Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that free-agent running back Kevin Jones, a first-round pick in 2004, will sign a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears.
Chicago was a no-brainer destination for Jones, given that the team dumped its own first-round bust of a back, Cedric Benson, in June.
The move conflicts with coach Lovie Smith’s subsequent comments, during which he said that the team had no plans to add a veteran tailback to replace Benson.
“We don’t have any plans to do that,” Smith said. “From Matt [Forte’] to Adrian Peterson to Garrett Wolfe, to P.J. Pope, Matt Lawrence, we like all of our players and those are the ones that we’re going with.”
Whether it was a smokescreen aimed at keeping Jones’ asking price low or the result of a fears that Forte’ won’t be ready to be the Week One starter as a rookie, the team has changed course, dramatically.
Jones was released by the Lions earlier this year. The finalists for his services were the Bears and the Steelers.

You really think Kevin Jones is a bust?

The Bears still have the worst offense in the league.

I was kinda hoping to see him stay in the division, because you know he wanted the chance to play the Lions.

Nice pickup for Da Bears. Little risk / high reward in signing Jones who IMO still has tremendous upside. I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts the season on the PUP, and has a chance to play later in the season when he is healthier.

As a Lions fan this only assures me that KJ will get fully healthy, come back stronger than ever, and royally stick it to Detroit. Good times to come… ugh.

Good move. Jones has had a great attitude during this offseason finding a new home and had said he doesn’t mind sharing carries. Good fit for both sides now if they could only find a QB………..

Very nice signing! I agree he has a ton of upside and low risk high reward. If he comes back healthy and Forte turns into a solid back then we are going to have a damn good backfield. Now we just need to sign Brett Faaa, Brett Faaaaaa. I can’t even say his name anymore. F it, let’s just bring back Jim Harbaugh.

Hahahaha!
A gimpy Jones is your savior? And old man Favre will lead the offense??
That simply states that the bears roster is in poor health.
A number of teams looked at Jones and passed - suggests that his health is very much a concern, at least for this year. QB is a weakness, but do you think Favre can learn the offense in one training camp? And the biggest issue - who will the QB throw to??
Jones may be an upgrade, but only for a poorly equipped offense.

My man NYBearsFan! Glad to see you’re on the same page with me with respect to the KJ Signing. I just hope Angelo goes 2 for 2 in signing supposed first round bust running backs named Jones
As for “he who shall no longer be named”…no way. It wouldnt make a difference for us this year anyhow. I agree with Peter Schrager on the Bears offense:
“Q: Is the Bears offense the worst unit in the entire league?
A: Well, the quarterback duo of Grossman and Orton has to be in the bottom half of the league. The running attack — a trio of unproven guys not named Benson or Jones — has to be in the bottom quarter of the league. The offensive line — anchored by a rookie tackle out of Vanderbilt — is a giant question mark. And the receivers? Well, there may be no worse depth chart in the NFL.
Brandon Lloyd
Marty Booker
Mark Bradley
Rashied Davis
Earl Bennett
Devin Hester
In other words . . . Yuck.
So, Bears fans, you tell me.”

I don’t know how well the Bears will do without a QB upgrade this year…
But I predict that Kevin Jones will add a late season threat at RB for them.

The BEARS stole a good player, especially after dumping Cedric B.
Now they could win 7 games or more.

Definately an upgrade over Ricky Will… I mean Ced Ben. I’d love to see some salary numbers, though.

The Steelers had about as much interest in Kevin Jones as they did in Steve DeBerg or Korzilla coming back… outside of KJ’s agent and a Steeler rep watching the workout, what real interest was there? Frankly, weren’t there a number of teams that dangerously neglected watching him try out because he is good when healthy?
The Steelers signed Mendnhall and cut Dookie. They then had FWP, Mendenhall and Gary Russell. The Steelers would have had a hard time explaining why they cut Dookie and added KJ unless he took a well below market deal, and even then Dookie’s best year was last year, albeit the last two games he played like…. a…. turd….
