In a recent interview with our pal Tim Benz of 105.9 The X in Pittsburgh, Giants receiver Plaxico Burress spoke about the rumors that dogged quarterback Kordell Stewart during their mutual time in Pittsburgh.
“It had to be tough on him personally,” Burress told Benz. “I didn’t call him gay or anything like that. . . . I think that’s one of the reasons why he really couldn’t become the player that he wanted to be. . . . It has to play on you mentally a little bit.”
Burress elaborated on the topic in his new book, Giant: The Road To The Super Bowl, which he wrote with Jason Cole.
“People were talking about [Kordell] being gay,” Burress writes in Chapter 5. “The players heard that, but we never talked about it. I don’t know if Kordell is gay or not. It was none of our business. If ever we would have talked about it, it would have made everybody uncomfortable. If some player was gay, I don’t think he could come out while he was still playing. It would be real hard. It would mess a team up mentally and it wouldn’t be good for that person.”
Burress also said that the rumors caused Stewart to withdraw from teammates. “He had to watch the people that he hung around with. Just hanging out with your friends, or your boys and your cousins, all those things come to the surface. I think he just insulated himself after a while.”
As to Stewart’s performance on the field, Burress confirms what many league observers have long believed. “He wasn’t a real NFL quarterback, a drop-back quarterback,” Burress says. “They gave him time to develop as a classic drop-back passer, but it just never happened. He couldn’t, that wasn’t his game.”

Nice to see that the articles are focused on what is happening now. How about pulling an ESPN and keep doing the Favre articles.

Being Gay is one thing, “Not that there’s anything wrong with that”
But being a bad QB is different, “There IS something wrong with that”!

fartfacekilla ha ha ha dude ur the dumb one for saying that kordell is better than ben. u must be from philly. dont take it out on our QB because your team is a joke and will never win a SB. I understand you are from the arm pit/dumpster/ass crack of american, that cools and all but do your HW actually watch what a winning team does with a great QB such as Ben. I do believe he was the youngest QB to ever win a SB, i also believe he took a 6th seeded team on all road games in the post season to the SB
go Big Ben and go stillers

Seems to me like most of the WR’s are gay. They sure do act like girls… run their mouth… gossip… cry… see the pattern.

I don’t give a sh*t whether or not Kordell or anyone else is gay. And that is one lame excuse as to why he sucked. He was just not NFL caliber and it had nothing to do with sexual orientation.

Shouldn’t make a difference one way or the other if he was gay. but if he was gay, I would suggest trading him to the BIQUEENS where he might find it more comfortable to wear purple (a totally gay color) instead of black (a man’s color). Plus the fans in Mpls would not expect as much from him being that they couldn’t recognize a good quarterback from a bad one as evidenced by T Jack not only being on their roster but starting. A perfect fit.

Maybe someone else can remember the title, but I specifically remember reading a chapter in some “tell-all” football book a few years back about the NFL having in its midst a closeted, gay quarterback, and as I recall, this unnamed player readily gave an interview and talked about his situation. Anyone remember the name of the book?
Putting two and two together, and from reading the new revelations from Plaxico’s tome, I’m starting to wonder out loud if the chapter in the “tell-all” book was referring to Kordell.
That said, as a Steeler fan, I often think about that mid-90s team, and just how close they came to becoming a dynasty. What if Slash would have stayed as Slash? What if O’Donnell stayed a Steeler? What if the team hung on to some of their core defensemen, while building on it with new players? With that all in place, how much better would the Bus have been? I realize Steeler ownership was gearing up for the building of Heinz Field, but I often felt like they threw away their chance for greatness in the late 90s.
To me, it matters little whether or not Kordell is gay. What mattered is that, when given the opportunity, he showed moments of greatness, but followed those up with way too many moments of, at best, mediocrity. In the NFL, that won’t get the job done at quarterback.

Can’t miss an opportunity to point out that Jason Cole is a completely classless writer; and I am glad he is working on a book about the Giants Superbowl because that guarantees that I will never want to read it.

Also I love someone from Pitt saying someone from Philly is from the armpit of America. Baby, you are both the same. I see your point, Pitt is a little more abandoned and it is closer to the sunny paradise that is Cleveland… wait how is Pitt nicer than Philly? Anyway, to the rest of America you are the same so why not kiss and make up.

say it was someone who could whoop ass in the locker room that was gay, maybe ray Lewis, instead of a QB. My guess is that the issue kinda goes away…

Plaxico, you sound so concerned for your former teammate. How nice of you to profit off the misfortunes of your former teammate. Yet you still take the opportunity to retroactively support Stewart from afar. I’m sure he really appreciates you bringing this all up again.
and by the way…
Who the F*#k does Plaxico think he is “writing” a F#*ing BOOK??
Why don’t you try reading one first, you moron.
For that matter why don’t you read your contract? You know the piece of paper that you signed that said you’d play football for “X” amount of dollars. Cause you obviously don’t grasp the concept.

The Steelers and Ben wouldn’t have won the one SB in recent history without the worst case of officiating, on purpose or not, in SB history. Cowher would be seen as a Marty-like choker. Instead he is topping sliced bread on the list of superlatives. (Sounds like Kordell was topping more than that)
