The decision to let his little brother have the fun job may cost Josh McCown in his quest to be the starting quarterback of the Miami Dolphins.

McCown and his younger brother Luke, member in good standing of the Buccaneer quarterback auxiliary, were chopping firewood at their home in Texas when he was injured.  Big brother held the wood for little brother who swang an ax that missed the wood and sliced the index finger of Josh’s throwing hand.  Josh needed six stitches has 10 days to recover before Miami opens camp.

The injury could have been worse, it seems, but it may hamper McCown enough for him to lose ground to John Beck or Chad Henne in the battle for the Dolphin starting job.  Luke McCown isn’t in line to start in Tampa but his lack of accuracy may hurt him in his own battle to remain a member of Jon Gruden’s overflowing stable of quarterbacks.

UPDATE:  It’s been a long year for the index finger of McCown’s throwing hand.  During the 2007 season while playing for the Raiders, McCown smashed the same finger into a teammate’s helmet.
