I read this thing like the second it popped up on fox sports, at my office. It's pretty funny. His, "I predicted when..." sarcastic anecdotes of pomp remind me a lot of some McSweeneys writers. The whole thing is very dry, but after I read it, the comments started flowing and they really made me second guess humanity.

About a third of the people thought that Whitlock was really playing the race card and were getting pretty millitant about it. retaaads.

I agree with Shamrock, you can not utter the words Babe and Favre in the same sentence, not even close! Ruth changed the game, he had more HR's that 6 different teams in his first season in NY. The equivalent of that MIGHT be Brady's season last year because he had more passing TD's than 3 or 4 different teams combined. Brady could go down as the greatest QB to walk the earth just as Ruth is the greatest baseball player ever, by a mile, when you consider he was a 20 game winner (a few times I believe) as a starting pitcher before he decided to assault every hitting record known to man.

Favre is/was not bigger than the game, Ruth was, no question about it. Sure he's a first ballot HOF but he's no better than Aikman, Young or anyone else from the 80's, 90's or today. Of course you admire his iron man streak, but that doesn't elevate him above any of the other HOF QB's. I also can't recall any other HOF QB's giving a conference title game away by throwing such a horrid pass like he did last year.

"Get over it. The great ones are always a pain in the ass".
Truer words were never spoken.

Mike Florio and Jason Whitlock say what most of us would
want to say if we ever had the chance to speak freely.

This article should be a must read for every Packer fan. Hell,
for every sports fan. Great article. Thanks for sharing.

I find that people are generally too stupid to understand Whitlock. I am glad to see him getting some love here.

Yes he might say negative things about your team, yes he likes to wrtie about race. There things do not make him stupid.

He is one of the best sports writers in the country.

Whitlock wrote:

"This thing with Favre is bigger than football. He's a modern-day Babe Ruth..."

Bull. Favre won one ring. One. How many titles did Ruth win?

When you stack Favre up against Hall of Fame QB's, he might make the top ten. Seriously. Go list all the great QB's, even ones who didn't win (Marino, Fouts) and compare. Not just stats, but impact on the game. I'd take a one time ring winning Namath over Favre. Staubach, Montana, Bradshaw, Unitas, Young, .... who else? Favre is very good, and a deserving HoF jacket wearing QB, but putting him with Babe Ruth? Not a chance.

Hail Whitlock! Right or wrong, I can't get enough of his opinions. Since he's black, he almost seems like he has a free pass to say whatever the hell he wants, what other people wish they could get away with. Somebody has to say it!

Florio and Whitlock might be my favorite two football personalities in the business. Wish somebody important could figure out a way to team the two up...

I've heard that Whitlock has been off on a few stories in his life.

But this letter takes the entire situation that millions of people have weighed in on (and as baxter would say) cuts right to the core.

So many angles, so many pundits, not alot of clarity. Brett Farve is an enigma, but Aaron Rodgers is a fortune cookie.

Give me the Packers wideouts, give me the running game, give me the all-important defense led by A.J. Hawk, Charles Woodson, and Al Harris and let me quarterback the game.

The point is that at the end of the day you don't take a team of this caliber and waste it away with thoughts of rebuilding, yet that is what they did. Job security is a must, but mismanaging the greatest quarterback this side of Montana and Young and bookended by Brady and Manning, will make the entire Packers organization a bust.

What happens during the scrum is fodder for the young. You can take the dog out of the fight but you can't take the fight out of the dog.

Brett Farve was forced out by politics. And maybe he's a bit of a hick. But he sticks to his guns, that is what the fans will remember when he quits.

I usually don't like Whitlock, but he is right on and funny in this one.

Brett Favre is a problem a lot of teams would like to have. So what he messed up your plans. Change them. If you had not given him 39 million reasons to continue playing.

Twice? Is that some kind of joke? It wasn't worth one read, it was like everything Whitlock writes, self-serving and ignorant. Thompson is the reason the Packers were 13-3 last year, not Favre. Rodger's future is lots better than Favre's future.

The devotion to Favre strikes me as the same as the devotion to Cowher. Lots of years, lots of jawing, and only one ring. Trent Dilfer and Brian Billick wonder why they don't get the same adoration.

I've been saying the same thing since the beginning of this fiasco...but I'm dead serious! The Packers were one play away from the Super Bowl last year and the entire team is back.

Favre's got an ego; Thompson's got an ego; heck even Rodgers has an ego...two of them have to put their egos on a shelf for a while and Favre is the only one of the three that can put wins on the board this year.

I don't care about Favre's "legacy"or Thompson's power trip or Rodgers' fragile self image; I just want to see the Packers back in the Super Bowl.

I don’t care about Favre’s “legacy”or Thompson’s power trip or Rodgers’ fragile self image; I just want to see the Packers back in the Super Bowl.

Amazing... Whitlock uses logic and reason to argue in favor of Favre's reinstatement and all the PFT planet Favre-haters are dead silent.

Did we realize how absurd it is to want Favre to retire simply because we're mad at him for faux-retiring in March?

I must have been confused. I thought the goal for all teams was to win Super Bowls. Doesn't Favre give the Packers the best chance of doing so?

Whitlock might be a slob, but in this case he's right.

Cmon thxkbye this is insightful analysis. You may disagree regularly with Mr. Whitlock but he is right on with this one. The onus will be on Favre to perform at a high level (wherever he ends up) after he's pulled this retirement ruse again. I say all this despite my prediction that Brett Favre will be playing football, just not in Green Bay. This story gets better every day, but eventually it will just get old... like aged Wisconsin cheddar.

Well said thxkbye.

Here's my "fake" letter:

Dear Jason Whitlock,

You are an extremely crappy "writer" that constantly puts out thoughtless dribble. Do yourself a favor and drop your column so you have more time to do what you are obviously best at: EATING!! I find it hilarious how this is yet another Whitlock column that you cannot add comments to. I wonder why? It couldn't be because FOX knows that 90% of people will be talking badly about the garbage they just read, could it?

Signed,

He's missing the whole point. Everyone, including TT, knows that Favre is the best QB for the team this year. THIS IS ABOUT THE FUTURE. If the team goes back to Favre, they can blow a kiss goodbye to Rodgers, who will be out of town ASAFP. He already didn't appreciate sitting for three years, and if he has the starting job promised and then yanked away, he will pitch a fit, and rightfully so. Would the team rather have Favre for one year or Rodgers for ten? That's the issue. As bad as it would be for the team to struggle with Rodgers this year while Favre succeeds elsewhere, it would be ten times worse IMO to going through QB after QB for the next decade while Rodgers has a stellar career somewhere else.

What an astounding column.

And thxkbye, so what if he's gotten fired before? Lots of people have, and his columns are clearly of high quality. He did deserve to get fired from ESPN for saying things he did (even if it was the truth) about other colleagues. But he continues to be hugely insightful, and his recent work does not disappoint.

I've avoided reading anything by Whitlock because there has always been something better to do (say, clean up the vomit from last week's poker game).

However, at your suggestion, I read this particular article.

You call Whitlock's writing "hilarious"? My local White Pages is funnier that this crap.

And what's with the racial angle? Does Whitlock resort to this often?

Back to the vomit. Man, that stuff really solidifies after a few days.

Jason Whitlock is hilarious, I attended the Jeff George foundations "Kickoff for the cure" event (benefit for breast cancer research) last weekend in Indianapolis. J. Whit was the host for the event and he was outrageous! That save Obama's rope story was not only true but hilarious.

He's 1000% right. If T Thompson screws up the Favre deal, it will be his ass, not Brett's. Thompson needs to put his ego aside for his own sake if nothing else, kiss up to Brett. Plead temporary insanity...or something of that nature. First he needs to push Greta and John Madden out of the way.
