Packers GM Ted Thompson didn’t include the Eagles in the list of four teams — Tampa Bay, Carolina, Washington, and Atlanta — that were potential trade partners for the services of Brett Favre, but that hasn’t stopped Philadelphia Green Bay from at least sending a feeler, ESPN reports (via The Sporting News).
The Eagles do run an offense similar to Green Bay’s, which relies on a lot of spread formations to stretch the field horizontally, and Andy Reid is a disciple of Mike Holmgren, serving as Favre’s quarterbacks coach at one time.
Still, the Eagles already have a good, albeit injury prone, quarterback — one who has to be wondering exactly what he has to do to be respected. Not to mention the presence of Kevin Kolb, who the team invested a high second round pick on in 2007. It just doesn’t seem likely.
Update: Thanks, astute readers.

Favre plays a more traditional QB position, like Kolb would, unlike McNabb’s more mobile style. Could they want to cut Feely and let Favre mentor Kolb?

They could get Favre, dump McNabb and start the Kolb era next year. Makes sense to me.

If they trade him to the Eagles, I know he’s coming to the Vikings. Childress had connections and he would love to get revenge on the Packers in as many ways as possible.

TM Great job but either the sporting news or you got the headline backwards cause you both have them differing from each other.. with regard to team order.this could be relevent to how the story may be perceived..

It will never happen. It makes no sense. The Eagles brass is got to be chomping at the bit to make the switch to Kolb, which could happen the next time McNabb is injured and having Favre around would only complicate the long-term plans. Never happen.

Hey Big Tom,
Reid was Favre’s QB Coach (and I believe it was just after Mooch Mariucci was). They seem to have a close relationship 10 years later.
Reid is a loyalty guy (if I understand him). He would put a feeler out there as a supportive gesture to Favre. Stand in line, you know, indicate some interest.
The Eagles are obviously set at QB with veteran McNabb and newbie Kevin Kolb as well. The “courtesy” inquiry says more about Coach Reid’s loyalty than his plans for the Eagles, if I know my home town team.
Any more than that would be a shock to Donovan, the whole team and the whole town! But the news might set off a little buzz here in town… LOL

This makes perfect sense. They lost faith in McNabb after the Super Bowl they lost. That’s why they drafted Kolb. So take a shot with Favre this year and next then move on to a very ready Kolb in 2010 or 2011. any draft pick compensation given for Favre can be recouped by trading McNabb to the Bears.

Kolb is still a year away. McNabb is probably the single most overrated player of the last 10 years. He’s a whiner and always hurt.
Favre is perfect. Favre has 1-2 years left at most, exactly the amount of time Kolb needs. I don’t think the Eagles have enough to be a Super Bowl team but with Favre you are guaranteed a playoff spot which I can’t say is the case with McNabb. Dump McNabb, roll with Favre then hand the ball to Kolb in 2010.
I think Carolina is the perfect spot for Favre. He could push them to that 13-3 level and its a perfect spot in relation to his home and all of that. Delhomme is nothing. He’s Trent Dilfer at best. Just a guy. Tampa Bay would be a decent choice. Atlanta makes sense for a ‘coming full circle’ sort of deal but that team won’t win more than 7 games even with Favre.
Phily is kind of a wild card but only if they would dump McNabb w/o hesitation.
I think Minnesota is the pick for drama and shock value but Minny is better off sticking with the young guy…TJack needs reps and sitting for 2 years behind Favre would stunt his development. Of course w/ Favre for 2 years Minnesota would be a good bet to at least get to a Super Bowl. Jackson is no bet to do anything.
Most of the AFC teams don’t make sense…the ones that need help are all either 3 years away from winning or have young developmental QB’s in place and would be better just letting them play.
If you are Mimai do you want to go 2-14 and get another top 3 pick for your run in 2010 or get Favre and go 5-11?

Huh?
I’m an Eagles fan, and to think the Eagles are interested in Favre baffles me. Why on earth would you trade anything for a guy who’s only going to play one more season, and you have a QB who will probably end up on the market in March? They’re supposedly going to go with Kevin Kolb if McNabb is injured again this year, so trading for Favre would only hurt McNabb’s trade value.
Secondly, you have Lito Sheppard and Brian Westbrook wanting more $$$. Why are you going to strain your salary cap more by paying Favre hefty ransom?
Thirdly, how the hell do you think McNabb and Kolb are going to like possibly getting bumped down a spot on the depth chart?
Nothing in this story adds up. If the Eagles do want Favre, the only reason behind it would be to sell more tickets.

its idiotic comments from morons like hawkside blitz that 99% of fans are stupid. favre is better than mcnabb…hahaha. not in this decade he isnt. the last thing we need is an over the hill interception prone QB. i love how the media brainwashes these idiots. if favre throws an INT, hes a gunslinger playing his type of game, if mcnabb throws an INT, its because he didnt see the defender. PLEASE!!! i am so sick of people defending brett favre. he had one good year in the past 5 years and that was last year and even then, he threw an INT that lost them the NFC championship. if mcnabb was playing in the NFC championship and he threw that INT, we would never hear the end of it. favre is not a gunslinger, HE IS AN INTERCEPTION PRONE QB who had a great career but he is definitely on the downslide.

The idea that teh Eagles would trade for Favre is absurd. In Reid’s time the only veteran they banked it all on was T.O., and he was younger and probably better at his position than Favre is (now).
In related news, I always laugh when people start bashing McNabb. There are probably three or four better quarterbacks in the NFL, arguably: Manning, Brady, Palmer, and …. The only thing McNabb truly has going against him is his propensity for injuries. Look at the three quarterbacks I mentioned. They all have marquee receivers, and two of them have at two marquee receivers. McNabb currently has the best group of receivers he’s ever had, and it’s freakin’ Curtis, Brown, Avant, and Jackson. At one point, he was throwing to Thrash, Pinkston, and Freddie Mitchell. Maybe Brady could pull off a miracle with those receivers, but McNabb has done damn well for what he’s had.
He’s a great quarterback. He’s not the best in the NFL, but he’s still great. He’s definitely in the top five for active QBs. To me, you have to be a pretty dumb central office to never put a truly great cast around him. T.O. is agreat and Westbrook is great, but that’s it… bottom line.

naw hs, i’ll take delhomme (healthy) over favre.
i think balto could do fine with favre this year as could buffalo. of course favre might have to study harder to learn more teams in the afc but…
i dont think philly would be seriously interested except to maybe drive the price up for snyder.
the vikings need favre but they wont get him. t-jack is the answer to the question which qb will stub his toe in minnehaha badly next after chauncey pullpecker…

No way Favre comes to Carolina. Richardson and Hurney are working to get both Peppers and Gross resigned, and Favre’s salary would make that impossible. Additionally, Jake is the real deal - because otherwise they would have done something in the draft.
