The offseason is officially over.
The Washington Redskins gathered on Saturday afternoon for a team meeting, and on Sunday morning they’ll be the first NFL team to have a real, live training camp practice in 2008.
Coach Jim Zorn said on Saturday that morning practices will be “heavy,” with players typically in full pads. The afternoon sessions will be less intense, and on some days veterans will practice only once per day.
“You will see some days will be a morning practice and a special teams practice in the afternoon,” Zorn said. “There won’t be anything else but special teams.”
Still, the experience will be more intense than the camps under Joe Gibbs, with more contact.
“I think our lines — they’ll have physical contact every day,” Zorn said. ”Our running backs and our linebackers [will have contact]. Even our defensive backs and receivers have to learn how to block or shed blockers downfield.
“It’s the live contact, where you’re taking a guy to the ground and leaving your feet — we have to watch that [to avoid injuries].”
Because of extensive offseason practices, which entail plenty of contact in T-shirts and shorts, training camp for most if not all teams generally isn’t the same grueling, physical hardship that it has been in past years.
Still, it can turn serious. Seven years ago, Vikings tackle Korey Stringer died due to practice in intense summer heat.

Thank god its football season again. Im so sick of baseball. The only thing that I’m looking forward to other than football is watching the Mens US Olympic Basketball team beat down everyone.

Didn’t a rookie DT on the Patriots die a couple years ago at practice???

Being a life long Seahawk fan, I’m definitely in the Skin’s corner this year. Really think we screwed the pooch in offering the job to Mora instead of Zorn. Well, ideally it would’ve went to Zorn with Mora being our defensive coordinator.
Oh well, either way, the Skin’s made a great choice, I think.

FOOOTBAAALL!!! Sweet drug of choice! I swear they need to run the college football and NFL seasons consecutively instead of concurrently, so we can have a full 8 months of football instead of four.
The ’skins should be good, again. It seems like every year they get no love preseason, and every year they sneak into the playoffs or are in it ’til week 17. Campbells a year wiser, Portis is healthy, and they bolstered the receiving corps. No doubt Sean Taylors (RIP) death has really set the D back a bit, but I am sure they’ll punk my Cowboys in Washington again.

Mad respect man. It’s good to hear a Cowboy fan talking a healthy topic about the Redskins. As a skins fan I got to say I look forward to the 2 hopefully 3 fights we have this season. It certainly will be an exciting year, and as we’ve bolstered our WR corps, you’ve bolstered your CB corps.
I’m sure we can agree on a few things for sure, such as the NFC east being one real tough division. Here’s to a good season!

I’ll be there tomorrow. I can’t wait to see my Skins and am glad they are the first team to have a training camp practice. I have modest expectations for them this year. Just want to see Campbell develop and I will be happy.

Yeah. Two winning seasons out of the last eight and four total since Joe Gibbs’ first tenure. Nice anti-woof!

True, but who says you have to have a winning record to sneak into the NFC playoffs. You play in the NFC East, you can just write 2-3 losses in every year, no matter how stacked your team is. Aside from the ’skins game at NE, the pats had their hands full with every team in our division. Oh, how I hope it’s the Cowboys turn to punk the pats next Feb…
