On Wednesday, the NFL formally announced that Bob Papa, who handles the play-by-play on Giants radio broadcasts, will succeed Bryant Gumbel as the play-by-play announcer for the eight NFL Network regular-season games.
The news was first reported last month by Neil Best of Newsday.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to join NFL Network and call the Thursday night games with the talented Cris Collinsworth,” Papa said. ”Being the new play-by-play voice on prime-time national NFL games after announcing one of the most exciting games in NFL history, Super Bowl XLII, it doesn’t get much better than that.”
Papa also will provide pre-game and post-game reports on Giants games for NFL Network.
Gumbel’s tenure ended after two lackluster seasons on the job. He famously got player names wrong (e.g., Rick Romo and Al Gore), and Gumbel’s delivery was, to put it as kindly as possible, uncompelling. (Contrary to appearances, however, he never burped on the air.)
NFLN initially attempted to hire Al Michaels, who also handles play-by-play of the weekly Sunday night games on NBC. Michaels declined the opportunity.

I hope he signs off on his broadcasts by saying, “I love it when you call me Big Papa…”

I’m so glad Gumble is gone. I remember last year during the Cowboys/Packer game during a play he said “And Barber is easily going to get to the endzone here” upon which time, Al Harris promptly tackled him for a 7-10 yard gain. The guy was an idiot and has some serious non-sports issues as well.

Hey Florio, you left out my favorite Gumble gaffe which was when he said “…and were down to the two minute morning.” Well, I must say good for NFLN for improving the broadcast team, but so ends my dream of Emmitt Smith and Bryant Gumble teaming up to form the worst announcing duo in the history of broadcast sports.

So Gumbel turns over the gig to Papa “on downs”?
As a Giants fan, on the occasions that I listen to the game on the radio (I usually watch it on tv or attend the game) I can objectively say that Bob Papa is a very good, knowledgeable play by play guy. He doesn’t provide annoying shtick like Joe Buck and he’s articulate. He’s also not afraid to question coaching decisions or criticize players, either. Further, he won’t burp on the air and blame it on the microphone. I think you guys (well, those of you that actually get the network) will like him.

Bryant left sportscasting for a news gig years ago. Greg is by far the superior sportscasting brother.
Bryant should not have returned to professional sports coverage. Over the years his enthusiasm waned, he did not remain current and his edge was long gone.
It showed, didn’t it? Maybe it was the best option NFLN could figure out how to offer up until now…
