In Part Two of an interview with Fox News, quarterback Brett Favre seemed to indicate, fairly clearly, that he isn’t incluned to call the Packers’ bluff and report to training camp as the No. 2 man on the depth chart with a $12 million salary.
“I don’t want to go back there just to stick it to them,” Favre said.
Much of the rest of the interview sounded at times like Part One, and the entire exercise still strikes us as an attempt by Favre and agent Bus Cook to cajole Packers fans into pressuring the front office to let him go. If that’s the case, then Packers fans need to realize that they might be paving the way for Brett to play for the “Minneapolis” Vikings, as interviewer Greta Van Susteren called them. Twice.
Favre also suggested a couple of times in Part Two that he still might not play at all, and he seemed to acknowledge that his only option is to hope that the Packers will trade him to a team for which Favre would want to play.
Finally, Van Susteren showed clips of the sparsely-attended rally aimed at pushing the team to bring him back. And she and Favre actually acted like it was a sign that the presence of roughly 200 people reflects a sufficient groundswell of support to demonstrate that Favre has real clout.
Our take based on the events of the past few days is that he doesn’t have nearly as much as he thinks he has, and that he’s losing more and more of it all the time.

How much money do you think Favre gave Greta Van Susteren to conduct this “interview?” She didn’t ask a single difficult question and pretty much just added comments that agreed with and kept his rambling going. For example: When Favre kept saying that the only way the Packers would have him on the team is as a backup: Shouldn’t she have jumped in there and pointed out “well actually no, Ted Thompson never said that.” I mean as a reporter she could have easily read the transcript of Ted Thompson’s interview, or read the article that I, a college student with no training in journalism, could find on the ESPN homepage a few days ago http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=3484936
This interview was such a joke and didn’t even call out Thompson about those three mistakes. Would it be possible that she released the original interview to some media outlets to see what the public reaction would be once they found out he called out McCarthy, Thompson, and the Packers and then decided to cut the stuff when she realized it made Favre look more like the selfish prick he is??
Favre says how he 100 percent wants to play, well then he should show up. He says he doesn’t want to show up to stick it to the Packers but yet also 100% wants to play…but then he tries to make the Packers look bad, like they’re the ones who don’t want him. If he wants to play for the Packers and wants to play football then he should request to be activated. The Packers never said he couldn’t be the starter so why not try to be. It’s obvious he in now way wants to play with them and by making this whole soap opera he’s just going to hurt the team of teammates that he supposedly likes alot.

LOL. Only 30 people showed for the rally in Milwaukee (Wisconsin’s largest city). So far two rallies combined have garnered attendance of not even 250 people. Yep, Favre really has the fans behind him.

Watching the interview, it looked to me like Brett Favre is a man who wants to to be a starting QB, knows he is still a very good NFL QB, and feels sad because Green Bay wants to move on and he also knows Green Bay management will not take the risk of trading or releasing him, at least until Rodgers proves he is good and can stay on the field. These facts lead Favre to conclude that he may not be able to be a starting QB this year, even though he wants to, and other teams may want Favre as a starter.
The way I see it if the Packers were willing to welcome Favre back in March, the fact that he has been indecisive should not change that fact. Aaron Rodgers just has to wait, hope the ironman goes down or hope he plays like crap. Watch what happens everyone. Favre will start week 1 for Green Bay. I’m sure players would feel much better with Favre at QB. If he does show up to camp (as I expect him to) he will end up starting. The Packer’s management cannot risk alienating veteran players like Al Harris, Charles Woodson, Donald Driver, and Nick Barnett and Aaron Kampman. These players are the core of the Packers, and I suspect they would much rather see Favre as the starter, then either as the back-up in Green Bay or a starter for some other team.
Time will tell if Ted Thompson is willing to risk alienating the core of foodball team in order to assert his ego, but I suspect it will be Brett Favre who “wins” the ensuing battle for starting QB of the Green Bay Packers by the time the season rolls around.

Why did Favre keep saying that ‘they say I must be a backup when I come back’ when clearly he hasn’t heard any of TT’s interviews this weekend, where he clearly stated ‘we don’t know where how this would end up. Right now Aaron Rodgers is our starter.’ That sounds to me like he knows that if Favre comes back and he can’t deal him, that he’s going to have to most likely start him. TT has handled this with class and intelligence. Favre not so much. It is too bad he didn’t just make a better decision. I’ve been a huge fan of his, but I’m a Packer fan first, and I’m tired of him yankin our chains.
Boy that Greta is a good interviewer. Look for her this Fall on Sundays with more ‘hard-hitting’ interviews.

He still did not sound like he was 100% sure he wants to play. I can see why TT and MM have their doubts. If he really wants to play and play for the Packers like he stated earlier, he should tell TT and MM that he will show up for training camp to compete for the starting job. If he doesn’t think he can beat out AR, he really does need to stay retired.

I love all these people saying that Ted Thompson didn’t say last weekend that Favre could come back but only as a backup. How do any of them know what Ted Thompson said to Favre in private ??? They don’t. TT is in full CYA mode right now.
Thompson DID say that Aaron Rodgers is the starter. So what does that tell you ??? Favre said several times that Thompson and McCarthy told him “coming back to Green Bay is not an option”. What does THAT tell you ???

The more Favre talks, the more he makes it look like this has all been an elaborate scheme to give Thompson a black eye, and that’s all it’s ever been. It sure doesn’t seem like he ever had any intention of playing this year for anybody. He has so bungled the public relations so badly that he’s ruining his legacy. The Madden Curse strikes again.

wow, those were some really nice preplanned softball tosses there, greta. surprised you didn’t talk about his father or something. he’s not even WILLING TO COMPETE for the starting job. wow, i thought hall of famers were always willing to compete for their jobs. if he can’t compete, he needs to retire. he’s not entitled to what he thinks he is, a starting job with no competition, just because he walked away. what’s he afraid of? and apparently, greta doesn’t realize that players who retire don’t get paid but still have contracts that they’re bound by SHOULD they return. how pathetic. than for him to try to play the southern, “aw shucks” hick by saying teams might not even be interested. sure, brett. but to publically claim the packers are turning down offers to spite you is classless. not only couldn’t that happen because other teams would claim otherwise but they have no reason to do it. here’s to my packers moving forward without the man who some believe is BIGGER than the team. he’s lying and full of crap. kudos to thompson for standing strong.

“The Packer’s management cannot risk alienating veteran players like Al Harris, Charles Woodson, Donald Driver, and Nick Barnett and Aaron Kampman. “.
Hmmm, i wonder how these players really do feel about favre thinking he should be handed the starting job and doesn’t even want to compete for it in training camp. i bet his teammates would be really happy to know he doesn’t have that competitive fire in him to fight for his job but he “will” have the fire to fight for a victory in a game. just like against the giants.
how do his teammates feel about the fact he obviously believes he IS bigger than the team? don’t put words in their mouths, i believe thompson and mccarthy are gaining a lot more respect and credibility in the lockerroom than most packer “fans” are acknowledging by taking the proper stand. no player is bigger than the team and EVERYONE has to earn their job every day.

wisconsin fans are nothing but bandwagoners.
Seriously. The only chance the packers have of going to the super bowl next year is if farve is their qb. That Cal qb will either get hurt very soon into the season or he’ll brain fart and they’ll have to pull him. The rest of the packers actually could play well. They just need a solid qb.

Hey Everybody,
It was widely reported, on PFT DOT COM and elsewhere, that the Packers had first issued a statement that they had “moved on”, and they later issued a statement that Favre was “welcome to return as the back up”. Most of the informed sources reporting interpreted the backup invitation as a “bluff” to Favre’s request for outright release. It was reported all over this site, and it was reported elsewhere…
It’s the release part that’s the most scary to Packers Management. Not only is Minneapolis a really nice place (I been there - Long Winters, but a nice place…), but they also have a football team with a familiar offense for Brett, a young all-pro running back in Adrian Peterson, and a Smokin’ Defense. If Favre ends up there, the Vikings would coast to the division title while Packers fans watch Aaron Rogers struggle with Blitz Pickups all season.
I believe Favre when he says Packers Management told him they don’t want him back and they don’t want him in the league. Their response to him and their coded stattments say exactly that. But I think in the final analysis, they’ve gotta let him play somewhere. It’ll be easier with the players, the fans and the league as a whole if they bring him back as the Starter.
The Packers’ only choice now is how hard they wanna make it on themselves… FREE BRETT FAVRE!!!!

After the 2nd part of the interview just aired it’s painfully obvious that Brett Favre has been totally and completely manipulated by those close to him. First of all, the Packers never stated that Favre would be a backup. They said he could “fill some role”, and that role wasn’t specified as even being that of a player in 2008. 2nd of all, the Packers never stated they “were just trying to protect his legacy” as Favre indicates. They simply stated they care about the legacy of the Packers and that of Brett Favre. They NEVER stated that he wasn’t being granted a release in order to “protect his legacy”. They never said they were or weren’t engaging in any specific course of action in order to “protect his legacy”.
I think Brett’s dumbazz brother, his agent Bus Cook, and the other sychophants he’s surrounded himself with need to start giving it to him straight instead of spinning every single statement by the Packers to appear something it wasn’t. Those close to him are only hurting him. When Van Susteren asked him if the Packers specifically told him he’d be a backup he replied “well….that’s what i’m hearing”. Ummmm……what!? That’s what you’re “hearing”?! You should be talking to the team for yourself. Stop allowing your inner circle to disseminate Packers public statements for you, try reading them for yourself.
And i’m quite sure the Packers haven’t concealed any trade offers from Favre, as he insinuates in the 2nd part of his interview. I guess he just can’t believe that somebody doesn’t want to jump on board and pay $12 million for a soon-to-be 39 year old QB with maybe 1 or 2 years left in him (notice I didn’t say good years).
Ah, and then there was the gem that Favre believes he no longer has to compete for a starting QB spot. He thinks he’s earned his free ride for as long as he wants it. In fact Brett got visibly upset when he was asked why he doesn’t go back to Green Bay and compete for the job. If he’s so sure of himself and if Rodgers such the terrible QB that Favre Homers make him out to be then what’s he afraid of? That the Great Brett Favre will be beaten out for his job maybe? Sorry Brett, aging veterans will always have to prove their worth with the constant influx of young hot talent into the NFL. You’re no different.
