looks to me like bf is being political. he has been telling everyone else how to do ther job, and then he went greta on the situation.

if he thinks he is the gm, can he really be in trouble for tampering?

the packers own the rights to 2 more years of favre - if he wants to play. since other teams think he is still worth tampering for, i wouldnt cut him just yet either. i dont think yall will find any other gm in the league who would just release him period. he would have to go pacman/henry.

the pack doesnt mind punishing the vikes, who are pretty clueless in some respects, but the real goal is to get bf to be a team player and come to camp OR STICK TO WHAT HE SAID HE WOULD DO IN MARCH.

bf didnt decide to come back till after the pack had moved on. how convenient. he seems to constantly forget - they own the rights to his next 2 seasons and dont have to release him.

and the vikes are just in the same doo doo they were in last year. pretty good overall team except for one little problem at qb.

"Mossey Cade, the only difference is that if the packers are using the pick, they wont f–k it up "

The Packers screw up more first round picks than hit on them.

Antwan Edwards - who?
Jamal Reynolds - who?
Bubba Franks - crappy Jets TE now
Javon Walker - yeesh. long on talent, short on brains
Nick Barnett - Good pick
Ahmad Carroll - bust
Aaron Rodgers - TBD
AJ Hawk - Good player, but he may never live up to his #5 overall status
Justin Harrell - we'll see if he's any good, he should start this year with Williams gone and Jolly likely headed to prison.

Mossey/Trikee,

Packers won't F-up the pick??

Vikings’s last seven years of first-round picks:
2007 Adrian Peterson RB Oklahoma
2006 Chad Greenway LB Iowa
2005 Troy Williamson WR South Carolina
Erasmus James DE Wisconsin
2004 Kenechi Udeze DE USC
2003 Kevin Williams DT Oklahoma State
2002 Bryant McKinnie OT Miami
2001 Michael Bennett RB Wisconsin

Packer’s last seven yeear's of first-round picks:
2007 Justin Harrell DT Tennesse
2006 AJ Hawk LB Ohio State
2005 Aaron Rodgers WR Cal
2004 Ahmad Carroll CB Arkansas
2003 Nick Barnett LB Oregon St
2002 Javon Walker WR FSU
2001 Jamal Reynolds DE FSU

Using the Bakay Tale-of-the-Tape method, lets break it down scientifically:
2007 - Vikings (no comparison)
2006 - Push (Hawk and Greenway both solid)
2005 - Packers, but questionable. If Brett returns and Rodgers leaves in a year, then push as both bust.
2004 - Vikings (don't make me compare)
2003 - Vikings (Barnet is solid, Williams is a multi-Pro Bowler)
2002 - Vikings (McKinnie is an anchor, Walker on his third team and currently auditioning for the Mean Machine)
2001 - Vikings (at least they got 1 Pro Bowl year out of Bennett)

The Vikings can draft talent. They just find a way to choke it away.

Oh second Question, What if Favre wanted to come back in another role other than a player. Could Darrell have asked him to come in and be a Quarterbacks Coach. I know that would never happen but is it a possibility to come back as a coach even if you have 2 years remaining on contract to play? How long would Brett have to wait before he could coach?

I have a question Mr. Florio, Is there any recourse that the Packers could face for filing a false charge. Because if there was no punitive action against false accusations, one would think that any team at this point could claim tampering whether there was evidence or not and just hope the league stumbles upon something. If there is no evidence then the accusing team would say… “Oops, My bad” and if they do find something your opponent would lose draft picks or other penalties. I guess my point is that this is B.S. everyone knows its B.S. The Packers are doing this to keep Favre away and possibly handicap the only team in the division that stands a chance of dethroning them. This looks to me that they are afraid. More afraid of having Favre show up on Monday the 9th of September in the other jersey. That also tells me they are possibly planning on letting Favre go. And this is a preemptive ploy to keep the Vikings paws off of him.

Are you guys actually serious? How can anyone take Favre's side on this? After the crap Favre has done over the last 3 years in the offseason there should be no way he can be defended.

All Thompson has said is that BF needs to unretire to get back on the roster so they can jointly figure out what to do with no preconceptions as to BF's role. What's unreasonable and political about that? The only argument from BF is that TT would then fine him for not being in camp. A pathetic response by any criteria.

Come on Law Dogs,

You can't "suddenly" develop "chronic" verbal diarrhea. Chronic means its been going on for a long time. The appropriate diagnosis is "Acute Onset" verbal diarrhea. The treatment, is of course, a higher fiber diet and a general habit of thinking before speaking.

Mossey Cade says:
July 17th, 2008 at 1:15 pm

"HA! The joke’s on the Packers, since the Vikings losing a first-rounder is no loss at all:

Vikings’s last five first-round picks:

2004 Kenechi Udeze DE USC
2005 Troy Williamson WR South Carolina
Erasmus James DE Wisconsin
2006 Chad Greenway LB Iowa
2007 Adrian Peterson RB Oklahoma

The first one has a life-threatening disease, the second one is blind, the third one piled up five whole sacks in three-plus years, the fourth one missed his entire first year with injury. Okay, the fifth one is Purple Jesus. But still!"

Kenechi will more than likely come back for the '09 season. Greenway had the same stats this past year as Green Bay's loved A.J. Hawk. AD is Purpul Jeezus. 3 of 5 ain't bad.

Why do I get this funny feeling that Ted Thompson is being advised by Karl Rove?

Every step Thompson has taken has been purely political, where perception and spin is more important than truth, and winning the day's new cycle is more important than doing the right thing.

His talking points have gone from: "We wanted Brett back, but he changed his mind again" to "We changed our offense to fit Aaron Rogers" to "We want to protect Brett Favre's legacy" to "He can come back, but only as Aaron Roger's back-up" to "He can come back and compete for the starting job" to "We would agree to trade Brett, but no one has shown any interest in him" to "This is all Minnesota's fault because they were illegally contacting him to come out of retirement to play for them."

Thompson, any thought that Favre was just emotionally spent when you pressured into retiring in March, and after some time off he realized what he really wanted was to come back as the Packers starter and complete what wasn't finished last year? Or do you think it was all some diabolical plan to screw the franchise that he always be remembered for just to play for a rival team?

Or is Ted Thompson just channelling Mark Peterson (the Chicago area police officer who allegedly has killed three of his wives)? Thompson is acting like a possessive ex-boyfriend with his "I don't want you, but don't want anyone else to have you either" attitude.

I would say that this is like two guys fighting over the affections of the prom queen but it's closer to two guys fighting over the affections of the lunch lady with the big hairy mole on her lip.

Good luck with your "Least Supportive of the Starting QB" nominations at the Irrelevant Franchise Awards, guys.

What I don't understand is why the Packers management wasn't willing to sit down privately and talk to Favre, without bringing the media into the whole thing. After all, this guy is still the face of the Green Bay Packers, and he took their team to a top-4 finish last year. On the way he finished 4th or 5th in the league in almost all the passing stats - completion %, yards, QB rating. Even if the Packers didn't want him back, this could have, and should have, been handled quietly, and I blame Packers management for that. After all, Favre didn't give a single interview until after Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy spent all of last weekend talking to the press. That's when everything took an ugly turn. I think I might be pretty upset, too, if my old boss said, "You have two choices: Stay retired, or come back and be humiliated." And the reality is, it's not the Packers decision whether Favre stays retired; they have no right to force that on him - but they also are not required to take him back. I think an agreement could have been reached in private before things turned dark, but no one even tried. Not that Favre has handled everything well on his end, but he deserved a little more respectful response than he got. Thompson is a cutthroat jerk (never mind that he's too stupid to give Ryan Grant a contract), and this is not the first or last time he will behave this way toward a respected veteran player. I can only hope his days in Green Bay are numbered.

If Favre and Bevell were not friends, there would be circumstantial evidence, at best. Since they are friends, nothing will come out of this. Even if there were conversations about Favre playing for the Vikes , who is going to admit it? Bevell would lose his job and any future job. Favre would tarnish his reputation by destroying a friends career; and Cook, (if anything was going on and if he was involved in that alleged activity) would certainly never get another client, and could face disbarment.

HA! The joke's on the Packers, since the Vikings losing a first-rounder is no loss at all:

Vikings's last five first-round picks:

2004 Kenechi Udeze DE USC
2005 Troy Williamson WR South Carolina
     Erasmus James DE Wisconsin
2006 Chad Greenway LB Iowa
2007 Adrian Peterson RB Oklahoma

The first one has a life-threatening disease, the second one is blind, the third one piled up five whole sacks in three-plus years, the fourth one missed his entire first year with injury. Okay, the fifth one is Purple Jesus. But still!

I think the contract will be restructured for a trade to whatever interested party there may be. I don't believe Green Bay will pay Favre $12 million to be a backup.

I think your definitive statement as to why the 49ers were convicted of tampering by Goodall is based solely on a blog entry from Tim Kawakami. If so, you're not being smart. I don't think Tim's story has been confirmed by any other published source. Tim has a history of disclosing 49er stories that nobody else confirms that in many cases turn out to be dead wrong. Tim also has a very open agenda of being hostile to the 49ers and wanting the owners, head coach and general manager replaced. I'm being nice, what I really mean is that Kawakami pushes half truths & lies to further his campaign and it does you no favors to repeat them as fact.

CoryDangerous,
No way the Commissioner takes away a #1 pick. SF only lost a #3 and that was for trying to work a deal with Brigg's agent. Old friends talking does not rise to this level. Personally, I suspect that this goes away. Goodell talks sense into the Packers and the charge gets dropped. At worst, a monetary fine is asssessed. I can't see a draft pick being lost over hearsay.

Let me see if i understand what happened.

Brett retired. GB had a press conference where he cried and acted like he still wanted to play but did not feel like dealing with the OTAs and the constant speculation.

GB drafts 2 QBs and makes plans to play Rodgers.

Brett starts doing the interviews and opens the door to a possible comeback.

The Pack does not really want him back. They also don't want to let him play for anyone else.

Brett does not accept the terms and the pissing match begins.

TT tries to paint Brett as a backup or a flip flopper.

Brett tries to paint TT as an idiot.

Brett is made to look like a fool for "not sticking to his decision" and spewing "verbal diareah" about his beloved GM, who he never really got along with.

Brett has a contract with about 30 million left on it.
If he shows up before week 6, the pack has to pay him or cut him.

The media eats anything Brett drops from either end up with a spoon, particarally the "verbal diarea" and the rest of us are basically disgusted by it at this point.

His contract and the fact that he is retired make any kind of trade unlikley to impossible, so basically nothing that is said or done until Brett makes his move for unretirement, will change the fact that when he does the Pack has one of two options. Pay him a whole lot money and hope his heart is still in it, or cut him and face the PR hit they are attempting to brace for now by making Brett look like a liar instead of like almost every really good vet player near the end of the line. How upset was GB whe Reggie unretired and played for the Panthers? There was no S storm of controversy because he was not turned into some sort of demigod by the media.

I agree that this is a PR play first and foremost for the Packers. There is no need to dissuade the Vikings from signing Favre because the Packers have no intent of releasing him.

If the commiss fines the Vikings for tampering, all the better. But, I suspect the intent is to change the focus of conversation.

If the Vikings are smart (big stretch), they turn the PR around on the Packers by making a statement to juxtapose (thanks Tiki) the relational skills of Vikings employees (vis-a-vis, two long time friends talking about anything but coming to play for the purple) as opposed to Packer management who: will not talk to arguably their greatest player ever, plays out confrontation with that player through the media, and tells the public and the player different stories. The Vikings should point out this to be the attempted smear that it is.

Has anyone stopped and thought about the whole Madden video game curse??? eeesh! Maybe there's something to it. I betcha that if #04 does play this season that gets injured. And if that happens (if a player who was friggin' retired at the time it was announced that he would be on the game's cover) the comes out of retirement and then gets injured, would any player be stooopid enough to be on next year's cover?

if favre cared about Green Bay, he would testify against the Vikings in order for them to lose draft picks. But obviously its easy to see that he doesnt care about them at all.

I totally didn't understand Farve retiring when he did. He stuck it out when the team wasn't very good & then he quits when he gets one game away from the SuperBowl? It made no sense. The team wanted to know where he was as far as wanting to come back as recently as May. He stuck by his decision then.Should the team hold a spot for him as the starter when he kept telling them he was staying retired? This has been going on for 3 years now with him going as far as holding a press conference to state that he hasn't made up his mind yet.I find it difficult to understand how anyone can be on Favre's side on this after what he has done over the last several years.

Mike you kind of alluded to it in your report here, but I think that this is the first step in the Packers plan to release Favre. You are probably right that this will scare the Vikings away from signing Favre as a free agent, because doing so would almost be admitting they were guilty of tampering.

Then they would just have to worry about Favre signing in Chicago, which as a Packer fine would suck, but this year I would much rather see him in Chicago than Minnesota. Minnesota has a far better team than Chicago, which I hate to admit, because I live on the WI side of the MN/WI border, but it is true. Favre in Minnesota would be far worse than Favre in Chicago, and this tampering charge will make it very hard for Minnesota to sign him, whether they are guilty or not.

New conspiracy theory. The whole will he or won't he is a sham devised back in March by TT, MM, and Favre. Favre has no intention of returning, but with GB being threatened by a solid (and building) Minnesota team, they devised one lasts plan for Brett to beat the Vikes.

Brett makes the first move and contacts his old QB coach. The Super Bowl hungry Vikes have no way to resist and try to get Favre to come play for them. Favre will remain retired, however Minesota will lose out on a first rounder next year, costing them a valuable player.

the charges were filed last week... which means Brett's interview came afterwards.

It's not just a jab at the always great on newspaper Vikings, its a warning shot at all the other teams in the NFL to stay away. Retired or not, BF is under contract, for some reason 12 million isn't enough to come play for a GM he hates, as if every other player in the league loves their GM.

Yeah, the first thing I thought of when I heard this is this was an effort by Thompson to keep the fans in check by blaming the whole situation on a hated rival. And if they can send a little distraction westward while the Vikings prepare for what looks to be a solid season, so much the better.

'Cause I certainly don't believe the Vikings had anything to do with Favre's decision to come back and his lack of desire to play for the Vikings. Former QB coach or not, I can't see that Favre has any particular hankering to play for the Vikings. While I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Favre & Bevell were chatting, and that Bevell floated the question of whether Favre would consider coming to the Vikings, I sincerely doubt Bevell has that much influence over Favre and his actions.

Agree w/ KSteiner.

Shrewd (and most likely sober) move by the Sconnies trying to divert focus to a heated and hated rival who is trying to sneak in and scoop up Brett Fav-ra.

Only thing that makes me sleep easier is that Capt. Fred Smoot isn't around to be chartering a boat for a tour of Minnesota lakes to help in the recruiting.

Florio, you of all people should be smart enough to know that this is all part of the PR campaign by the Packers front office to make Brett Farve out to be the bad guy, but also to scare away any potential team (especially the Vikings) that would be interested in signing him when they eventually cut him. (Which they are going to do.)

Ted Thompson is one of the most dishonorable GM's in the business, with a history of screwing over his veteran players without even batting an eyelash. It's no wonder that Favre doesn't get along with him. This entire debacle with Favre was his doing, and by buying into his claim of tampering charges (which apparently you have) you are doing exactly what he wants you to do. If anyone should have a story on PFT leading people to believe they are the bad guy, it should be him.

Here's a conspiracy theory idea. The Packers don't know either way
whether or not the Vikings are tampering and don't actually care.

However, what better way to divert the attention of the entire mess
the franchise is in than to claim tampering and put the focus there.

BF gets less attention; TT and Coach get less; "rookie" quarterback
gets less; and the negative vibe focused on one of their arch enemies - the Vikings!!

Can we please just push pause until Green Bay and BF figure this out?
Let's get into camp and get organized behind TJack and see what this
season can bring!! BF is never going to be a Viking so let's the
Packers figure out their own stupidity!!
