We like the theory that is being floated by Jean-Jacques Taylor of the Dallas Morning News regarding the status of Cowboys coach Wade Phillips.

Taylor thinks that the head coach’s second season in Dallas will be his final season there.

As Taylor sees it, Phillips either will take the team to a Super Bowl title and call it a career, or he’ll fail to win it all, and be replaced by offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.

We also think there’s a chance that Phillips could win it all and then be pushed out, even if he wants to stay.  Garrett was a hot commodity last year, even though the Cowboys didn’t win a playoff game.  If they win the Super Bowl, Garrett will be in even greater demand.

Also, it’s important to keep in mind the dynamics of the interview process.  The flirtation process between Garrett and other teams would begin during the bye week (if the Cowboys earn a bye).  Owner Jerry Jones might have to be prepared to send a certain wink-nod message to Garrett regarding his future with the team while the season is still unresolved, which could seal Phillips’ fate regardless of how the Cowboys finish the season.
