Our pal Dan Patrick isn’t happy this morning. Specifically, he’s not happy about a recent column from our other pal Jason Whitlock of FOXSports.com, in which Whitlock criticizes the addition of Patrick to NBC’s Football Night in America.
And Dan is willing to put his money where his mouth is. We think. (More on that later.)
The ball got rolling with this “tell us what you really think, Big Sexy” comment from Whitlock last week: “What in the hell is NBC doing adding another person to its NFL studio show who doesn’t really care or know anything about the NFL?”
Whitlock also offered a person-by-person assessment of each of the other forty-eight six members of the show, with only Cris Collinsworth getting a gold star, and most of the rest of them sporting dunce caps.
Patrick addressed the Whitlock column on Monday during his radio show, partially with tongue in cheek and partially deadly serious. He called the Whitlock column “disappointing,” and said that it would make far more sense to review the revamped show after Whitlock actually sees it.
Patrick also pointed out that it’s not his role to have an encyclopedic knowledge of pro football or to be able to break down the Cover Two defense. Patrick’s job will be, with Keith Olbermann, to read the highlights of the day’s games.
“Don’t tell me I don’t know how to do highlights,” Patrick said. “I don’t break down game footage. . . . You have roles on the show.”
Patrick also was a bit dismayed that Whitlock would question Patrick’s knowledge of or passion for pro football without asking Patrick about the subject. “My job is not to break down the game,” Patrick said. “If i don’t know, I’ll ask. If Jason doesn’t know, he didn’t ask. He just wrote it.”
And here’s the kicker, though we doubt Patrick was totally serious about it. Dan has offered not to do the NBC show if Curt Menefee of FOX and James Brown of CBS, both hosts of their respective networks’ pregame shows, have more knowledge about the NFL than Patrick.
The flip side of the coin here is that, if Patrick has more knowledge than Menefee and Brown, then Whitlock will give up his column at FOXSports.com.
We understand where Patrick is coming from on this. But we also agree with Whitlock when it comes to passion, not knowledge.
One of our biggest criticisms of the NBC studio show has been that Costas and Olbermann, as baseball-first broadcasters, lack the proper love for the sport of football. And even though both are adept at telling viewers about the things that happen when a gathering of grown men is enhanced by the addition of a ball or varying shapes, sizes, and composition, neither project a Chris Berman-style enthusiasm for the game.
The folks watching at home pick up on that kind of stuff. If the people talking at us are naturally and genuinely excited about the things about which they’re talking, we tend to be more excited, too. And thus we tend to care more about the thing about which the folks on the television are talking about. And, consequently, we want to watch more of it.
We’re not suggesting that NBC needs a guy who’ll whoop and holler during the highlights, but we have believed since Day One that NBC’s show lacks passion.
Unlike Whitlock, we’ll wait until the new show debuts before we decide whether Patrick’s presence changes our assessment.

I’ll take the professionalism of Costas over the clownery of Berman anyday. Berman is a joke, I don’t understand how anyone enjoys watching that blowhard. He makes everything about him. Hey Boomer, how bout you show that clip of you catching a pass from Doug Williams back in 1979 again. That’s classic.
Of course, Olbermann and Patrick are the ones who turned Sportscenter into an improv act instead of a real highlights/news show. So NBC just went down the toilet. Brighthouse get me NFL Network you bastards!!

Spot on assessment of the Football Night crew by Whitlock. Collinsworth rocks! I think Peter King adds something, but Obermann takes it away, and then some.
Not that familiar with Patrick, but I don’t care for ‘highlight’ guys anyway!
Great column, Jason Whitlock. And yes, Fox does it better.

You do know that Berman’s first love is baseball and that seems to not to matter. Is there any doubt NBC’s new highlight show will be better with the addition of Patrick. Many will be tuning in to see if these two still have the magic.

Gee, how come Whitlock didn’t manage to make this column about race as he does with most of his columns and just like every single time he is ever on The Sports Reporters?

Few sports columnists ever impress me enough either way for me to even notice their bylines. Jason Whitlock is one of these — and I have noticed that he writes pretty dumb stuff.

Hong Kong Phooey…The NFL Network show is almost a copycat of everything else. The fact that you enjoy Deion Sanders and Eisen over Patrick and Olbermann doesn’t speak much for your tastes.

Good for Dan for standing up for himself. I would rather see Patrick, Olbermann, Whitlock and Collinsworth do a show together. Costas and Olbermann together is already too much smugness and no other former player has the communication skills that Collinsworth has. We want to watch the atha-letes play, not relive the glory days by proxy in between quarters.
Berman makes my ears bleed and from the behind the scenes footage his quality of humanity is as horrible as his combover.

Dan Patrick is doing what he does best, letting hot air flow from his over-inflated ego. I agree with Whitlock 100%, Colinsworth is the only one worth listening to. The issue isn’t football knowledge, its how the viewer responds to the on-air personality. Despite being a blowhard, Patrick is better than the rest. Keep Patrick on with Colinsworth for the highlights, keep Peter King on for the ‘insider’ stuff (most of which can be found on this site hours before the show airs), give the Bus an injection of confidence before each show and you have a decent line-up. Nothing is going to beat Boomer and TJ, but I’d watch it.
note to espn, for the love of god give tj and boomer a full length show after the sunday night game instead of inserting segments into a 4 hour sportscenter.

Whitlock like to cause controversy just because he can. And it worked. His column got the attention he was seeking. But as someone else said here I am shocked that he didn’t use race as an issue.

Florio — you do realize you just wrote something positive/nice about Berman….
Olberman has become one of the meanest and least enjoyable on air talking heads. I had to switch to something else at half time rather than listen to the halftime show. And Costas obviously is only doing it for the money because he clearly never enjoys the game nor has any significant insights to offer. He needs to keep to baseball…

I agree about Costas… Not sure why he’s even on the show. I’m not a humongous fan of Berman and TJ but I did love watching Prime Time. I’m interested to see Patrick and Olberman together again as I grew up watching them do highlights on SportsCenter. They were definitely a good team. I agree that they’ve got too many people on the show though. I would rather see extended highlights of the games themselves rather than watch a bunch of talking about it. Mix in a little Peter King with the highlights (narrated with excitement about the game rather than the ‘just another clip’ feel) and it would be great.

Hong Kong Phooey is right - Chris Berman is a joke. He old schtick is meant for 12 year olds. Being “passionate” about football doesn’t mean you have to be an idiot. Unfortunately, today the networks usually dumb down the game instead of challenging us with useful insight (see Berman, John Madden, Terry Bradshaw, the Brothers Sharpe, Dan Marino, Michael Irvin, Emmit Smith, Steve Young, etc). There are some exceptions - Ron Jaworski, Cris Collinsworth, Troy Aikman are very good at their jobs.
Also, the idea that Costas only does the show for money is a joke. I think he’s pretty well off financially. Sure, he’s known for his baseball acumen, but does that mean he’s uncapable of doing good work for the NFL or any other sport (i.e. the Olympics)? Don’t forget he worked for NBC in the 80s and 90s before they lost the NFL in 1997, and most recently worked for HBO’s Inside the NFL. BTW, he also had a late-late night talk show after Letterman in the early 90s, so he’s more well rounded that you guys think.
I’m not going to apologize for liking intelligent football discussion. That’s one of the main reasons why I like this website. However, the dumb stereotypes on some people (like Costas and Olbermann) belong on second rate blogs, not here.

You didn’t have to like Berman to appreciate NFL Primetime’s superiority to Sunday Night.
Primetime: coverage and analysis of the days games. Highlights are long clips that help you appreciate the feel of the game. Every game feels like a significant event.
Sunday Night: coverage and analysis of “burning issues” (whatever those are). Highlights are short and uneven in coverage. Every on-air personality tries to be the significant event.
Whitlock is right. Sunday Night has a completely different passion than the actual games that were played that day: provide a tepid circus post-game for the same sadists who endure tepid circus pre-game shows.
