Though he’s three years on the wrong side of 30, linebacker James Farrior wants to stay with the Steelers after his current contract expires after the coming season.
“I love the team,” Farrior recently told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. ”I love the organization. I feel like this is a good home for me, and I’d love to stay. But we all know how the business goes. We’ve had a lot of great players come through the system that had to leave. That’s part of the game. That’s what you’ve got to realize.”
Farrior is willing to stay even if it means taking a reduced role with the team. But he wants to get an extension done before the season begins. He says he probably won’t return in 2009 if a deal isn’t in place soon.
He quietly has had a very solid career in Pittsburgh after signing as a free agent following five years with the Jets. Farrior has started all but four games during a six-year stint with the Steelers.

Must mean they are talking to him already in order to get Timmons in there…
Tomlin acts quickly, gotta give him that.

It would be nice if they could keep him around, even in a diminished role. He’s versatile, smart and a good linebacker. He is on the wrong side of 3o tho.

Unless his production completely disappears, Farrior needs to stay where he is. Woodley and Timmons need the veteran leadership. And if Farrior is okay with a reduced role, then why wouldn’t you keep a guy like that on the team? It’d be great to see him move into a coaching role when his playing days are over.

He is saying all the right things. I hope a extension happens. Give him a two year extension, I know he will sign it………..

I’d like to see him still on the team. He’s been one of the best players on this defense for the past few years. In a reduced MLB role, he could share time with Larry Foote, with Timmons being the primary.
