A reader tells us that WFAN’s Mike Francesa said earlier this afternoon that the Packers could be trading quarterback Brett Favre to the Carolina Panthers or the Washington Redskins for a conditional first-round draft pick.
The problem in that regard is that the Panthers don’t own a first-rounder in 2009; they traded it to the Eagles. But maybe the Packers would settle for the equivalent of a round-one selection under the points chart that teams use to value draft picks.
We’d previously heard that Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, had been saying privately that Favre wants to play for the Panthers. We hadn’t previously considered the Redskins, but the light bulb finally flickered during a Tuesday afternoon radio visit with Big O & Dukes of WJFK in D.C.
Jim Zorn is the new coach of the Redskins, and he’ll be using a version of the West Coast offense. Favre has been running the West Coast offense for his entire career.
Also, Redskins owner Dan Snyder has a history of targeting big-name players, and of giving up draft picks to get them. Given that franchise quarterbacks rarely if ever are available via trade or otherwise, perhaps Snyder and the ‘Skins won’t be able to resist.

So is there any rules in place that would keep the evil Dan Snyder from immediately shipped Favre to Minnesota for a king’s ransom?
I suppose that would be in the trade agreement, but man, that would be funny.

If something like this happens, I’ll be a much happier Packers fan. I hope your information is correct on this.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
i mean, it’s probably not going to happen. i don’t think the skins even have the cap space…
and… snyder’s a changed man, right? he wouldn’t be stupid enough to throw away ANOTHER 1st round pick for a couple of mediocre seasons with a prima-donna, over-the-hill vet, right? i mean, this time?

Why would anyone give up a 1st rounder for a guy who is probably going to be released?

I no longer care where he ends up.
17 seasons was enough, you’re done, Favre. Get over it.

As an Eagles fan I can only pray that Favre is the starting QB for the ‘Skins next season. I would get to watch Favre hand two games to the Birds while at the same time crushing the confidence of the Redskins’ QB of the future and setting the Skins back years. I think thats a win-win(-win) situation. And all of this comes with the added bonus, which everyone can share in, of watching Farve play outside the friendly confines of Packerland where terrible throws and back breaking interceptions receive boos instead of mindless cheers.

“Also, Redskins owner Dan Snyder has a history of targeting big-name players”
As we all know, ol’ Dan hasn’t had the greatest luck with this strategy so I’ll assume that Brett will chew up a tremendous amount of cap dollars for years to come and then get cut after he throws 40 INTs this season. I think Deion is finally off the books at least so he has that going for him. Danny thought he fleeced Jerry on that signing.

Haha, I hope this happens. Giving up a 1st round pick for Favre would be so bad for that franchise but Snyder is notorious for stupid moves like this.

A first-rounder for a has-been QB that has a year or two left…sounds like a trade the Redskins would make to me!
Actually, it makes no sense. They have Jason Campbell that is, err, coming along. They’re not going to put him on the bench and set him years back on his development for Favre.

Having a WCO isn’t the only qualification for bringing in Favre. There’s also cap space and team need at the position. Washington has neither.

Nice rumor, but it doesn’t make sense. The Skins traded a 1st round pick to get Jason Campbell. His last season at Auburn was his most sucessful, and he was running the West Coast offense. Plus, this is the make or break year for JC as the franchise QB, why would they put him on the bench for a guy who might (should) retire after the season? The only way this might happen is if Vinny convinces Danny that a Superbowl win is a Lock with Farve.

If my beloved Skins actually trade ANYTHING to the Packers for Favre I might have to consider rooting for a new team. How about the Ravens? Purple and Football go together if the football is of the “flag” kind IMO, but if the Skins get Favre I might learn to like the color purple.

Leititride…..I hope you are talking from a Packers standpoint….Cause Favre would be eaten alive in the NFC East. This aint the Vikes and Lions and even the Bears secondaries we are talking about here.
CowBoys and Eagles have just beefed up their corpd the Giants have been doing it through the Draft the last few years…….Brett would be sure to have another 06.

After all Jason Campbell’s gone through for the team? This would be horrendous news.
I love Favre, but he’s on a world tour to destroy any remaining credibility. Why don’t stars learn from people like Joe Montana and Jerry Rice who add one or two mediocre years with teams that nobody wants to remember them playing for?
As a Redskins fan, I would weep for three reasons:
1) Jason Campbell’s talent and heart will be wasted in D.C.
2) The new philosophy of collecting draft picks and staying away from aging/overpriced free agents will be exposed as a sham
3) The Snyder/Cerrato administration will have proven incapable of sticking to their guns
Just say no, Vinny!

Wait a minute…..I thought Favre has “never envisioned playing with another team”.
Hell, he even said last night that he’s not sure if he’ll even come back. Favre is knowingly generating all this drama and he doesn’t even know if he’s coming back!?
I hope Favre does come back next year so he can throw 30 INT’s and humiliate himself even more and then leave the game a disgraced buffoon.
