Yesterday Florio told you that Tarvaris Jackson wasn’t letting speculation about Brett Favre affect his preparation for the upcoming season. His coach is singing the same tune.

Brad Childress spoke with Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune today and offered no hesitation about his faith in Jackson as the team’s starter for the 2008 season. “I just think he’s right where he needs to be in terms of being a third-year quarterback. Would I liked to have seen him play 16 games last year? Absolutely I would have. But I think he’s in a natural evolution. He understands what it means to play an NFL season as a starter with all eyes on him, dissecting everything.”

Since there’s little chance of Favre ending up in Minneapolis, no matter how much he’d like to be released by the Packers, Jackson will be the starting quarterback for the Vikings this season. Childress’s words, then, are a reassurance to the quarterback that they weren’t even thinking about making a change under center. How much truth there is to that is up for debate but it’s an important message nonetheless.

Childress also said he was impressed with the way Jackson has handled all of the rumors, saying that “he’s building equity that way.” With a good defense and strong running game already in place Jackson will be in position to quiet all the doubters this season. It appears he’ll get every chance to do so.
