Scott Favre, Brett Favre’s older brother, says the reason Brett asked the Packers for his release is simple: The Packers don’t want him.
In an interview with Favre family friend Al Jones of the Biloxi Sun-Herald, who can reliably be counted on to give the Favre family spin on any story, Scott Favre says, “Why wouldn’t he want a release? They have moved on. By not saying anything, it says a lot. If they wanted him back, they could have said, ‘if you want to come back, we want you back.’ Why would he want to go back, if he’s not wanted? You tell me?”
Jones criticizes Packers General Manager Ted Thompson for responding to a text message from Favre by saying he was on vacation and couldn’t talk, and he writes that Thompson has “an ego problem.”
If Jones is writing it, that means Favre thinks it. And that means Thompson had better be ready for a PR battle against the most popular player in franchise history.

I’ve heard this has been going on for about a month. If Favre had gone to them in April or May, sometime before minicamp or the draft, things might be different. Waiting until June to decide he wanted to play again really put the team in an awkward place, considering they have Rodgers in place now (and wasn’t he a first rounder?), and they took Brian Brohm as well. They’ve moved on, and then after the fact, Favre wants to unretire. It’s like if I quit my current job, and they replaced me, and 4 months later I go back and ask for my old job. It doesn’t matter if I was the best widget salesman the company ever had, if I’m replaced, I’m replaced. I made my decision and now I must deal with the consequences. Brett should have thought about all this back in February and March.
And if he went to another team–is he going to learn their playbook and develop chemistry with the offense in the next six weeks?
Is anyone else thinking that maybe Brett isn’t grounded in the same reality that the rest of us are in?

Funny how Thompson is the guy that welcomed him back before the draft, only for Favre to change his mind again.
Why is Favre so obsessed with Thompson though? Millions of Packer fans wanted him back for 2008, but the only opinion Favre cared about was Ted Thompson. Thompson has NO ego problem whatsoever, he’s just a weird guy, but one hell of a talent evaluator.

It wouldn’t be a hard PR battle to win for TT. Favre has already made himself appear the bad guy in this whole thing. All the Packers have to do is say nothing more than they’ve already said. Favre’s tearful retirement and private discussions with the team at that time made it a perfectly reasonable course of action for the Packers to move forward without him. Too much time and effort has been spent on Rodgers to prep him as the starter for the this season. Favre sat at home all offseason leaking cryptic snippets to the media about having the itch to play while the team prepared without him in Green Bay.

I’m losing respect for Favre really fast. “By not saying anything, it says a lot.”……. Who is Favre to talk. Who disappeared when all these rumors came out. Favre was nowhere to be seen. All we got was a “text message” to a reporter saying everything were just “rumors”.
As for Jones, his journalism credentials are without a doubt questionable at best. He should change his title to the Favre family PR department director of operations.

I don’t know if I’m starting to find a new found respect for the Packers or not. I severely dislike Brett Favre and his running gag of retirement for 7 seasons now.
A part of me wants to see him return to the NFL as a member of the Bears (or Vikes, Lions, Panthers, etc) and throw 30 INTs, but another part of me wants to see him return to the NFL for the Packers and throw 40 INTs.
Tough call.

This is the problem with the media today. Instead of reporting facts, people like Al Jones have the platform to report their opinions and fabricate news. Irresponsible at best. Funny Al doesn’t think his meal ticket has any ego.
My take on the whole Favre issue is this. For all the people clamoring Favre is the best chance at the Packers winning this season, you need to look no further than that photo of his last pass in the championship game. Aaron Rodgers may not have Favre’s legacy, but I bet Aaron Rodgers plays within the scope of the system and doesn’t let HIS ego take over and try to force the ball where it doesn’t belong. And I tend to believe that is why you saw Rodgers play so well against Dallas last season while Favre stunk the place up. Rodgers was playing within the system and not crapping himself because he didn’t have this huge monkey on his back to perform well against his nemesis.
And all this garbage about Rodgers being brittle. It was unfortunate he broke his foot in his first extended action a couple years ago. Nobody knew it until after the game. That’s pretty tough in my book. Things happen. But he did not get hurt against the Cowboys, he pulled his hamstring in practice after the Cowboy game. Freak occurrence doesn’t mean he is fragile. He very well may miss some time due to injury in his career because most quarterbacks do. But we have seen the exception with Favre rather than the rule.
It isn’t enough to win enough games to get into the playoffs anymore. The Packers have done that several times. Favre is also responsible for the Packers losing 3 times at home in the playoffs, which prior to Favre was unthinkable. Face it, his stats in the playoffs since their last superbowl appearance aren’t very compelling. It’s been a good ride and we’ve been fortunate, but life has to go on, and eventually the Packers are going to have to deal with Favre no longer being here.
I’d much rather have a team win or lose within the system and as a team, than one individual who has been conditioned to believe the hype bestowed upon him decide the fate of the team with his inconsistent play during crucial points of critical games. If the Packers lose with Aaron Rodgers, who cares, they were losing with Brett Favre when it came to the playoffs just as well. Is that enough, who you lose with as the starting quarterback? I thought the goal was to win superbowls?

Favre still has great skills but he won’t shine with another team like he can with the green & gold.
Brett, c’mon back and EARN the starting spot in GB.

Scott Favre is a long-time, proven moron who will do almost anything for some air time. Telling that the only one who will give it to him is the renowned jock sniffer that is Al Jones. Neither of these two clowns should be taken seriously in any way, and Jones will be back to covering the county hog award winner the second his one link to relevance is finally done playing.
Favre’s ‘team’ for this supposed upcoming ‘PR’ war is a gaggle of hillbillies and idiots who exist in the ultra-insulated world of small-town Mississippi where Favre is and will always be a hero. Reacting based on that existence is foolish at best.
Florio - why do you insist on labeling Favre as ‘the most popular player in franchise history.’ Some may feel that way, mostly the post-1992 ‘fans,’ but please look back farther than the early 90’s when assuming anything about this team.
There’s no tangible measure, but many will tell you that Bart Starr, Paul Hornung, Ray Nitschke, and even Don Hutson with the super old-timers are/were more popular than Lord Favre. It’s not simply a given that he has this status.

this is getting ridiculous!! Brett! u can’t hold the packers hostage like this every off season and expect to be wanted. if i recall correctly, noone made u retire (and cry) back in march, or whenever it was. the way i see it, if u would not have retired u would still be the starting quarterback for the pack. this is way past ridiculous actually, and u r destroying your legacy every day this crap continues. not up to me to tell someone they should work or retire, but why not go out now? u r not gonna have a better season than u did last year! u should be emberassed by yourself, being every sports station number 1 story like this. its a joke at this point! go away please!

I never knew wanting to go back to work was selfish. Just because TT drafted Aaron Rodgers doesnt mean Favre has to say i quit.. Favre never asked to draft him. So to think Favre should even put Aaro in the equation is moronic.
Whats another year for Rodgers? Its not like sitting on the bench and watching films (while being paid half a mill) is the worst thing in the world. Heck people in the real world PAY $$ to do what rodgers do but on their own couch

Now when they say thanks but no thanks, he calls his lap dog, Mortenson, so he can report Thompson hurt his feelings. Go screw yourself Favre. Can’t wait for the fans to turn on you for crap.
