The New York Jets have upped the ante with tight end Chris Baker in their protracted contract squabble.
A month after Baker didn’t practice during a mandatory minicamp because of an allegedly bad back, the Jets have placed him on the Physically Unable to Perform List due to the supposed injury.
Asked if the move, which as a practical matter bars Baker from training camp practices until he is removed from the list, was related to the dispute, agent Jonathan Feinsod said, “No comment, no comment, no comment.”
Last year, the Jets were dealing with another disgruntled veteran, Pete Kendall. The dispute between player and team got ugly during camp, with Kendall alleging that the Jets were trying to get under his skin by, for example, assigning him to the rookie dorm. Kendall eventually was traded to the Redskins.
This time around, keeping Baker out of practice could keep Baker from disrupting the team. But, if he truly isn’t injured or if any past injury has healed, Baker should be able to challenge the PUP designation through a grievance.
Baker is the third veteran player, including Kendall and receiver Laveranues Coles, to claim that the team broke promises to adjust their contracts. Baker was explicit in June regarding his criticism.
“Guys are definitely concerned about it,” Baker said . “I can guarantee you after this is all said and done there will be someone out here going through the same thing next year and the following year because of the way things are handled here.
“My advice to guys would be if you’re going to do anything, as far as with this organization, get it in writing, because things may be said with a wink and then the next thing you know they say something has been misconstrued. This is three times and, like I said, this is going to continue to happen.”
As a commenter pointed out in response to one of our Jeremy Shockey stories from earlier in the day, a trade of Baker from the Jets to the Giant could make a lot of sense.

nyjunc;
Coles had to fight with the Jets in public to get the deal. Coles said that he was lied to and the Jets were not following through with their promise.
The Kendall situation was that he claims that he took a paycut with the understanding that if he performed in 2006 that he would get the $1 million back that he gave up and the Jets renegged.
Sorry, that is three Jets players who claim the Jets lied to them about a new deal. That is too much of a trend to not believe it is true. The Jets mishandle how they promise things to their players. There is no way around it.
If the Jets don’t start winning this year, it could hurt Mangini’s and Tannenbaum’s standings with the players.

dbatesman,
1. The Jets initially reneged with Coles and after he brought his case to the press and it turned into a media relations headache, they gave in. If the media didn’t react so negatively and it wasn’t around the time the Jets just got really agressive in the free agent market, who knows if the Jets would have given into Coles so easily. One thing seems pretty clear is that INITIALLY they renegged on the deal.
2. I believe the players just because Baker is the third player who came out with the same story that if that player performed, that that player would get a new deal. Baker isn’t an isolated case.
I don’t know if Baker deserves a new deal for what he did last year, but there is definitely a pattern of the Jets offering something that they aren’t exactly inclined to follow through with unless they are backed into a corner. Coles could do that since he is their best receiver with no other options to replace him (it was a very weak draft and free agency for WR). Baker couldn’t especially since the Jets could find his replacement in the draft.

Stanjam: When did I amke any excuses for the Jets? I’m sure the Jets have done things like the Pats did but they weren’t dumb enough to get caught after being warned by the League.
You’re damn right I’m envious of 3 Super Bowl Trophies, I hope I see won in my lifetime. That’s probably how you felt until this decade.
Who, besides the Pats, said something to the league about the Jets? The Jets has PERMISSION to tape where they were taping from. They didn’t do anything illegal. It was the Pats just trying to get back at the Jets for turning them in. You act like 5 teams have said something and the League has done nothing. You guys have been the darlings of the League all decade so please stop complaining.

Robo:
1. First of all, you’re taking Coles at his word (that the Jets promised him more money, then backed off), which isn’t necessarily true–he’s bitched about his contract once every two years, be it in NY, Washington, or now back in NY. Second, keep in mind that the Jets never caved to Coles. He wanted a new contract. Tannenbaum’s counteroffer was to guarantee the final two years of his deal. After a couple weeks of media sniping, it was over–Coles got the last two years of his contract guaranteed. So the Jets never gave in; they gave Coles exactly what they’d offered at the beginning of the negotiation.
And what else were they supposed to do? Cave in the second he walked into Tannenbaum’s office and demanded more money? That’s no kind of way to run a team. I don’t think the media had anything to do with it; they weighed their options and decided it was worth it to keep Coles happy, since he’s the undisputed leader of the offense. Meanwhile, Coles was out bitching to the media. Considering the media blackout imposed by Mangini, I seriously doubt he’s taking his cues from newspaper reports.
2. It’s a fair point, but again: he said/he said. It’s entirely possible that the Jets have made, and then broken, promises to multiple players. It’s also entirely possible that Pete Kendall invented that story to gain media sympathy, and that Coles and Baker saw that it worked and decided to use the same BS strategy. I think it’s wrong to simply assume that the players are telling the truth here. That’s not to say the Jets FO is completely honest, as I’m sure they’re not. But you can’t assume one way or the other.
There’s no way to know the truth, obviously, but I tend to lean toward the players lying–mainly because, as Erik Boland, Rich Cimini, and other Jets beat writers have noted, the Jets played their asses off for Mangini last season, right down to the last game against KC, even though the season was over by week 9. If the Jets’ players feel betrayed by their coaches, they have a funny way of showing it. As long as they play hard, I could care less about their contracts.
Agree about Baker having no leverage, especially compared to Coles. I’d be perfectly happy seeing him traded.

This kind of reminds me of that episode of Seinfeld where George tells his dead fiance’s parents that he has a house in the Hamptons, and they invite themselves. Both sides know there is no house, but neither wants to admit it to the other, so they drive to the Hamptons, they talk about how the house is furnished, the horse “prickly pete”. It isn’t until they are walking towards a house that does not exist that the truth comes out…

This is too funny. My advise for Jests fans, watch college football & figure out who you are going to take with the first pick in the draft. Then make your wish list as to who will replace Ratgini.Being a Jests fan the red headed stepchild in the NY market & to cheer for a team that has experienced nothing but futility for the past 40 years,I feel your pain.Lousy team, lousy coach ,lousy QB,lousy defense, lousy GM ,lousy owner thats what it is like to be a fan of the Jests.JETS stands for, just end the season!

The Jets did NOT have permission to tape from the mezzanine as stated by Ratgini. It was refuted in the Herald and Boston Globe when the print and TV media asked BB directly, “did Mangini have authorization to tape during the 2006 play off match-up?” BB “no one asked for permission to tape, orally or in writing!” Later, Goodell reiterated that “taping isn’t allowed during the game.”
I don’t care what most of what other fans say, but can you try to be accurate? Had this issue been handled properly, there’s no Matt Walsh involved in this story! The walkthrough was a complete fabrication! Yet, we go on and on with this nonsense!
Followers of Schlereth and Carter, Peter King and that idiot Easterbrook drove this story into the ground. Dug it up and regurgitated it some more….It’s amazing to me how little facts are written on this site by uninformed fans! Hey, I understand you’re tired of the Pats putting the whooping on your team, doesn’t justify stretching the truth! Even Specter eventually let it go!
