We’ve gotten several e-mails, and seen several comments, regarding the question of whether a player who has retired can be the subject of tampering allegations.
The easy answer is yes. Absolutely, yes.
If a player retires with years left on his contract and his team placed him on the reserve/retired list, the team still holds his rights. And, consequently, no other team may talk to the player about unretiring and playing for that team.
The difference between Brett Favre’s situation and the case of Junior Seau, who retired after playing for the Dolphins and then signed with the Patriots, is that Seau was also a free agent at the time. Favre is under contract with the Packers for two more years, and those two years will be in place indefinitely, unless and until Favre plays for the team for two more seasons — or unless and until the Packers release him.
Any other rule would invite mischief. For example, Bengals receiver Chad Johnson, who tried his damnedest to get out of Cincinnati, could have “retired” in the offseason, and then signed with the Redskins or any other team as a free agent in August.
Meanwhile, I’ve reviewed Jay Glazer’s report regarding the tampering allegations made by the Packers against the Vikings and Josh Alper’s PFT blurb regarding the same, and an obvious question arose.
How in the hell did the Packers know that Darrell Bevell and Favre were engaged in “inappropriate dialogue”?
Unless the Packers are simply relying upon the rumor mill, we see two possible explanations. Either Bevell ran his mouth about the conversations to someone outside the organization who blabbed, or someone inside the Vikings’ organization blew the whistle. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see what if any hard evidence the Packers have to support their contention.

they filed it pretty quick, actually. either they have some good info or it was a “preemptive strike”.
packers may not be able to prove tampering beyond a reasonable doubt. but it looks like a reasonable thing to accuse the vikings of doing.

Good question. No matter what, this really ought to force the issue and get it over with.

Brett Favre. The gift that keeps on giving. He may go down, but he’s taking half of the NFC North with him.

Who says they have hard evidence? All they may be trying to do is scare the Vikings off.

I hope Bevell didn’t call Farve or Bus Cook to have a friendly, non football related conversation. That is obviously enough evidence to support tampering. Just ask the Niners…

It does come across as a preemptive move by a paranoid Packer front office based on rumor.
I no doubt Brett Favre talks with many of his former teammates and coaches. But if the Packers claim his talks with Darrell Bevell are a recruiting call, it does work to scare the Vikings away because Favre signing with Minnesota would appear to prove this charge true.
The ironic part in all this is I don’t think the Vikings are really as interested in Favre as Ted Thompson’s paranoid illusions. It’s really just a media speculation because the Vikings are the best team without an established veteran starter at QB.
But Favre really doesn’t fit in with what Brad Childress is doing. Childress wants a conservative QB to manage the game, make a few plays as needed, and not hurt the team by gambling or making ill-advised passes. Plus Childress in a control freak. The last thing he wants is a media circus and locker room disruption. Don’t forget Childress was the O coordinator when the T.O. fiasco happened in Philly. I don’t see him going out of his way to bring the same atmosphere to the Vikings.

Well, I guess the righteous fans out there will soon be calling for an asterisk next to the Vikings this season for cheating on the tampering rule.
Didn’t the NFL dock the Dolphins a first round pick for cheating via tampering in their “perfect season” as well?
With Goodell’s “get tough” policy I’d expect he’ll be even harsher on such cheaters now.

You said that Bevell may have blabbed or someone in or outside of the Vikings camp, but what about Brettney himself? Can you imagine a heated argument between Thompson and Farve that ended up with Farve saying something like, “You may not want me, but coach Bevell and the Vikes say they do.”?
Virtually impossible to prove, but I would not put it past him that this may be closer to the truth.
Talk about the Madden curse screwing things up… I just want to see it in Cheeseland and leave the Vikings alone. Please!

“Not to mention he never filed his retirement papers, did he?”
Yes, he did file his retirement papers, but it’s irrelevant anyway, the Packers still own his rights either way.
Anyway, do the Packers have to prove anything, or does the league just do their own investigation? I’m assuming that investigation would at least mean interviewing the Packers’ management to find out what they know.
If the Packers don’t really have to provide much evidence, then this could just be chaff.

It is curious that this happens just after Favre’s appearance on Fox. It looks like an effort to take the heat off the Packers and make Favre look like the bad guy. No one in this soap opera is looking very good right now. I almost miss the Terrell Owens drama of past seasons.

Will Brett Favre just go away!!! This is planet Earth not planet Madden. We don’t care about old, washed up QBs. Enjoy your fall from grace Brett. I always knew you were selfish and now I’m glad the rest of the world can see it first hand as well. Cry Baby Brett has always thought he is bigger than the whole Green Bay franchise. Way to go Brett!

This is a load of Cr@p. Green Bay is trying to smear Favre’s name into the ground. And also raise suspicion of wrong doing in the event that they do cut him and he signs with the Vikings. That way they can say “look, see Cheaters… Cheaters” And then All the fans in Green Bay will say that Favre was stolen from them by Minnesota. All the blame shifts to us instead of inept management taking the blame.

Wrathchild, you are just another person who posts on here like he knows what he’s talking about when you really don’t. Favre NEVER filed his retirement papers and said so in his interview. Get your facts straight! It’s no wonder how so many rumors start. There are so many people who claim to be NFL experts that blab about things they know nothing about or don’t have their facts straight!

If tampering consists of “inappropriate contact”, then the Vikings should turn around and file tampering charges for “inappropriate contact” against all 31 other teams in the NFL. The NFL is a small world, players and coaches all have close personal friends on other teams who they stay in contact with. Bevell, Sharper, Longwell, Ferguson are all personal friends of Favre’s. Every veteran player on every roster has personal friends on other teams… if they have made one phone call, or attended one golf game with any those individuals, than those teams have as much of a provable tampering case against every other team in the NFL, as the Packers do against the Vikings.
