Packers coach Mike McCarthy and General Manager Ted Thompson said today that they won’t grant Brett Favre’s request for his release.
But that just means the Packers don’t want Favre to play for another team. It doesn’t mean the Packers want Favre to play in Green Bay this season. Speaking to Chris Jenkins of the Associated Press, McCarthy and Thompson said Favre is welcome to rejoin the team, but that he would have to do so behind starter Aaron Rodgers on the depth chart.
By saying Favre would be a backup and will apparently not even get a chance to compete with Rodgers, McCarthy and Thompson are sending their strongest signals yet that they don’t want Favre back.
Thompson said he had not received any trade inquiries from any teams interested in acquiring Favre.

I think the real reasoning is that if they let Favre go where he wants to go, he will end up with the rival Vikings or Bears. Thompson wants to be in control of Favre’s destination, and he should be. If Favre had handled this like a professional back in March or April, his release request may have been granted. It’s good to see Thompson and McCarthy standing their ground.

As a Viking fan, I love the turmoil in Green Bay, and no, I don’t want Favre with the Vikings. I hope he sits on the bench and costs them $12 million per year. I would love it. Operation Chaos!

Favre should report and refuse to re-negotiate his contract. If the Packers want to play hardball and not grant him his release, then they can pay him $39M to sit on the bench for the next 3 years.

This is great
TT and MM will let Favre rejoin the team, but won’t approve Brett’s request for release. We will see how everything meshes when he shows up for training camp. Now that would be the stupidest thing TT/MM could do.
All those trade rumors started by packer fans aren’t materializing either. Maybe a one to two year qb isn’t worth what you think it is.
Green Bay has a lot to lose, and this is just beginning.
They are loading up a tractor/trailer with egg just for TT/MM, maybe that will wash that holier than thou smirk off of MM’s face.

Ted Thompson is a bone head. They’ll take him back as a back up or trade him? Ted, you better start updating you resume and mailing it out. Do you really want to be the guy who ran off Brett Favre??? Green Bay and all of Wisconsin is about to be a dangerous place for TT.

Thompson is foolish.
Force their hand Brett. There is zero chance Rodgers starts of Favre if they are both on the active roster. Herm Edwards might need to give Thompson some advice. “We play to win the game.”
Thompson is writing his own ticket out of town and McCarthly better be careful or him and his slant eye might be headed out on the same bus.

There is *no* way Green Bay will pay Favre $12M this year to be Rodgers backup, not to mention the emotional chaos that would put Rodgers under. Every mistake would have him looking over his shoulder, some of the players will be clamoring for Favre to start ruining locker room chemistry, and some (if not most) of the fans will be chanting for Favre as well.

I honestly just gained a lot more respect for Thompson and McCarthy. I’m 100% behind what’s best for the packers, and Aaron Rodgers is what’s best for the packers right now. Offensively, the packers spent all of their mini-camps, developing plays and strategies that tailor to the the strengths of Aaron Rodgers. If Brett starts, all of that work would be wasted, and could set the team back weeks into training camp before they get him up to speed. Not to mention how it would hinder the development of the rookies/young players who spent the off-season learning a new system, and would then have to re-learn the old one. I’m convinced that this whole thing will split the packers fan base into 2 groups. At least it’s my take (which I stole from former packer Gerry Ellis):
1)You’ll have the Die-Hard Packer fans (like myself), and are on-board with whatever is best for the packers and the organization, and support Ted Thompson/McCarthy because….well……what have they done to prove they DON”T know what they’re doing? They’ve only put together a 21-11 record while having the youngest team in the league the last 2 years. Anyone with a good football IQ knows, that’s not an easy task.
2)You’ll have the Die-Hard Brett Favre fans (who coincidentally are the same fans that are Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy haters) who just don’t seem to get the big picture.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Brett Favre, I loved watching him play, and I’ll always consider him one of my idols. But, you have to do what’s best for the packers. Right now, Brett Favre thinks he’s bigger than the Packers, and as an organization, you can NEVER let a player get bigger than the team. I don’t care who it is. Mike Sherman did it… and look how things turned out for him..(good luck next year as the head coach of ummmm….oh yeah Texas A&M) It’s extremely detrimental to the team, especially the young players (which they have a lot of) Personally, I think Brett Favre is being very selfish.

They offered to take him back, before they REDID THEIR ENTIRE OFFENSE AROUND AARON RODGERS’ STRENGTHS. But then Favre decided that he DIDN’T want to unretire. Then the Pack drafts TWO QBs and switch their entire offense around. NOW Favre wants to come back.
For all we know, he’ll change his mind again as soon as MM makes him participate in all training camp drills. There is no way Favre can spin this against the Packers. He’s showing that his decision making skills OFF the field are no better than they are ON the field.

Do you blame them? My guess now is that he will try to pull the same stunt that Seau did. Retire, then un-retire for the highest bidding superbowl contender.

A couple of months ago it was said that agent Bus Cook was trying to talk Brett into playing again to get the 3 percent of Brett’s 12 Mio salary.
If the Packers cut Brett Favre, he is never going to get anywhere near 12 Mio from a new team, is he? So isn’t that a bad deal for Cook?

This is going to be good. I can only imagine how ape GB is going to go when Roger’s stumbles. By refusing to allow this guy play for another team they are pretty much admitting he should be the starter but just playing hard ball. Now where’s that popcorn smiley at.
