As the New Orleans Saints try to reclaim the top spot in the NFC South, they’ll be getting started without their first-round pick and second-round pick in the 2008 draft.
And they might be without both of them for a while.
Asked whether he expects defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis and cornerback Tracey Porter to have long holdouts, G.M. Mickey Loomis said, “Right now I do.”
“There’s been very little progress in the first round period and really at the top of the second round there has been very little progress. It’s frustrating. I have to be honest with you. I feel like it’s about the agents of these guys not wanting to look bad as opposed to any concern for getting the player in here, getting him acclimated and getting him going in the right way in their first year in the league. It’s frustrating to be truthful.”
Loomis blames the delay on the attempts by agents to get significant increases over what was paid to players in the same slots a year ago.
“They’re all just waiting, not wanting to be first, not wanting to be embarrassed by a deal that gets done after they do their deal and frankly, they’re looking for some huge increases,” Loomis said. “Yes, they’ll do a deal if you want to give them some outrageous increase. I just don’t know any business where you hand out 20 percent, 30 percent increases every year. You’re not going to be in business very long if you do that.”

As a Saints fan it is very frustrating every year, as the front office approaches signing draft picks with no sense of urgency. Rarely do they get their first rounder in camp on time. They need to stop blaming agents and start engaging in contract talks earlier. Not having a 2nd rounder signed by the start of camp is completely unacceptable; especially since he has the potential to start at our weakest position.

Nevermind the Favre situation, this is an issue the Commissioner needs to get involved in asap. The future financial health of the league is at stake if this situation continues. This is especially concerning when you look at all the unsigned 1st and 2nd Rd picks. Those Loomis comments are very concerning and he is not the 1st GM to voice his unhappiness with this situation. Are the agents running this league?? This is where Goodell needs to step in and make it a public fight to put pressure on these agents, not in what should have been internal matters like “spygate” and tampering. This is what the folks at the four letter network should be hooting and hollering about because this could potentially kill the goose that lays the golden eggs for everyone. How do rookies continue to come in and make millions more than veterans?? How does Matt Ryan make more than Tom Brady?? Think about the absurdity of that for a moment. The NFL needs to start paying for production rather than potential. This has become a joke and one that will kill this league if not resolved in this next cba.

This is why the NFL is becoming more and more of a hassle. It is no longer great to make 10 million and everyone wants 30 million plus. They are rookies, young and never played a NFL game and piss and moan for Tom Brady money. They need to establish a pay scale and if they don’t like it, too bad don’t play and good luck finding a profession that pays millions to keep in shape while playing a GAME. I wouldn’t sign these guys period for that kind of money and you either take the deal or go to the local Wendys for a year.
