The Oakland Raiders appear to be on the verge of adding Paul Hackett to their coaching staff.
Jerry McDonald of the Contra Costa Times reports that head coach Lane Kiffin and Hackett have talked, although nothing will be finalized until Kiffin returns from vacation. Hackett would be an offensive assistant, but it’s not known what his title would be.
The most intriguing part of McDonald’s report is his theory that Raiders owner Al Davis would view Hackett as an immediate in-house candidate if Kiffin were to leave.
After reports this off-season that Davis wanted Kiffin to resign, and that Davis hired James Lofton as an assistant without consulting Kiffin, any change to the coaching staff has to be followed by questions of whether the change was at the behest of Kiffin or of Davis. However, Hackett has a good relationship with both Kiffin and his father Monte Kiffin, and it’s questionable whether Davis would want Hackett running his team. As head coach at USC and the University of Pittsburgh, and as the Chiefs’ and Jets’ offensive coordinator, Hackett has earned a reputation for an overly conservative offensive philosophy.
Hackett was the Buccaneers’ quarterbacks coach last season but was not retained this year.

I’m guessing that another big arm QB’s career will be ruined by trying to jam him into a West Coast offense. The only two big armed guys I’ve seen who have had success in it are Farve and Elway (and it’s debatable whether they were running it *properly*).
Here is a tentative list (and I’m not saying that they guys who were busts would have succeeded in another system, just that they had no chance at all in the West Coast offense):
Akili Smith
Vinny Testeverde (When with the Jets)
Jim Druckinmiller
Michael Vick
Kyle Boller (Baltimore)
Tony Banks (Baltimore)
David Carr (Houston)
Jeff George (Washington & Oakland)

Paul Hackett sucks!
I hope none off you Raiders fans are happy about this.
When he was with the Jets he would not go deep to Santana Moss, nor would he even direct plays to him. See what happened in Washington when he got the ball???
This isn’t a guy you want running your offense.
Al Davis is officially mentally challenged.

well, if all the media stories about the Raiders during the offseason are correct, Kiffin is now coaching at Arkansas after being forced to resign by Al, Rob Ryan is the defensive coordinator for the Jets, Jamarcus Russell is 300 lbs, and the Raiders are moving back to Los Angeles.
the media has been reporting on every little rumor Adam Schefter or a bunch of other media hacks can pull out of their arses, all because of their anti-Raider, pro Shanarat bias.

Ummm….you’re mad at me???
All i did was say that I hope none of the Raiders Fans are happy about this and that Paul Hackett sucks. Look at his track record if u don’t believe me.
And it’s quite evident that Al Davis is out of touch with EVERYTHING. Just because you pay someone a star’s contract, doesn’t mean they’re gonna be a star. Sorry to rain on ur parade.
So if you are still hating on me…then maybe u have a relationship with either hackett or Davis…maybe a manage trois???
Now get back on your knees and stop reading this.

Hackett is not the OC, nor is he the qb coach. Kiffin is under the gun, and Knapp is expected to go to Atlanta at the end of the year with his buddy Jim Mora. Hackett would pressumably be the OC next season; however, like Knapp, whom is also a conservative oc, he would not be calling the plays. Kiffin calls the plays now for the Raiders. He was hired to call the plays. An experienced vetran coach to team up with the inexpreienced Head coach/ play caller is the same formula.
I see the potential contreversey Jerry is talking about, but the truth is nobody plans to fail. If Kiffin is successful in the 08n campaign, Lofton and Hackett will probably keep their same positions. Al runs the operations, and sees that he has one OC who runs the west coast offense that will bolt at the end of the year, and Hackett is another coach that runs the west coast system that is open right now. You have to plan for future, and you might not be able to get Hackett or an experienced OC next season. Kiffin would love to have all young guys on his staff, but the truth is that al wants a mix, and is running the show until he dies.

Hackett called an offense that scored 38 td’s in 2004 and that took the jets to the playoffs. I don’t think they been back since they fired him. Heimindinger did a worse job than hackett. Great signing Al.

I don’t think Hackett is a candidate for replacing Kiffin. More likely, he is a candidate to replace Knapp when he leaves to re-join Jim Mora in Seattle. Mora seems to be the shoe-in for replacing Holmgren in the near future and this would give the Raiders some continuity to the offense if Hackett is around for at least a year before Knapp leaves.

Don’t they have any internets in Oakland??!! Nobody is giggling harder than Chiefs and Jets fans over this, and USC fans I’m sure don’t want Paul Hackett anywhere within 500 miles of their now successful program.

As opposed to the cobwebs on the Raiders’ trophies? Seriously wasn’t Reagan the Presdient last time they won a Super Bowl? Heck I don’t even think they were playing in Oakland at the time.
So how’s the modern NFL working out for those boys in black out there? That salary cap is a bitch huh? Doesn’t seem like Al Davis is any closer to figuring it out after 15 years either, does it?

We will see what his offical title will be…. but my thinking is that he is being brought in as a special tutor for Russell. And from my perspective… Al Davis would ever hire an offensive coordinator who is conservative. Nor a head coach for that matter.
