At a time when football players are looking to become actors, there’s an actor who possibly could be a football player.
We don’t know whether Christian Bale, who plays Batman on screen, can run fast or throw a ball or tackle large, sweaty men. But he was arrested on Tuesday, so he at least has something in common with a segment of the players in the league.
Bale, 34, was busted for allegedly assaulting his mother and his sister.
And we fully recognize that this post deviates into the realm of the off-topic, but we’ve been looking for an excuse to share our thoughts on the greatest . . . movie . . . ever made, The Dark Knight.
Frankly, we didn’t like it.
It was way too long and, at times, it was way too slow. The much-touted intelligence of the film was way too overt.
And maybe the chorus of critics, one of whom compared the thing to Michaelangelo’s David, gave us expectations that never could have been satisfied.
Regardless, it felt like a laregly wasted three hours. Bale’s lead character had an incredibly annoying old lady smoker’s voice when he was playing Bruce Wayne’s alter ego. And, frankly, we doubt that there would be so much fawning over Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker if Ledger were still alive.
Ledger was very, very good. But not nearly as downright-freakin’-piss-in-your-pants-creepy as Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men.
At one point, when Bale and Michael Caine, who played Alfred the Butler, were exchanging lines, we were reminded of a certain film featuring both men that was ten times better than The Dark Knight. (A free one-year subscription to PFT goes to the first reader to name it. And the second one. And, well, all of them. And the people who get it wrong. And those who don’t make a guess at all.)
What say you, PFT Planet? Are we right on The Dark Knight, or are we just getting too damn old to know what’s good and what isn’t?

I think it was a good, entertaining movie, but not nearly worth the hype it’s received thus far. Everyone is calling it “amazing” and “the best movie ever” and I just don’t see it. I also TOTALLY agree about Bale’s voice when he is Batman. So annoying.
One thing I will say though is I think the praise for Ledger is deserved. He was awesome, hilarious and twisted, and the best part of the movie in my opinion.

The Prestige. And if that’s correct, I concur. Fantastic. I also concur just about everything else - your assessment of Ledger as the Joker, the overhype creating nowhere to go but down, and the absurdly overt “intelligence” of the movie. It was as though they were trying to make something deep and meaningful without removing it from the surface. Deep for the dumb, for lack of a better explanation.

Too damn old and too far off the topic. Stick to football. If I want Batman reviews I’ll go somewhere else. Why so eager to deliver a “we sort of liked it, we sort of didn’t” review of the movie anyway?

Your just getting too old to know what a good movie is. The Dark Knight was fantastic. Iron Man was great, but this was better than any comic book movie I have seen. I think you’ve spent too much time worrying about Favre or if 2nd round picks who will be out of the league prior to 2010 get paid right in the uncapped year.

So you’re saying whoever guesses the name of that movie would be doing it more for The Prestige of being first than for any material gain?

Wow. I can not believe you thought that the Prestige was a better movie than the Dark Knight. You expectations must have been WAY too high. The movie was long, no doubt about that, but I did think that moved along at a good clip. I found myself counting the moments until the Joker appeared on screen again. Ledger totally reinvented himself as the Joker. I had to remind myself that it was Ledger even though that fact was beaten into are heads like a drum. For once, in a big budget movie with big movie star, the actor disappeared into his role and the character was move important and clearly more defined, as its own entity, than the character playing the role.
