As soon as the news broke that Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones was charged with felony cocaine possession, we wondered whether the Jaguars would decide whether it was time to set Jones free.

After all, even if Jones were a model citizen, there would be a pretty good case for cutting him: When the Jaguars selected Jones — a college quarterback — in the first round of the 2005 draft, they expected him to improve as he learned the receiver position. Instead, he had career lows in catches and receiving yards in his third year in the NFL, even though the Jaguars’ passing game as a whole improved.

Pro Football Weekly quotes a team source as saying it would be “shocking” to see Jones in a Jags uniform in 2008. The biggest question now appears to be whether the Jaguars will even give Jones a chance to prove himself at training camp, or cut him before then.

If Jones does get cut, there probably wouldn’t be a lot of interest for a player coming off a 24-catch, 317-yard season, although the Cowboys could use another receiver, and owner Jerry Jones isn’t afraid to take chances on guys with rap sheets.
