While making a long early-morning drive and listening to Sirius NFL Radio’s replay of Monday’s Late Hits with Jack Arute and Gil Brandt, we heard Brandt make an intriguing observation regarding Cowboys safety Roy Williams.
Asked by Arute whether recent changes in the enforcement of the illegal contact rule has hurt Williams’ ability to defend against the pass, Brandt offered a concise ”no.” Brandt, previously a long-time personnel guru with Dallas, said that Williams often is in position to make plays but simply doesn’t make them sufficiently consistently.
Then came the kicker. Brandt, citing an unnamed NFL source, said that Williams could be a cap casualty of the Cowboys if he doesn’t have a strong training camp.
We think the more likely possibility would be a trade, given that the problem potentially arises from Williams’ perception that he isn’t a good fit for the Wade Phillips defense. Besides, someone else would surely want a guy who has made it to five straight Pro Bowls.
Then again, maybe all of this chatter about Williams is aimed at getting him as motivated as possible for a “Super Bowl or you’re all fired” season in Dallas.

You would think that he would have learned in the Pop Warner leagues that proper technique is better than a horse collar. That sounds like the type of coaching that an over-zealous father would teach. Now they’ve taken away his only talent.
Good riddance.

I heard that “Big Tex’s Superstore for Horse Saddles, Bridles, and Collars” is ironing out a possible deal for Williams.

I agree, I think he will not play in a regualar season game this year for the Cowboys. They are going to move Hamlin into his natural position, which is Roy’s current spot, and then move Henry back to safety and have him split with Watkins until he is 100% confident. Then have Jenkins and Newman start or Pacman, and go from there.

Cap casualty? The Cowboys will have about $6 million of cap space after they use up their rookie cap. This is after a very active off-season that saw them extend the contracts of Marion Barber, Terence Newman, Ken Hamlin, TO, and Flozell Adams.
Roy Williams isn’t going anywhere unless he has a bad ‘08.

With all the offseason talk of Williams not fitting into the scheme its gonna be hard for Dallas to get equal value for a player that has a gone to Hawaii as many times as he has (regardless of how many were deserved).
It’ll be interesting to see if any real offers develop for Williams and how Dallas negotiates the deals with virtually no leverage.

Does anyone think that Roy Williams would have played in all of those Pro Bowls if he didn’t have a star on his helmet? 3 years ago Adrian Wilson finished fourth in the Defensive Player of the Year
voting and didn’t get elected to go to Hawaii. The whole process is a joke.

How about a straight up trade with the Detroit Lions for WR Roy Williams? It would simple be called the Roy Williams trade.

He’s probably the most over-rated player in the league; easily the most over-rated safety. He’s Atari Bigby at an Ed Reed price, and makes his Pro Bowls simply because of hard hits that impress the drooling Dallas Cowboys fanbase. He’d do himself and whatever team he plays for well by putting on about 20 lbs and learning how to play outside linebacker.

They should move him to weak-side linebacker or cut him. He’s too much of a liability in pass coverage. Go EAGLES!!!

a “Super Bowl or you’re all fired” season in Dallas
Seems like they should maybe just aim for winning a playoff game before they make plans to win 3 or 4 in a row.

I, for one, hope that he can redefine himself this year. He’s got some flaws in his game, but he’s a real good human being, and a credit to the Cowboys and the NFL on that level.
That said, it’s all about winning, and if he gets dinged for the horse caller/ improper defensive technique again, or costs us big in coverage, I am sure he’ll be gone. If he goes, it will be a situation worse than the current Taylor/Shockey deals, with the ‘Boys getting mid to late raound value for him. Best bet would be to try package him for an established receiver if it comes to that.

As for possible suitors….
The Raiders already made their annual Safety splash by signing G.Wilson to a ridiculous contract.
The Redskins would’ve been a natural fit for an overrated veteran.
The Colts already have excellent safeties, but the hyper-Christian bond with Dungy would’ve been a strong attraction.
I just don’t see too many teams willing to trade away picks for his salary. The guy does make Ed Reed money.
If Roy were cut, then a lot of teams would jump at the opportunity but Dallas really doesn’t have much leverage here.

The days of safeties that can’t cover are basically over. There are really only a handful of teams that can use, or would want a guy like that.
It’s also a total joke that he’s a 4 time pro-bowler.
