ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has advised Packers G.M. Ted Thompson to truly move on without Brett Favre if the team plans to move on without Brett Favre.
And so it apparently was the call from Goodell that got the Packers to begin making calls in an effort to find a trade partner.
As our pal Todd Wright of Sporting News Radio pointed out during our weekly Tuesday night visit, the Packers’ only realistic option is to move Favre to a new team because, if they don’t, Favre will be lurking in the background for the entire 2008 season – and if new starter Aaron Rodgers gets injured or is ineffective the pressure on the Packers to bring Favre back will be immense.
Meanwhile, none of this takes into account Favre’s current mindset. Our most recent information, albeit based on an unconfirmed tip, is that he plans to do nothing. Given the activity of the past 24 hours, it might have been his smartest move yet.

Not really, because this is what is dominating most of the NFL’s headlines. Is Farve playing or isn’t he? Do the Packers want him or not? etc etc.

More important than the image of the league? Ummm… not sure how to answer that. This is much bigger than Brian Westbrook’s contract. What a terrible analogy. Do you see people complaining every 20 minutes when a new Westbrook v Eagles story pops up on this site? Or an interview on some crappy cable news station with Tom Heckert?
It needs to be wrapped up because it is making EVERYONE look bad. Even though nobody is truly in the wrong here. The Packers need to move on, Favre just wants to play (why is it that everyone is up in arms against Favre for just wanting to freakin’ play?! - I don’t even really like him to begin with, but I don’t get all the Favre hating from this mess.) And in the end, the NFL is hurt because the names of a couple of its most celebrated players and franchises are being dragged though the mud on an hourly basis in every available media.
That is why it is Goodell’s business.

My thoughts exactly. If he wants to play GM go find a team who’ll have him, otherwise leave it alone…

Goodell is ’sticking his nose in this’ because Favre is bigger than GB. Even if TT is comfortable with having favre under contract to keep him subdued by the cheddar heads, the NFL and Goodell are not. GB uses his services for 16 years, and now they want to force Favre to sit out. Thompson has made a mess out of this, but I’m sure he is looking out for the best interests of GB…..HOWL!!!!!!

Since when are personnel decisions something that the commissioner has a say in? Did he say anything to TB about the Jake Plummer situation?
I really hope this report isn’t accurate. If it is, Goodell really needs to chill.

As a Packer fan and a Favre fan (who thinks he should have just stayed retired) I find it amusing that the Packers are being told to move on this. Favre is officially on the retired list and until he does something the Packers can do nothing beyond what they are currently doing- asking around. Maybe Mr. Goodell should get on the phone and tell Favre it is finally time to crap or get off the pot.

GB is trying to peddle Favre, according to sources, the packers have contacted over half of the other NFL teams. That means that they are looking at NFC teams as well.
I’ve been saying all along that GB would be wise to dump Favre before training camp opens. Obviously Goodell agrees, but the thought has to be force fed to Thompson. Hopefully TT keeps dragging his feet and favre shows up for camp. Then, TT will finally get what he deserves.

Goodell needs to shut his yap, it’s a team issue. There were no laws broken. If Goodell needs to talk to anyone it’s Favre. His flip-flopping is causing more problems for a TEAM! It’s not Favreball.

In related news, Roger Goodell has also advised the Broncos to get John Elway’s horse teeth fixed before he appears on television again.

The Packers didn’t create this mess, Brett Favre did. The Packers need to do what’s best for the Packers, not what’s best for Favre or the NFL.

@packerswin,,,
It’s bad for the league to have an example of such an accomplished QB in a situation where he is not welcome to play for his own team and not welcome to play elsewhere either by his own team.
Bad for player relations. Bad for public relations. If he’s still good enough, he should not be unwelcomed in the league…

Apparently, Goodell sees the Favre situation as a ‘greater good concept ‘ for the NFL. In his eyes Favre is a huge PR situation/potential problem for the NFL. I agree.

Said it before, will say it again…Goodell is a marketing man. This whole fiasco with Favre isn’t about weather he can still play top level football…it’s about selling tickets and making sure the world markets buy into the NFL…what better way than to keep this soap opera rolling down the track? He’s squeezed all the pub he can from last years top story (see Michael Vick)…this year, it’s the Favre circus.

Boy, Favre has really stuck to his team. Now with Goody forcing a trade the value goes down with the team hanging a sign out that say MOTIVATED SELLER. MUST SELL. ONE STATISTICALLY GREAT QB. NO REASONABLE OFFER REFUSED”.
Way to go Favre.

I have to agree with packerswin. Why not wait until a starter gets hurt in training camp and a team gets desperate? It worked for the Dolphins. Maybe Goodell should mind his own business.
