Before convicted steroids dealer David Jacobs killed himself and his on and off girlfriend early last month, he had named Matt Lehr of the Saints as one of his customers.

In an interview with the Dallas Morning News, Lehr wouldn’t discuss those allegations. He did discuss something else that might help explain why Jacobs publicly named Lehr without naming any other names. Speaking about Amanda Earhart-Savell, Lehr said “She was in love with me, and I loved her.”

At the time of the murder-suicide, Jacobs was described as jealous and possessive of Earhart-Savell. The article portrays Lehr as the focal point of much of that jealousy. The News reports that in late March Jacobs found a letter in his mailbox. “Bro, Matt Lehr is [expletive] your ex-squeeze,” it read. “Do the math.” Although Lehr had been implicated when Jacobs was first arrested, the dealer only publicly named him in April of this year.

Lehr’s lawyer, Paul Coggins, is using the revelations as a way to further discredit any of Jacobs’s allegations against Lehr, who has never failed a drug test since serving a four-game suspension in 2006. “He was jealous of Matt on all sorts of levels,” said Mr. Coggins. “The chief one was his fear that Amanda was more interested in Matt. A shaky story to begin with has collapsed.”
