Chris Mortensen of ESPN is reporting that Brett Favre and his agent have sent a letter asking the Green Bay Packers to release him.
According to Mortensen, the letter was sent via overnight mail on Thursday and arrived at the Packers’ facility this morning. Favre is currently on the team’s reserve-retired list, but under league rule, if Favre requests to be taken off that list, the Packers are required to either put him on their active roster or release him. So far, Favre has not made that request.
Mortensen also reports that Favre and agent Bus Cook had a conference call on Tuesday with Packers General Manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy, and Favre told the men he wants to play in the NFL again.
Favre is reportedly in good shape and is regularly throwing and running with a high school team in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
The Packers open training camp on July 27.

If the Packers are smart they will shop Favray around and get a draft pick for him. This notion Favray has that he’s going to call his own shot is really amazing. I hope the Packers jam him but good.

I hope Packers GM Ted Thompson knows what he’s doing by going with Aaron Rodgers after (essentially) one good half of football under his belt, over the man that would have been the league MVP last year - if not for Tom Brady’s unreal season, and got the Packers to the NFC Championship Game.
If Favre ends up in Minnesota (and common logic tells you he wants to stick this as far up Thompson’s arse as he can), I actually fear for his safety. Packer fans remember what happened to Dan Devine’s dog, and it only takes one nutjob to do something stupid.
As I said, I hope Packers GM Ted Thompson knows what he’s doing.

So that brings an easier decision to packers management. They don’t force Bret out; he asked for the release; therfore fans can’t be too upset. They want their warrior to be happy and at the same time they need to start the next chapter of Packers football. The only piece lost to the Packers is whatever trade value they could have gotten but it is better to lose that, than to go through the PR nightmare if they were forced to cut him or sit him on the bench while junior takes the wheel. I think this is pretty close to the best thing that could happen, since Favre is obviously not going to stay retired.

“Cook’s letter did suggest that Favre’s accomplishments for the franchise merited the team honoring his request to be released, also asking that the action be taken “with no strings attached.”
This gives you insight into Brett Favre’s ego. The Packers, if forced, should re-instate him (because they have no other choice), and then trade him to the team that is willing to give the Packers anything of value, a 3rd rounder is probably too much to expect but we can hope, can’t we?

How fricken selfish is this guy? He has had a great long career. Why not retire at the top of your game? This will seriously tarnish the legacy of Brett Farve. It looks as if he is going to need the same kind of wakeup call that Jerry Rice did.

I was born and raised 10 miles from the stadium and I’ve bleed green and gold for 35 years, but if they let Favre play somewhere else, I’m done with the team. A lot of you people are too young to remember life before Favre, but it was 30 years of embarrassment for Green Bay. He not only saved the team, but in many ways the whole town. Too few people respect that. How anyone would turn down Favre for someone whose never started it beyond me.

Thank you Brett, for screwing the Packers over one last time. It’s a team sport, and you’re no team player.
Thank you for every abortion in Dallas.
Thank you for that Rams playoff loss.
Thank you for that record setting Falcons loss in Green Bay.
Thank you for both hideous Bears’ losses last year.
Thank you for that crushing interception in overtime last December, demonstrating that you still have the same decision making skills you had when you drove *****, wiped out your car, and lost your intestines.
Above all, thank you for costing Green Bay as many games as you’ve helped them win. There’s a reason you had #4 on your Jersey- it’s because you’re too stupid to know what 2 + 2 equals. Over the years, you haven’t gotten any smarter, but you’ve made up for it by being more selfish.
Don’t go away mad, just go away. I hope you wind up in Oakland.
