Although he’s publicly deflecting talk of acquiring Brett Favre, Buccaneers General Manager Bruce Allen is privately trying to determine how quickly Favre would be able to learn coach Jon Gruden’s playbook.
So says Bucs (for now) quarterback Chris Simms, who told the St. Petersburg Times he talked to Allen about Favre.
“He asked me questions about Brett Favre,” Simms said. “He asked if I felt Brett would be able to come back and be good here if he didn’t have a lot of reps in training camp. I said I thought he would but there would have to be some compromise with coach [Jon] Gruden. He’ll just want the play called and to drop back and throw it in there.”
Jeff Garcia is coming off a good year as the Bucs’ starting quarterback, but he’s not coming off as good a year as Favre is. And if there’s one team that doesn’t hesitate to add veteran quarterbacks, it’s the Buccaneers. So it’s certainly not impossible that Favre could become a Buc.
Gruden was wide receivers coach in Green Bay from 1992 to 1994, Favre’s first three seasons with the Packers, so the two would have some idea whether they can work together. Allen wants to know how quickly they could get on the same page.

Wow.
I wish my boss would ask me if I thought how well Person X would do coming in to replace me.
How stupid.

The next question is where does Garcia go if Favre lands in Tampa. He’s a great fit for the Bears, who could use a qb who can move the chains, convert 3rd downs and not make mistakes. With the Bears’ defense and special teams, they would be a very strong playoff contender with Garcia.

So Allen has a private chat with the guy who has publicly called out his head coach and who has zero chance of being in camp. If Allen said what he said to a reporter, that is tampering. If he says it to Simms and Simms runs his yap to a reporter, that is not tampering. Simms is either a moron or Allen’s more-than-willing surrogate. (Allen ensured he was placed on IR last years instead of cut, as he should have been. Why is Simms even relevant? He took over for Griese who had the team at 5-1 before injury, and finished 5-6, coasting into the playoffs. Griese was allowed to leave the next year, and Simms starts out 0-4 before the spleen injury. Is Simms tough? Yes. Can he throw a nice deep pass? Yes. Is he a guy you want in a tough game, down by 7? Nope. There is a reason he lasted until day two out of Texas and his replacement was Top 5). Does simms even recognize how Allen used him to get his message out on Favre without being hit with tampering charges?

Favre doesn’t need a playbook.
He just needs a football, a reciever and a chance … ooops, INT.

I’m not buying that Bruce Allen needed Chris Simms advice on how Brett Favre would be able to pick up Grudens playbook… Why would Allen need to ask anyone other than Gruden who coached him already and runs the offense? I think Simms is just rabble-rousing here.

I agree that Bruce knows exactly what he is doing here. I don’t think he would have said anything to Simms if he didn’t think Simms would turn right around and spill it to the media. Could be another instance of Allen ‘doing a favor’ to another team by showing false interest, in an attempt to get another team to give up more.

Put a Tampa address and stamp on Favre’s forehead and toss him in a mailbox.
Brett, get ready to spend some “quantity” time on your back week four.
GGo Pack; go Aaron Rodgers.

BTW.. Karl Cuba: the Bears? Really? A strong playoff contender with Garcia? If that was true, then the Bucs should be a Super Bowl LOCK with him.
He’s a pretty good QB, but nobody is THAT good.

ModHairKen is right, Simms got played and didn’t even realize it. Another batted pass for the Spleen.
Simms wants out of Tampa (he probably can empathize with the “Plight of Favre”) Send Simms to Green Bay and hopefully they have shorter linemen.

The Bears are used to their QB’s throwing picks as well.

As sexy as it sounds to have Brett Favre on my beloved Bucs…it just doesn’t make sense. Garcia will play even better this year than he did last year, now that he’s had a full season to get down the system. Plus, we already have his eventual replacement–either Luke McCown or Josh Johnson–on the roster plus a reliable backup in Brian Griese.
How would Favre improve the Bucs? Sure, he has a cannon of an arm and is indestructible injury-wise, but that is about it. I would not say he is more accurate than Garcia, and he definitely will not be as interception-free as Garcia was last year.
In fact, with Favre being new to Gruden’s version of the West Coast Offense, I think Favre could realistically throw 23 picks this year if he wore pewter and red.

I think the most interesting aspect was the concern about Favre learning the Tampa playbook if he didn’t get a lot of reps in camp. That may mean that the Favre situation isn’t resolved until the end of training camp. The Packers might want to see if Rodgers can perform and stay healthy during camp before they trade Favre. If they can hang onto Favre until the end of camp, it might drive up the demand for Favre, but also allow them to turn to Favre if Rodgers doesn’t measure up. It also would delay Favre developing chemistry if he goes to a new team, which would lessen the chances of Favre making the Packers look bad by playing great at the start of the season.

This is a real concern. Favre as great an arm and his drive, love of the game, toughness, durability etc. Intelligence isnt his strong point.
He isnt the all-time INT king because he didnt throw it hard enough…

Garcia is made of glass. With Brett Favre on the Bucs, they’re practically a shoe-in for the playoffs. Sure he’ll throw his INTs, but he’ll hook up with WRs too, and the Bucs O-line ain’t as bad as everyone likes to think. I’d love to see Favre in pewter!

is favre really an upgrade over garcia? they both had good years last year, but only one of them is familiar with grudens offense. either way, this and all the other favre rumors are irrelevant unless favre sends in the letter asking to be activated.

Simms knows exactly what he’s doing. Remember, he’s wanted his release for a while, so he’s baiting Chuckie into doing just that. Wouldn’t be surprised if Simms, not Garcia, ended up with the Bears.

Props to the above posts. Simms is most likely being played as ‘the leak’.
NR4 note: Simms most likely full of toxic pollution due to being spleen less.

Another savvy PR move by Chris Simms. He has zero credibility. What a doofus. I’m just sure the GM would solicit the sage opinion of a 4th string quarterback.
Begone, Chrystal! And don’t let the door hit you in the rear.
