The McGinley family, part owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers, has been so quiet through the years that a lot of NFL fans didn’t know until this week that the Rooneys don’t own the entire team.

But they don’t, and the 20 percent stake that is controlled by the McGinleys could now be in play. However, Steelers fans who don’t want anything to change will be glad to know that Rita McGinley, who owns 10 percent of the Steelers, is unlikely to sell her share.

She just loves the Steelers,”  John R. McGinley Jr. said of his aunt Rita. “She knows all the players and former players, even the ones I’ve forgotten. I doubt that under any circumstances she would consider a sale.”

John and his five siblings each own a little less than 2 percent of the team, and John said he doesn’t know whether any other members of his family would sell their small shares. He does, however, say that among the Rooneys, “I do know there are serious discussions going on. I don’t know how far along they are, but they are farther along than I expected them to be.”

But it sounds like if there is any sale, it won’t involve the 10 percent of the team that Rita McGinley owns.
