It won’t be long before cobalt blue Seahawks jerseys start popping up here in West Virginia, what with former Mountaineers fullback Owen Schmitt now officially a member of the team.
According to Scout.com, Schmitt, a fullback and a fifth-round draft choice, has agreed terms on a four-year deal, which includes the minimum base salaries and a signing bonus of roughly $158,000. (As with Redskins quarterback Colt Brennan, it appears that Schmitt didn’t receive a fourth-year escalator that would bump the base to the first-round restricted free agency tender if Schmitt reaches certain performance triggers in his first three seasons.)
Schmitt is a living legend to WVU fans, an old-school throwback who cemented his place in the hearts of all West Virginians with this tribute after the Mountaineers shellacked the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl.

So what is the over/under of broken face masks in Schmitt’s first three years in the NFL?
Money on five.

You would not believe how much I was hoping that the Packers would draft this guy! Seattle got one hell of a steal getting him in the 5th round.

He’s a great player and a total class act. Regardless of who he plays for, I hope he has a long and great career.

Can’t help but root for that dude throughout his career. He represents a lot of what is awesome about sport.

i like to see guys like this succeed. they arent given the ball enough in the pros. they are also often asked to change positions so they can block for some jackass who specializes in running out of bounds or takes plays off.
watching this guy cleat dbs (or anyone!) into the dirt (as a pro) would be very enjoyable.

I hope he does well. At the very least I think we can be sure that he’ll be the one rookie who’s rookie inauguration haircut will be an improvement.

As a West Virginia alum and a Philadelphia Eagles fan, I was really pissed when the Birds didn’t hop on this guy in the draft. Instead we’ve tried to convert a DT and a TE to play FB. Schmitt’s an absolute freak and will be a stud at the next level.

Hawks fans are stoked. Living in Richmond, saw a bunch of WVU games on TV and almost always came away being more impressed with O. Schmitt than Slayton and White.(a couple of Reggie Bush jrs).
You’re right though Atlas, Weaver will tough to beat out, he’s a beast too.
Weaver, Schmitt, Duckett lined up behind Hass on short yardage….OOOOO Schmittt!!!

Classy bunch of dipz in here who make fun of someone with a harelip.
Any defects in your families, boys, besides your stagnant gene pool?
Pro Bowl in three years. And Ooooooh Sssschmitttt will be resounding from the field when you watch the Hawks playoff games at home in two years.
The guy cried on the field, yet he’s compared to Bronco Nagurski. That’s worth big time points.
You’ll eat your slurs, curs. Crawl back in your caves and simmer.
Take names and keep reminding these one digit wonders of their loutism, Florio.
My only problem is the official NFL jersey lists him only as Schmitt, instead of O. Schmitt which they should have done because the Hawks also drafted and signed Tyler Schmitt. So ya gotta buy a vowel if you want the jersey to express succinct emotion.
