The football player whom many regard as morally bankrupt is now financially bankrupt as well.
Imprisoned Falcons quarterback Mike Vick, who is doing time due to his dog-fighting activities, has filed for federal bankruptcy protection, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The Virginian-Pilot has the following quote from the filing: “The hope is that [Vick] can, after the conclusion of the bankruptcy case, rebuild his life on a personal and spiritual level, resurrect his image as a public figure, and resolve matters with the NFL such that he can resume his career.”
Vick asserted in the paperwork that he owes between $10 million and $50 million. (It’s unknown whether that amount includes the pack of smokes he borrowed from him cellmate.) Vick’s seven largest creditors are expected to have claims in the range of $12.8 million.
Included among the debts is $3.75 million in signing bonus money to which the Falcons are legally entitled.
We’re not experts in bankruptcy law (we invite any members of PFT Planet who are to chime in via e-mail), but we vaguely recall that there are two types of bankruptcy – liquidation and reorganization. We’re also generally aware that the credit-card lobby helped push through revisions to the bankruptcy laws that make it harder to utilize this device to get a fresh start (and thus to stiff the credit-card companies).
As a practical matter, Vick’s non-exempt assets will be rounded up and redistributed to his creditors. And there are different levels of creditors. Some have priority over others. Those without priority typically are lucky to get 10 cents for each dollar they are owed.
The other twist here is that the bankruptcy rules likely will postpone indefinitely the NFL’s appeal of the ruling that exempted nearly $20 million in bonus money from recovery. Eventually (and again we’re not experts on this), the issue could be resolved under the auspices of the bankruptcy court system.

Kind of feel bad, He never showed violent tendencies anywhere beyond the ring, I think the time in jail is suitable but I really feel he was raised around what was happening so it wasnt a big deal in his head. You’d be suprised how many people actually think of pets as property and not companions. That said he still has what a couple years? and hes already broke. Its hard for someone to try to change their life when everyone is breaking you down. I know he deserved what hes getting but I hope people are interested in him changing his ways and becoming a better person then rotting away for the rest of his life. I have a feeling alot of good can come from this horrible situation if given a chance.

Is he not aware of what he owes, and that number i sosmewhere between $10 and $50 million? How did a range so vast become the window of debt? If I had $20 million in bonus money (guaranteed) I would certainly at a minimum know if my debt was above or below that number.

Come on Florio! I thought you were an attorney!
Everybody knows there are 2 personal types of bankruptcy. Chapter 7 which wipes out all the debts, and Chapter 13 which is a 5 year repayment plan.
Betting Vick filed a Chapter 7.

Liquidation (Chapter 7) and Reorganization (Chapter 11) are types of bankruptcy used mostly for companies or, in Vick’s case, individuals with a large amount of debt. If Vick is forced to file Chapter 7, his property will be sold and doled out to the creditors to satisfy debts…he may be discharged of some debt in this case. If he files Chapter 11, which is mostly applicable to businesses as I understand, he will have to essentially negotiate with creditors as to what he will repay when he resumes work (assuming he does). Vick can also file for Chapter 13 as an individual, though it might not be granted, because it is rehabilitation with a payment plan for individuals with a steady source of income. One could argue Vick may have a steady income when he’s out of jail and is able to play some type of football again, but he currently does not and thus might not be granted a Chapter 13 filing. That repayment usually is over 3-5 years and to be granted a Chapter 13 is, if I recall correctly, the most difficult to obtain. I’m fairly certain that’s how it all works, my apologies if I am incorrect, hope it helps.

No sympathy here for the prick. The fact that dogfighting is an underground operation carries with it the possibilities of extreme legal ramifications. I hope he is still learning his lesson.
The dogs he killed (as well as those that he didn’t) have suffered far more than his overextended bank account.

since there is $20M of bonus money reportedly in the balance (despite arbitration etc)… that is why it is $30M +or- $20M. Thus the gap between $10M and $50M…

Vick is a contemptible savage who deserves no sympathy. The dogs that he tortured and murdered were far more valuable members of society than the self absorbed miscreant, Michael Vick. The only people more disgusting than Vick are the mindless imbeciles who continue to make excuses for his sub-human behavior.
