Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher appears ready to report to training camp happily after reaching an agreement on a one-year contract extension.
Michael Smith of ESPN reports that Urlacher and the Bears have agreed to a contract extension that will give Urlacher a $6 million signing bonus and a $1 million bump in salary each of the next four years. One more year has been added to Urlacher’s deal, and the final year of Urlacher’s new contract will be the 2012 season.
His base salary in 2012 will be $7.5 million. Throw in a $500,000 workout bonus in 2012, and that’s $18 million in new money for Urlacher, although at age 30 there’s no guarantee that Urlacher will still be playing through the 2012 season.
Urlacher had four years and $25.5 million remaining on his existing contract, and he skipped voluntary off-season workouts in part because he was unhappy with his deal. He is expected to sign the new contract tomorrow when the Bears open training camp.

When are teams going to take a stand and force players to realize that they don’t have to sign long term deals with huge signing bonuses that they covet which is essentially money paid up front for years of service yet to be earned? They seem to want it both ways….big up front money in exchange for long deals. Then when a lesser player signs for more $$$, they want a new contract when they still have FOUR years left. Sign a bunch of 3 year deals if you want the opportunity to get a raise more frequently. Oh wait, that would never happen because they want to have their cake and eat it too. Ridiculous!! Just one more reason why the Bears are a joke along with believing that Orton or Wrecks Grossman are the answer at QB. I almost forgot about Cedrick Benson.

Forum cop- That comment doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a Packer fan. Everyone knows that Lovie Smith makes the games against the Packers their Super Bowl every year. Last I heard, it didn’t seem to make a difference given that they were sitting home last year and the Packers were in the playoffs with a 13-3 record.

This is basically the exact same deal the Bears reportedly offered him several months ago. Just like with Lance Briggs, the Bears made a fair offer from the start and after a bunch of whining, the players finally realized it and accepted. Maybe the Bears front office isn’t as stupid as you people like to say they are.
