We’ve gone 14 straight stories without mentioning Brett Favre, but due to an unconfirmed tip we received today we’ve got to break the string.
We reiterate that this is an unconfirmed tip. Then again, unconfirmed tips have been working out pretty well for us of late, so we’re more inclined than usual to press our luck.
Per the tipster, Favre is abandoning his attempt to return to the NFL. We’re told the Packers presented him with a list of three teams to which they’d attempt to trade him, and that Favre refused each one.
If this is accurate, Favre will be the first high-profile pro athlete who damaged his legacy by not playing for a new team late in his career. Last week’s shameful attempt to win the P.R. battle and to pressure the Packers into letting Brett have his way blew up in Favre’s face, with his surname suddenly less likely to conjure images of championships than to induce nausea.
But even if it’s accurate, look for this thing to continue to bubble up from time to time. We had to endure six years of stories regarding whether he’ll retire; we very well could be destined to have six years of stories regarding whether he’ll unretire.
And if Aaron Rodgers tears, rips, or pops a critical part of his anatomy, it’ll be interesting to see whether the Packers would give him a call — and whether, if they do, Favre will pick up the phone. The events of the last 10 days might have made a zero-year reunion impossible.
Meanwhile, Favre’s apparent decision not to try to return doesn’t change in any way the tampering charge the Packers filed last week against the Vikings. So even though the story of Brett’s potential return could be dead, he did just enough to give us something that we can continue to cover for the next several months.
Whether we want to or not.

the only loser in this scenerio would be the minnesota vikings. but that’s ok, they’re used to being losers.

I’m extremely curious to know who the three possible teams could be. We can definitely say the rest of the NFC North is out. Rumors have linked to the possibility of Carolina, but that’s assuming Carolina would be willing to pay. If this is true at all, I really do wonder who would be willing to bite. Maybe back to Atlanta?

thank God the man seams to be letting this go…getting tired of hearing it…since it seems like 3+ years of hearing about him retire…has he heard the story about the boy who cried wolf?…I know its Favre…and if I were a Packers fan…I’d want him to play forever too…but the idea that the guy wanted to come back to play for someone else?…that’s a horrible idea…especially if it were to be for any of our big rivals…I’m sure the class act that the Packers fan are…they will cheer him during his number retirement…but I wonder if there will be a few boos, for this latest fiasco

He may have damaged his legacy, but if he chooses not to play now, I think he minimizes the damage that he has caused.

Nobody in Green Bay or the entire Green Bay organization
really cared about Brett Favre…hince the super
turn out that all you “great Packer fans” gave him when your
team decided to royally screw a guy wanting to play for
a winner. How about this…..”Hey Brett…go be our
back up to an unproven QB….or Hey Brett..How about
playing for a crap team” Yep…thats top notch respect
for a guy who bled Green and Gold for the last 17 years.

Actually the rumor is one of the three teams was the Vikings but Favre wanted to play professional football or stay retired.
The Packers will grant him his wish.

Good. It just doesn’t seem right that Favre would be in any other uniform than a Packers (except for my Atlanta Falcons rookie card, heh). I still shudder when I think of watching Montana put that dang Arrowheaded helmet on. Somehow, it seems less iconic for a franchises posterboy to flip-flop in the twilight of his career. As a Dolphins fan, I am eternally grateful that Dan the Man didn’t follow greener pastures late in his career. I was praying he wouldn’t become a Viking, as the rumor of the day had it.
Namath a Ram? Unitas a Charger? Eli Manning a Charger…….ok, that actually happened, but you get my point.
This is the great mistake of the NBA. Its become too fluid.
Then again, Montanas jump-ship did give us that classic Elway/Montana Monday Nighter in ‘94

My guess would be the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baltimore Ravens.
Outsiders would be Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and the Washington Redskins.

Farve returns to Mississippi, never to be heard from again.
