Several astute readers have pointed out that the Saints’ attempt to trade a second-round pick in 2009 to the Giants for tight end Jeremy Shockey could be hampered by the trade through which the Saints acquired linebacker Jonathan Vilma from the Jets.
Under the trade between the Jets and the Saints, New Orleans will be required to cough up a second-round pick if Vilma participates in 85 percent of the defensive snaps this season, and if the Saints sign Vilma to a contract extension.
So how could the Saints send a potential second-rounder to the Jets and an actual second-rounder to the Giants.
Per Tom Rock of Newsday, the Giants would get the Saints’ first-round pick if the Jets get the second-rounder. If the Giants get the first-round pick, the Saints’ fifth-rounder falls out of the Shockey deal.

It’s T-Rock you fool! What’s wrong with a 35 year old referring to himself in the third person with a ridiculous nickname given to him in the eighth grade?

The Jets shouldn’t get their hopes up. They won’t be getting a second for Vilma. There is no way that Vilma stays healthy enough for 85% of the snaps.

All the Saints have to do to prevent that is to hold off on extending Vilma. That could be easily accomplished. Vilma will want to stay put and they could agree on a deal in principle and just hold off on the ink until after the time period that would require that the Saints give up their 2nd round pick. Pretty simple.

My money is on Vilma taking 84 percent or less of the defensive snaps. The Saints would be foolish to let it become a first rounder. Unless they are on a clear path to the Super Bowl, Vilma will sit a couple of quarters in games that get out of hand early. IF the Saints actually lock up a playoff spot early or are mathematically eliminated, I’m betting Vilma doesn’t even suit up. Saints have a lot room to play here to make sure they don’t give up a first.

Even if they do have to give up their first rounder in the crapshoot opps I mean draft, who cares? No one really wants the high price of a high round pick anymore, or the high headaches most of those players bring to the team.

Guys..Don’t get too excited. The deal for Vilma was for a conditional 4th round pick. The highest the pick can go is a 3rd. Mickey Loomis was on a local radio show tonight to clarify this argument..

If this is true, and I can’t find anything anywhere which is different than what I said earlier, Loomis looks like a dumbass. Yesterday I searched for the trade details and all I found was a 4 that could become a 3. And if it does, the Saints get the Jets 4.
