Four years after running back Ricky Williams shocked the football-following world by retiring after only five NFL seasons, could Ricky be ready to re-emerge as the best player on the team?
Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald raises the question, and based on Ricky’s offseason practice performances it’s not as ridiculous as it sounds.
“I have to say, watching him practice, I was very impressed with his quickness, his explosion, his effort,” former Redskins and Texans G.M. Charley Casserly told Salguero.
“The guy jumped out at you, watching him out there.”
First-year head coach Tony Sparano seems to agree.
”I see the potential in him. I sure do,” Sparano said. “When I watch him, I see him being explosive in and out of the line of scrimmage. He’s explosive with what he does in the second level and his ball skills when he catches the ball. All those things that were there when I [coached] against him and he ran all over the place against us are still there.”
Casserly also compared Williams to John Riggins, who had a late-career resurgence with the Redskins in the early 1980s.
So maybe Ricky will displace Ronnie Brown as the go-to option at tailback this year.
Or maybe this is all part of a ruse by Fins V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells to create a trade market for Williams.

What, no witty jabs at him for his past drug use. C’mon, if this was about Rany Moss there would be a least 2. RW was 10x worse than Moss and he get a break?

This is what Parcells does…He brings the best out of players.
Mark my words: Dolphins will finish ahead of the Jets this year.

I’d even go as far as saying he will lead the league in rushing this year - depending on how many carries they give Ronnie Brown - but for sure he will displace Brown as the starter…
I would like to say - Ricky to the Bronco’s… he would be a 2000 yard back for them…

Hope you’re right Dirty. Ricky will be on the team. Period. Ronnie is in good health but not ready for prime time and Ricky is. The tandem worked extraordinarily well in the past and it will again. Sinc they have only marginal idiots at QB and talentless quasi-receivers, the running game will be featured. Lots of runs, lots of dump passes to RBs (hell, my grandmother could make those).
Wont’ be a pretty season. And NO. We do not want Favre. Parcells won’t even consider it - he’s old and despite his great year in 07 he wasn’t so hot in the preceding two years. Why do that? Except that their QB situation is pretty dire. Watch for McClown to start with Henne taking over about halfway. Beck, sadly, was ruined by the incompetence of that abject moron, Cam Cameron.
Man, I sound like I am personal buddies with Bill. Disclaimer: This is all pure conjecture. Like about 90% of football related “news” in the off-season.

“could Ricky be ready to re-emerge as the best player on the team?”
That’s quite a limb you’re out on. Anyone on this board could emerge as the best player on the Dolphins if given the chance.
“Mark my words: Dolphins will finish ahead of the Jets this year.”
I don’t see why not. 3 wins ought to do it. I think people are giving Parcells too much credit. What has he really done for this team so far? They still have a head coach that hasn’t been a head coach since he was at Podunk U. And they still have mostly the same crappy players they had last year. 4-12.

Anything Armando Salguero says is pure BS and serves only to stir up controversy. Examples include the supposed Jason Taylor/Parcells “feud” and being the first to mention that Josh McCLOWN could very well be the starter over John Beck. He spews opinions like these every couple of weeks just to start trouble and has no real facts to back them up. He always ends up getting proven wrong and I wish the Miami Herald would sack him already. He’s one, if not the worst, writers the paper has and has never gained my respect or many others’ out there. If you want some inside info based on FACTS, talk to Barry Jackson.

two major issue with team last year. one, effort, they simply did not play for the coaching staff or themselves and folded in the second half of games. two, conditioning, as evidence by all the injuries they had. they were a mash unit by the end of it. this all had to do with the incompetence at head coach.
even with that said, they were still competitive in the majority of games, losing 6 by 3 or fewer points. the change in management alone will account for a handful of wins, never mind the talent upgrades.
they still have major concerns at QB, but the O-line performed well last year, surprisingly, and they only got better in the off-season. Brown and Williams are going to have big yardage from scrimmage. this will help the defense, too.
I think they can go 6-10, and would not be shocked if they steal a game or two and get close to .500

Interesting. Although unlikely simply because Rickey is a high risk (solely based off of injuries, they both can retire and come back on a whim).

RW is a guy who has tons of talent, but who doesn’t WANT to play football. He simply HAS to play. If I remember correctly, when he was out, a judge ordered a very hefty child support order against him. He said something about RW has to pay, and can’t avoid it simply because he isn’t playing. The judge said something about what he CAN make, and simply avoiding the job is not an excuse not to pay.
So the guy suddenly turns around and WANTS to play again? I think it has a lot more to do with the fact that he has no choice in the matter. He doesn’t WANT to play, at least he doesn’t want to put in all the work it requires. Any team that gets saddled with him is going to be hurting from his attitude and lack of desire. Parcells is going to try and build this guy up as a potential game breaking player, so that he can get the best value in him when he ships him out of Miami.

Gee, maybe RW can finally run normally after getting all the hemp residue out of his system. Or maybe it’s all the Red Bull kicking in.

Anybody know where Ricky’s weight is? He’s his best around 235, but I think that he’s been around 215 for the past couple of years if I recall correctly.
They say that it helps his quickness being lighter, but I think that the detrimental effect it has on his power-running makes it a net loss.
