In a recent interview with our pal Tim Benz of 105.9 The X in Pittsburgh, Giants receiver Plaxico Burress spoke about the rumors that dogged quarterback Kordell Stewart during their mutual time in Pittsburgh.
“It had to be tough on him personally,” Burress told Benz. “I didn’t call him gay or anything like that. . . . I think that’s one of the reasons why he really couldn’t become the player that he wanted to be. . . . It has to play on you mentally a little bit.”
Burress elaborated on the topic in his new book, Giant: The Road To The Super Bowl, which he wrote with Jason Cole.
“People were talking about [Kordell] being gay,” Burress writes in Chapter 5. “The players heard that, but we never talked about it. I don’t know if Kordell is gay or not. It was none of our business. If ever we would have talked about it, it would have made everybody uncomfortable. If some player was gay, I don’t think he could come out while he was still playing. It would be real hard. It would mess a team up mentally and it wouldn’t be good for that person.”
Burress also said that the rumors caused Stewart to withdraw from teammates. “He had to watch the people that he hung around with. Just hanging out with your friends, or your boys and your cousins, all those things come to the surface. I think he just insulated himself after a while.”
As to Stewart’s performance on the field, Burress confirms what many league observers have long believed. “He wasn’t a real NFL quarterback, a drop-back quarterback,” Burress says. “They gave him time to develop as a classic drop-back passer, but it just never happened. He couldn’t, that wasn’t his game.”

Oh who really gives a Rat’s Rectum about something that long ago?
Let’s get on with this year. There will be plenty to keep everyone talking.
The NFL isn’t what you did, it’s what you are doing now!

Plax is a selfish bum. End of story. I’m a bengals fan and AVID steeler hater and even i have to say kordell was not as good as ben and if you truely believe that then, wow do you need help. Also, real mature.. Gay jokes about a guy who may or may not be gay. Wonder why the rest of the world hates us.

kordell stewart had some great years. If they let that guy play the game he started with, he would’ve been fun to watch for more than a couple years. I also believe that as soon as they knew he wasn’t the quarterback that they wanted, why didn’t they bring him back to his “slash” position? The guy was a great receiver as well.

This is no mystery. Kordell went to college in Colorado. Mr Garrison is from South Park, Colorado. I rest my case.
I don’t care if he sucked off the field, but I can certainly remember the times he sucked on the field.

@ JimmySmith
Again with that solid attempt at humor - “Biqueens”. What an idiot “Ass-Packer” fan you are. If you want to give them that tired old nickname, it’s “ViQueens”. Calling them “Bi” would make them, well, less gay - so, your “comedic” insult is comedic only because you are an idiot.

A Plaxico Burress book? I guess he’s not as dumb as I thought he was since he realizes the only thing that would probably sell that piece of crap is juicy rumors and opinions about an ex-NFL QB being gay.

The Steelers and Ben wouldn’t have won the one SB in recent history without the worst case of officiating, on purpose or not, in SB history. Cowher would be seen as a Marty-like choker. Instead he is topping sliced bread on the list of superlatives.

Kordell’s biggest problem was that Coach Bill surrounded him with offensive coordinators who refused to play to his strengths. Guys like Kevin Gilbride just didn’t know what they had in Kordell. He was a poor thrower, but he had good arm strength, and was one of the best running quarterbacks I’ve ever seen. In some ways he was about ten years ahead of his time.

To the people hating on the Steelers in the last couple of blogs:
Now, let me get this straight: all you pats fans are putting down my Steelers? You mean to tell me that your team has had maybe 10 winning seasons in its franchise history? I believe that Pittsburgh has had many, many more winning seasons and superbowls than the pats. Furthermore, let’s not discuss things that are absurd; Ben is a great QB.

To all who are hating on the Steelers on the recent blogs:
Now, let me get this straight: The pats had 10 winning seasons in their entire franchise history, compared to Pittsburgh’s many more winning seasons and 5 Superbowl wins. Furthermore, Big Ben is a much better QB than Kordell.
