We heard on July 3 that the Packers’ attitude regarding a potential return from Brett Favre is that, if he wants to play, he needs to show up.
And, as we now understand it, the Packers are exhibiting that same attitude.
Despite reports and suggestions that Favre would be relegated to No. 2 on the depth chart unless and until starter Aaron Rodgers is injured or crashes/burns, we’re told by a source with knowledge of the team’s thinking (but who prefers to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the issue) that Favre would have a fair opportunity to unseat Rodgers, and that Favre’s relegation to backup is a reflection not of the team’s desire that he remain unretired, but of the reality that Rodgers and not Favre took the reps with the starting offense for all of the offseason program.
A significant amount of the coming season’s offense and defense are installed during those T-shirts and shorts sessions. As reported elsewhere (we’re too lazy to look it up right now), the Packers spent the 2008 offseason making tweaks to the offense aimed at tailoring it to Rodgers.
Thus, the team’s position is that Favre would need to prove that he provides a better option than Rodgers come Week One. If Favre does it, then he’ll be the starter.
Frankly, we can’t imagine Favre not winning the job. If Rodgers somehow keeps the job, it would take only one wounded duck or interception during the September 8 opener against the Vikings to spark a deafening chant of “WE WANT FAVRE” from the stands at Lambeau Field.

there is nothing more destructive to discipline than empty threats. it’s true with kids and players being coached. i can’t imagine a more meaningless threat from management.

How many of Favre’s wounded ducks or interceptions will it take to then bring Rodgers back on the field? Intelligent fans…

That’s why this cancer needs to be traded ASAP. Let that Bozo kill a different teams Super Bowl run. Favre’s won 3 playoff games in 10 years. Eli, for God sake won more than that last year. Trade the Ego-manic before he’s even more of a distraction.

What a Joke. There’s Absolutely NO WAY Aaron Rogers is the Better Option at QB than Brett Favre. What “Tweaks” to the Offense could they have put in that Favre won’t be able to do Better. Favre, even at his Age, is Way Better than Rogers. Of Course, this is just an Opinion but then again, that’s what we’re here for… to give our opinions.

Opinions are pretty split on whether Packer fans want Brett back or not. Like it or not he’s made some key mistakes in key games in the playoffs over the past decade or so. His post season numbers are nothing to write home about.
Had Favre posted numbers in 07′ like he did in 06′ and 05′ he probably would have been asked to leave. Brett was very into last season .. went to OTA’s .. minicamps … etc. He even hired a personal trainer, and got in his best shape in years. I’m not sure he’ll be able to come close to duplicating his 07′ numbers given that his committment wasn’t there until just recently.
I truly believe McCarthy and Thompson think it’s the system that makes the QB, and not the QB who makes the system. I think they obviously feel Rodgers will be very successful in their scheme. Rodgers may lack experience, and Favre elite skills, but the Packers have tailored the offense this offseason to suit his skill set.

a key issue in this alleged QB “competition” is Favre’s ironman consecutive starts streak. would there be anyway the monday night favre fest in lambeau week 1 will feature favre’s streak coming to an end because Aaron Rogers beat him out? i doubt it…

(Spoken:)
He went away
And you hung around and bothered me every night
And, when I wouldn’t go out with you
You said things that weren’t very nice
My boyfriend’s back, and you’re gonna be in trouble
(Hey la, hey la, my boyfriend’s back)
When you see him comin’, better cut on the double
(Hey la, hey la, my boyfriend’s back)
You’ve been spreadin’ lies that I was untrue
(Hey la, hey la, my boyfriend’s back)
So look out now, ’cause he’s comin’ after you
(Hey la, hey la, my boyfriend’s back)
Hey, he knows that you’ve been tryin’
And he knows that you’ve been lyin’
He’s been gone for such a long time
(Hey la, hey la, my boyfriend’s back)
Now, he’s back, and things will be fine
(Hey la, hey la, my boyfriend’s back)
You’re gonna be sorry you were ever born
(Hey la, hey la, my boyfriend’s back)
‘Cause he’s kind of big and he’s awful strong
(Hey la, hey la, my boyfriend’s back)
YEAH, Cheese-heads, your boyfriend’s back!

Sure, some of his throws make you scratch your head wondering, “what the hell was he thinking?” But Favre doesn’t throw wounded ducks. They’re very healthy ducks.

Rodgers won’t get bored and start chucking the ball up for grabs. He also won’t shrivel up into the fetal position when the weather gets cold.
All of this is moot, because Favre will be traded.
It will be interesting to see what TT has up his sleeve to get even with Favre. Favre is doing this all on purpose, just to be an A-hole.

If this truly is reality and Favre gets a shot at competing, it would just mean that the Packers are creating a means to say that Aaron Rodgers is the better option without giving the impression they never gave him a shot.
Either way, I’m honestly tired of this story.

I’m with everyone on the trade thing, but who’s got the cap space left for his monster salary? BigEd wants to see the trade go to Tampa, and I think they do have the cap space, but who else?
Although, I’m sure Tampa could keep Garcia for a lot less money, and he knows the system. Also, both Garcia and Favre only have a year or two left in them, so would it really be worth it?

This is the first story I’ve seen that understands the way Ted Thompson operates. He never said Brett Favre wouldn’t be the starter when the season starts. He only said that he’s the back-up to Rodgers today. I believe there will be an open competition, not based on any inside knowledge I have, but on my reading of Ted Thompson’s comments, and now that there is a source to substantiate that, I really think this is what is going to go down. There is no way Favre gets released, but I do think there is a chance he could be traded. The scenario mentioned in this article, however, is the most probable, I think.

You’re not getting it, Lee C. He won’t be a backup. He’s a backup until he unseats Rodgers, and if he doesn’t play better than Rodgers in the Preseason, he’ll be traded or retire then. This is yet another example of why Ted Thompson is a genius.

Tony Romo was 26 when he first got his chance for the Cowboys. He’s doing just fine.
Even if Aaron Rodgers is 25 or 26 when he first gets his shot, that’s 4 or 5 less years of getting tackled and beat on that’ll make him be able to play well into his 30’s if he’s halfway decent.
Rodgers is just a kid. If he’s healthy, he could have a solid 10-12 year career. I hope it’s with the Packers of course.

If the media didn’t skewer things to make a uproar they could have seen this originally when Ted Thompson spoke. He never said Favre would be a backup, all he said was Rodgers is there starter right now (which he rightfully should be since Favre retired twice) and that Favre’s role is undetermined at the time, hinting that he’d have to earn his starting spot, just like any other player.
If the Packers were to say “sure if you come back, you are the starter” what message does that send to Aaron Rodgers? You think he’d feel like the leader of the team if Favre decided not to play for the Packers? Plus that gives Favre complete control over all the executives in the Packers organization. He can just say “I want to be the starter or I want to be released” and the Packers have to comply? If they did why not just go ahead and make him the president of the team, too. By telling Favre what they would do if he requested to be activated they give him the upper hand completely.
By making him compete it shows he is no bigger than the team and it helps the Packers judge his commitment. According to McCarthy, Favre didn’t even say he was 100% committed until July 8th, 6 days ago. And the Packers are just suppose to jump and assume he’s completely committed when he’s retired twice and flirted with retirement the past five years? Technically Favre hasn’t even given the Packers the chance to take him yet. All he’s asked is to be cut. What does that say about his committment to the Packers?
See if he actually is committed and asks to be activated before training camp. If he does: Whether Favre outplays Rodgers or not, if the Packers don’t want him they can make it look like Rodgers won the job and can trade him for a veteran QB and maybe someone to replace Jolly and it still looks like they gave him a chance. I mean why would they pay $12 million to a backup QB? But if Favre does outplay Rodgers and the Packers want him, you keep him and trade Rodgers for a old veteran QB and start training Brohm. Maybe the Packers were getting ready for something like this drafting a top college QB. I mean I think it would have been a better idea to get a veteran to backup Rodgers since he is unproven.

Until, of course, Favre throws pick 289 (think of it, 289 freakin’ interceptions - impressive) to spark a deafening chant of “WE WERE WRONG - OUR SINCERE APOLOGIES TO TED THOMPSON AND MIKE McCARTHY - PLEASE BRING BACK AARON” from the stands at Lambeau Field.
There are Packer fans…and then there are Brett Favre fans.
