A reader tells us that WFAN’s Mike Francesa said earlier this afternoon that the Packers could be trading quarterback Brett Favre to the Carolina Panthers or the Washington Redskins for a conditional first-round draft pick.
The problem in that regard is that the Panthers don’t own a first-rounder in 2009; they traded it to the Eagles. But maybe the Packers would settle for the equivalent of a round-one selection under the points chart that teams use to value draft picks.
We’d previously heard that Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, had been saying privately that Favre wants to play for the Panthers. We hadn’t previously considered the Redskins, but the light bulb finally flickered during a Tuesday afternoon radio visit with Big O & Dukes of WJFK in D.C.
Jim Zorn is the new coach of the Redskins, and he’ll be using a version of the West Coast offense. Favre has been running the West Coast offense for his entire career.
Also, Redskins owner Dan Snyder has a history of targeting big-name players, and of giving up draft picks to get them. Given that franchise quarterbacks rarely if ever are available via trade or otherwise, perhaps Snyder and the ‘Skins won’t be able to resist.

A name that surprisingly wasn’t mentioned–Jason Campbell. All indications have been that the coaching staff is pleased with the way he has been progressing over the last couple years. Do they not see him as a viable option to run this team?

Not likely, the Skins were in the playoffs last year with a 1st round QB who shows promise.

Why would anyone give up a 1st rounder for a guy who is probably going to be released?
—————-
This is a good point; didn’t Florio say something about a week ago, along the lines that the Packers have to act within 3 days on Favre if Favre applies to be taken off of the retiree list? Something like that? Anyway, after the period of time expired, they were supposed to be obligated to release him.

I don’t think you can tell another team what they can or cannot do with their property once you have traded your property; however, there could be conditions placed on the draft pick(s) that Snyder would have to send to Green Bay as compensation.
For instance - it’s a 3rd round pick if Favre spends the entire year on Washington’s roster; or it’s that 3rd round pick and a 2nd round pick if Washington trades Favre; or it’s the 3rd round pick and a first round pick if Washington releases Favre and he signs with an NFC Central team.
Being a Viking fan, I hope the third scenario occurs - but that Favre ends up with the Bears.

I’m sure Jason Campbell would be thrilled, this move would kill the Redskins. They already have a new coach, offense and aging offensive players. I hope it happens, I love watching Dan Snyder destroy this team, he never disappoints.

Instead of going on Fox, Favre should have gone on Oprah, jumped up and down on the sofa, and proclaimed his love for football. That would make it a lock–Favre to the Redskins for a 1st round pick. Plus, Favre could star in the Snyder/Cruise production of “There’s Something Else About Mary.”

Is the 2009 1st round pick burning a hole in Snyder’s pocket??? First he offered it for Chad Johnson, now possibly Favre.
That man has no idea how to build an NFL team.

I like it. Keeps him out of the NFC Norris and could possibly turn the east into a serious war of attrition. Bad news is the Pack will have to win the division because the wild card will come out of the east.

Do you guys just make this stuff up or what? First it was the Panthers who not only don’t have the cap room to sign a washed up Favre but their starter has looked great in the off season thus far. Now it is the Redskins, who also don’t have the cap room and have a young QB that they have been grooming. Why would they want to bring Favre in? At this point in his career he is no better then Campbell!
The only teams I can think of that may want Favre are the Bears, Vikings, and maybe the Jets. Considering two of them play in the Packers division, perhaps your next made up story can be about the J-E-T-S!

I believe it was Chris Carter about 3-4 days ago who made this prediction on ESPN.
It seemed like he based his prediction on where Favre would fit the best.
He pointed to these facts:
1) Yes Jason Cambell is a good starter and he is going into his 5th year but he has had a new offensive coordinator and system each and every year.
2) Zorn will be his 5th in 5 years.
3) Zorn uses the west coast offense as does Favre.
4) Favre signs a two year contract and Cambell learns from 2 hall of famers how to do the west coast shuffle.
5) The Skins have the talent to make a Super Bowl run.
6) Snyder likes the Big Names and has the money for a big signing bonus.

Carolina would love to have Favre…
If Jake has any complications with Tommy John the next choice is Matt Moore and he needs more time to develop
One good hit to jake’s arm and his career could be done…you cant go into the season knowing your QB can be fragile

Favre’s name has come on for years in Washington. Even before Campbell. And fact is last year the Skins only woke up AFTER Campbell got hurt. It was old pro with no experience who took them to Seattle in the playoffs a game they came back and seemed to have won.

It seems some of you idiots completely forgot last season where this over the hill, prima donna, has been threw 28 td’s and 15 int’s. The dude owns every record in the book and was MVP of the nfc last year. Did any of you geeks ever think that maybe the int’s and problems of the early 2000’s were a matter of coaching?? Is it just a coincidence that under good coaches (Holmgren and McCarthy) Favre has been excellent? Have any of you even looked at the stats, or is it just more fun to act vile and stupid behind an anonymous screen name than to actually know what you’re talking about?
