When Bill Parcells was hired by the Miami Dolphins as V.P. of football operations, it was widely presumed that he would be running the show.
But, on paper, great pains were taken to ensure that the Tuna wasn’t in charge, primarily so that Jeff Ireland could be hired away from the Cowboys with the promise of “final say.” Absent final say, the Cowboys could have (and likely would have) blocked the move.
Evidence quickly emerged that the paperwork didn’t mesh with the practicalities. Ireland indirectly admitted not long after getting the job that Parcells has final say on at least some things.
In the wake of the Jason Taylor trade, there’s another piece of evidence indicating that Parcells really is the guy in charge. (As if anyone really doubted it.)
Specifically, Parcells and not Ireland apparently worked out the deal, according to comments from Redskins executive V.P. Vinny Cerrato.
“I talked to Bill Parcells after practice today,” Cerrato said, “and we were able to work something out.”
But if the Tuna’s job is to be an overseer of the team, delegating duties to the men he has hired to run the team (and to the one who supposedly has “final say”), what in the heck is Parcells doing negotiating the trade?
It’s all further proof of the worst-kept secret in the NFL. Despite the titles, Parcells is running the show.

Remember when your Dad took the training wheels off of your bike and ran behind you while holding the seat? Ireland and Sparano are the kids and Parcells is the Dad. The kids are riding the bike and the dad is making sure they won’t crash and go 1 and 15.

So what, honestly?
He’s rebuilding a franchise, boo hoo if another GM speaks to him and works out a trade, for all you know, Ireland MIGHT have final say on whether or not they traded Taylor, you don’t know, you weren’t a fly on the wall.

Final say = getting to say “Yes sir, Mr. Parcells” at the end of the day.

Taylor became expendable . A ProBowler getting paid big money on a team that is not going anywhere for at least this year. The Dolphins are retooling the roster, no sense in paying an aging ProBowler $8M. Who cares if it was Parcells or the mascot making the trade? Same thing.

Unless the Cowboys complain I think it’s a non-issue. I understand that rules are rules, but if Jerry really wanted Tuna to stick around he would’ve made his case then.

Honestly, this might have been something personal for Parcels. It might have been Bills final FU to Taylor knowing the Skins look good on paper, but will never make it to the playoffs.
Now we can turn around and use those picks we just got from Washington to get Favre and all the sudden JT is doing his best Homer Simpson impression.

So lets get this straight… he’s VP of Football Operations, but you don’t think he has FINAL SAY over Football Operations? I’m failing to see the problem here. If all he did was sit there and not make decisions… why would they need him?

Please Mike get off Parcells already. Jeff Ireland will
call all the shots when Parcells leaves in 3 or 4 years.
It’s a forgone conclusion that is not news. This is legal
technical stuff that depends on what are the NFL rules
and what is indicated in Parcells’ contract. Who cares at
this point that Parcells is working and dealing as a GM
He won’t get busted for it and Ireland will benefit in
that he will run the Miami Dolphins in three years.

Like the tampering rules, the NFLs only true concern here is that it not be made public.
Absent a public complaint from the Cowboys, there isn’t a story here.

After listening to ESPN this morning, it’s even more of a joke. The interview with Vinny Cerrato mentioned Parcell’s name 4 or 5 times, but never once mentioned Ireland or Sparano

Of course, the Tuna run the Fins. A big fish runs the fish, who would have thunk it?
IMO, the Fins just lost a lot of talent in JT.

I didn’t want to do too much damage to this football anathema that is the Miami Dolphins organization. And, now they have Bill Parcells which is the first step towards righting the sinking ship. Let me get this straight, albeit being football VP supreme he is their head coach! He’s still on the field coaching(shhh that’s supposed to be hush-hush) and what seems to be a role change there isn’t one except for the payoff and location that come with the title of VP.) Titles have become what are overused now in the NFL, Assistant Head Coach is the best one. The teams that use this theme to retain good coaches the most are: The Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, and the Seattle Seahawks. Basically, the teams overpay these assistant coaches and make them head coaches in waiting to scare the crap out of the current one so that they’ll perform better but, as we saw in Washington that title holds very little water as their Assistant Head Coach was fired after the head coach left. So, what’s the point?

Good, I am GLAD that Parcells is running the ship. It’s about time we have somebody at the helm who actually knows a thing or two about football!
