a step - still a stud. the fact that teams still throw in champ’s direction shows the respect they have for him versus Asomugha…

“Not even close to Champ’s level”.
Chump Bailey is by far the most overrated football of the 21st Century. Somehow he gets talked about as if he’s in a league of his own, when it comes to CB’s. Chump has had exactly one elite season (’06). Besides that he has shown flashes of greatness, and sub par play (for example, Jerry Porter scored 2 TDs, and in addition caught a 52 yard pass, in one game against him in ‘04!). In ‘05 he was amazing 2/3 of the time and horrible in the other 1/3. A lack of consistency, is never a good thing. His first season in Denver was a total disaster and yet he made the Pro Bowl and was talked about as if he was the best corner in the game, when his previous seasons in Washington were nothing but. He was probably a top five corner but he certainly wasn’t Prime Time Version II. Chump had a sub 7 YPA against him last year, which is decent but nothing great. Aso had one in the 3 YPA range, while playing man to man coverage, out on an island by himself, with no safety help, and somehow Chump is better! Lunacy! INT totals isn’t the only criteria in what makes a great corner. How about the 35 passes the entire season thrown Aso’s way . That’s unheard of!

asomugha signing his 1 year deal is something the wagon fans don’t understand. first the guy was a reach in ‘03 then was a bust by ‘05 then considered a top flight corner in ‘07. the thing i love the most about him signing a contract all off season is he wasn’t going to do it.
for all the raider haters and al davis grave diggers the one thing over looked here is he most likely was told by the raiders to just sign the one year deal and we will give you a deal next year. the best thing about this is asomugha is a raider fan from his youth and was a dream to be drafted by the raiders.
he not only will sign a big deal next year, he will finish his career as a raider. all the haters can dream he will be a free agent next year but just remember he can be franchised again and not touched.
unless a new CBA is reached before 2010 there won’t be a cap and asomugha doesn’t get signed in ‘09 then he gets tagged again.
but hey who cares about that the raiders suck and who wants their players anyway. (hahahaha)i find it funny that their are so many hacks like dickey and gay that are deleting their write up about how asomugha screwed the raiders by noyt signing his letter and rep[orting on time.

“widely expected” huh? you guys (media) don’t know sh-t. get over yourselfs already. Asomugha hasn’t said anything all summer so you have nothing to indicate what he will or what do, so please stop pretending like you know how to “expect” anything.

Am hardly surprised to hear that Nnamdi is at camp. I’ve watched extended interviews with him. He appears to be a level headed, mature young guy. He knows that where ever he may be in the future, his pay is tied to both good performance AND good attitude in the present. Just don’t get your hopes up, GeauxSaints12. Big Al loves his corners.
