In comments at a celebrity golf tournament Thursday, Broncos coach Mike Shanahan defended his often-troubled wide receiver Brandon Marshall and said he’s confident that Marshall can stay out of trouble in the future.

“I can’t go into great detail, for obvious reasons, but Brandon has a good upside and he’s a real good kid,” said Shanahan, per Steve Yingling of the Denver Post. “I feel very good where Brandon’s at. I think he’ll be fine.”

Shanahan suggested that Marshall’s biggest problem is his relationship with the ex-girlfriend who has accused him of domestic violence.

“He’s had problems with one person over and over again, and hopefully he’s smart enough to stay away from her,” Shanahan said.

Shanahan is right that it would probably be best for everyone if Marshall and his ex-girlfriend stay away from each other. But the truth is, Marshall has had problems with more than one person. His ex-girlfriend isn’t the reason Marshall has been cited for drunk driving and, more recently, a lesser traffic offense. And his ex-girlfriend isn’t the one who made him lie about slipping on a McDonald’s wrapper when he injured his arm this off-season.

Per Yingling, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Thursday that the NFL is investigating Marshall but has made no decision about a potential suspension for violations of the league’s personal conduct policy.
