Jay Glazer of Fox Sports is reporting that the Giants have agreed to trade tight end Jeremy Shockey to the Saints for second- and fifth-round draft picks in 2009.
Shockey must pass a physical and the league office must approve the trade before it can become official, but the deal appears to be close to done.
Glazer reports that the Giants accepted the same offer that the Saints have been making for months. It is not clear what prompted the Giants to finally accept the offer.
Shockey will become the Saints’ No. 1 tight end, and will undoubtedly be used as a wide receiver in some packages in Sean Payton’s offense. Kevin Boss will be the Giants’ No. 1 tight end, continuing in the role he played for the Giants during their postseason run.

How about upcoming training camp and not wanting to see or deal with this guy.
Either way, I’m pretty surprised. I didn’t think either side would budge.

And this is the news that everyone will hear. In actuality, the Giants were in trade talks with Miami and New Orleans. The Giants wanted Taylor to renegotiate his contract. New Orleans would have received Shockey, and the Dolphins would have received the picks that the Saints were offering. The only hangup was Taylor’s contract. Obviously, the Skins had no hangups with the contract and consequently pulled the rug out from under the Giants. With Taylor gone, the Shockey deal was made between the two.

What prompted them to do it now???? The fact that they could not turn Shockey into Jason Taylor anymore, why else?

Wow! Now I wonder if they held out on the draft-day trade to accomplish a couple things: (a) shorten the time period Shockey had to pick up the new offense, (b) make sure draft picks were in next years draft so they didn’t have to listen to fans wondering why they got nothing in return for “this year”.
It’s just strange that it’s the same offer that they’ve been making and it took the Gnats this long to accept.

As a Saints Fan…..YES!!
Sure he is coming off an injury, but I would bet he will have a MONSTER year with an intelligent QB throwing him the ball. Eric Johnson could not have been worse last year, and Shockey has a superdome size chip on his shoulder.
If we cant find a decent #2 wr, screw it lets just get an athletic TE. LOVE love love this move…Saints to the SuperBowl!

Looks like running your big mouth and your two fisted swilling in a luxury suite at the SB, instead of being on the sidelines with your team where you belonged, was all that was needed for a ticket out of town. And a 2nd and a 5th in next years draft isn’t bad value either.

Wow. How cocky the Giants have become. They go on hot streak in the playoffs and win the SB and then dump their #1 TE? Wow, again. Yeah, yeah, I know Shockey didn’t help, but you can’t tell me Eli started to play because big bad boy Jeremy wasn’t in the huddle. If that’s the case, then Eli is a pussy and a one year wonder. Who’s it gonna be next? Gonna surround him with pansies like himself.
Giants go 9-7, if they’re lucky this year.

I still think the Jets should have traded Vilma for Shockey in March.

Glad to see that this finally got done. Peyton will use Shockey the way he wants to be used and the last of the Coughlin bashers are gone from the locker room. Plus the second round pick in Jerry Reese’s hands will likely outshine anything Shockey is likely to do over the next few seasons anyway.

I’m not a huge Shockey fan, but I think that’s a good deal for the Saints, and I wouldn’t have minded if the Ravens had gotten him for a 2nd and a 5th in the 2009 draft.

Here’s my question…..
As part of the Jonathan Vilma trade, the Saints agreed to send a conditional pick to the Jets if 1) Vilma met certain playing hurdles and 2) If they signed him after the season. If both of those things happened, the 2009 draft pick could have been as high as a 2nd rounder.
Now that the Saints have traded away this second rounder what will happen if the conditional pick going to the Jets turns into that second rounder????
Would the Saints be penalized for trading a pick that might not belong to them when all is said and done?
What would happen at the end of the day?

Don’t the Jets own the Saints 2nd round pick in 2009 if Vilma performs great? It is my understanding that when the Jets traded Vilma it was a conditional pick for 2009.

I hope that this works out for all parties involved. Shockey gets a fresh start in a pass happy offense and the Giants avoid his potential negative impact on the chemistry they developed last season (plus the picks of course).
