As the bridge between the Packers and quarterback Brett Favre continues to send green-and-gold plumes of smoke high into the Wisconsin sky, plenty of folks are throwing out all sorts of potential trade scenarios.
A popular subject contained in various e-mails we’ve received over the course of the day is a trade of Favre to a team other than the Vikings or the Bears, followed by a trade of Favre to a team like the Vikings or the Bears.
Don’t count on it happening. Our guess is that the Packers would include in any trade of Favre to someone other than the Vikings or the Bears a provision that, if Favre thereafter is traded to the Vikings or the Bears, the compensation will increase to a first-round pick, or more.
Though the Packers can’t release Favre with an understanding that he won’t sign with certain teams, the Packers presumably can condition compensation on what the team that acquires Favre’s rights does with them.
It’s no different than, for example, the trade that gave the Broncos a seventh-round pick that would have upgraded if Jake Plummer had reported to the Bucs. Or the deal that will send a fourth-round pick from Tennessee to Dallas if Pacman Jones isn’t reinstated for the 2008 season.
It’s a conditional draft pick — and the condition that would increase the compensation in the case of a Favre trade would be the re-trading of Favre to a team like the Bears or the Vikings.
We asked NFL spokesman Greg Aiello whether such a term would be enforceable, but Aiello declined to speculate. He said that the trades are considered on a case-by-case basis, and that the league office would evaluate the terms that are presented, if/when trade terms are reached.
Still, look for the Packers to use this or some other device in order to ensure the worst-case scenario of Favre showing up on the night that they retire his jersey while wearing a white and purple one.

Who is this old man Ted Thompson? He looks like he is a product of the era when leather helmets were still used in the league. Has he ever thrown a completion? Or been a GM before? Is he a local hick from Wisconsin? Who is this football expert?

Not sure who TT is? You should check out his bio as a player & front office. Very impressive. Did a great job in GB’s front office then went to Seattle and came back. On his return to GB he has restored a team that was bankrupt of talent & was getting worse. In three years he has the youngest team in the NFL @ 13-3. Not bad for a guy from Texas!

Just release him. The Vikings aren’t going to sabotage Jackson to squeeze a year or two out of Favre. Nor is he the diffrence between the Vikings being a Super Bowl threat and just a playoff team. Jackson is reportedly looking very good in camp and the Vikes are pretty happy about it.
And the Bears? Same deal. He’s not the player that will get them over the hump. The Bears are simply not the same team that went to the Super Bowl 2 years ago.
Either way he’ll be released or traded. The Pack should trade him to San Fran and then cancel the ceremony to retire his number indefinitely. They should give Brian Brohm #4 just to spite him.

ON HIS WIKIPEDIA PAGE RIGHT NOW AND I DIDNT PUT IT THERE
“Thompson was fired from his position as Packers General Manager in July of 2008, once the world realized that he was destroying the vitality of one of the world’s most beloved sports franchises. Out of kindness, he was then rehired by the Packers as Aaron Rodgers’ personal ball washer.”

Sorry Bob, but there’s a good reason why TT, and not any of you Favre Homers, is the GM of the Green Bay Packers. He has the personal disconnect to make personnel decisions without being clouded by emotional attachment. If you can’t do that in his job, your team is toast. Rice and Montana Homers whined about their guys being swept aside, but it was obviously the right decision. That’s because football front office types (and NOT fans) are in charge.
You guys are all living in the past. Dude had one really good year in the 2nd half of his career and all the sudden he’s found the fountain of youth. LOL. And I also suppose the team around him had nothing to do with the packers getting to the NFCCG huh? Favre should’ve ended on a high note while he still could. Now he’s going to go out publicly humbled, disgraced, and humiliated. From what I see most GB fans are grounded in reality and not fan-based Homerism as far as the Drama Queen’s antics.

Hey Mike,
Those insights to the potential trade options for Green Bay are interesting. The Pack would not want Brett to haunt them this year and potentially for another year or two in their own division and stick it to ‘em.
Also, I was interested in the position Bob S. just took. Not to attack GM Ted Thompson personally but, who the heck is he (????) and who is he especially in comparison to the football legacy he is dealing with so casually in Brett Favre?
Mr. Thompson seems to be a mature guy. Seems he would be wise enough to realize that fans could look back in a few years and see that a legacy player was dealt with in a respectful fashion, or that a legacy player was tossed out on the side of the road in a way that tainted everything the Packers have accomplished the last couple of decades.
Either way, the fans will look back and see his signature all over the result. The stakes are high and the team and league fans have a long memory…

hey bob s., from reading some of your past comments and this one, are you new to the nfl game? have you never seen a man with gray hair? and since thompson was a linebacker in the nfl, no, he probably never did throw a completion but he threw far fewer interceptions than favre. no, he’s never been a gm before green bay but since he worked under ron wolf in the 90’s and mike holmgren in the 2000’s he might have learned a thing or two about building a team. only a fool would question his merits as a gm at this point. there’s a whopping 10 players left from the disaster he inherited from mike sherman in 2005 and built an nfc championship team in just 3 years and with the look of a team that could compete for quite a few years. so yes, he is a football expert.
as for your response regarding lombardi, adderly and hornung, those situations have no comparison whatsoever to this deplorable favre mess. lombardi retired due to health and DIDN’T have a contract (um, favre’s has 3 years minus 1 day since yesterday) when he went to washington, adderly was traded and won 7 (7!) world championships for his career and hornung never played for a another team besides green bay.
this isn’t about favre playing for someone other than green bay. it’s about the fact he has three years left on his contract, he retired, now HE wants out of his contract and is blaming the team for his mess. the team never told him he couldn’t play after he retired, they only said the starting job wouldn’t be handed to him since he already gave it up to someone else. you think if lombardi wanted to come back after the pack had hired phil bengston they would have fired bengston before playing a game? no, he was too classy for that.
favre needs to check his ego, show up for camp and fight for the job like everyone else. apparently, he feels his service has entitled him into never having to compete for a job. would he win it? probably, but in the nfl, everyone is fighting for their jobs, even tom brady. but i guess favre feels the team owes him a mulligan at the expense of the honor of everyone else who has been committed to earning their jobs on the field. favre feels he can earn his job through the media and by strong-arming the organization.
if a hall of famer isn’t willing to fight for his job than he shouldn’t play. in fact, if favre isn’t willing to fight for his job, i don’t want him, nor anyone else on the packers. thompson and the packers owe him nothing, other than the right to come back and play for them in whatever role he ends up in. they’ve already said he can do that. play with your contract and don’t blame others for your “early” decision to walk away.
the packers have been around a long time before favre and were wuite successful and they’ll be a round a long time after him.

Hey, Mike! There is no guarantee that the double trade couldn’t still happen. Possible scenario? Trade to Whatever Whosits team in AFC, then MN offering a conditional first round pick to the Whosits, just to make the unthinkable happen. If MN thought they had enough in place that bringing in Brett just might garner them the long-lamented RING? Just supposin…
I am reminded in all of this that while GB fans are awesome and love the heck out of their team, should one of them tick them off? They get bitter, baby!

After the 2nd part of the interview just aired it’s painfully obvious that Brett Favre has been totally and completely manipulated by those close to him. First of all, the Packers never stated that Favre would be a backup. They said he could “fill some role”, and that role wasn’t specified as even being that of a player in 2008. 2nd of all, the Packers never stated they “were just trying to protect his legacy” as Favre indicates. They simply stated they cared about the legacy of the Packers and that of Brett Favre. They NEVER stated that he wasn’t being granted a release in order to “protect his legacy”. They never said they were or weren’t engaging in any specific course of action in order to “protect his legacy”.
I think Brett’s dumbazz brother, his agent Bus Cook, and the other sychophants he’s surrounded himself with need to start giving it to him straight instead of spinning every single statement by the Packers to appear something it wasn’t. Those close to him are only hurting him. When Van Susteren asked him if the Packers specifically told him he’d be a backup he replied “well….that’s what i’m hearing”. That’s what you’re “hearing”?! You should be talking to the team for yourself. Stop allowing your inner circle to disseminate Packers public statements for you, try reading them for yourself.
And i’m quite sure the Packers haven’t concealed any trade offers from Favre, as he insinuates in the 2nd part of his interview. I guess he just can’t believe that somebody doesn’t want to jump on board and pay $12 million for a soon-to-be 39 year old QB with maybe 1 or 2 years left in him (notice I didn’t say good years).
Ah, and then there was the gem that Favre believes he no longer has to compete for a starting QB spot. He thinks he’s earned his free ride for as long as he wants it. Sorry Brett, aging veterans always have to prove their worth with the constant influx of young hot talent into the NFL. You’re no different.

“Ted Thompson is a great General Manager.”
There is no such thing! Teams want their GM and their scouts to get all the credit but it is the players who win or lose the games. That along with good or bad refs calls, plain luck , unforeseen injuries, etc.
Thompson was a bottom feeder as a NFL player almost his entire career. Which means he was always getting paid minimum as he envied those Oilers on the team earning mucho more. So now he gets even with a rich player. I personally hope Favre doesnt play for the Packers and Rodgers flops and Thompson is flushed down the drain. And I hope it takes the Packers another 10 years or more to ever make the playoffs again.
This coming Sunday on NFL Network -Giants/Packers OT NFC Title game is telecast again.
Favre got the Packers farther than Rodgers ever will.

Ted Thompson is an arrogant piece of crap. A good GM that is guiding the NFC runner-up team that is returning EVERY important player except one would do everything in his power to get that last piece of the puzzle in place. Favre is that piece! Love Favre or hate him, but nobody with an ounce of football knowledge would claim that the Packers have a better chance of winning this year with Aaron Rodgers at the helm rather than Brett Favre.
I, as a lifelong Packer fan, want to see them win it all again. They were one play away from the Super Bowl last year and there is no reason to believe they wouldn’t be in contention again this year as long as the best quarterback at their disposal is put on the field.
As the legendary Vince Lombardi once said: “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” That’s what this discussion should be about. Forget Ted Thompsons arrogance; forget Brett Favre’s ill-advised retirement audible…just win the damn Super Bowl!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Florias job now is to stir up a Favre storm. If you notice….who writes all these crappy articles? FLORIA. Egomaniac….much like Ted Thompson. Hated the guy from day one and there is NO bigger fan of the Pack. I’ve followed this from day one. I got your back, Brett…..thanks for 17 years and hopefully more.

A flip trade to the Vikes or Bears would be easy no matter how the Packers wrote it.
For example…
Favre is traded to the Raiders for a 3rd round pick with a clause saying that if the Raiders trade Favre to any team in the NFC North the draft pick is raised from a 3rd rounder to TEN 1st round picks.
