The football player whom many regard as morally bankrupt is now financially bankrupt as well.
Imprisoned Falcons quarterback Mike Vick, who is doing time due to his dog-fighting activities, has filed for federal bankruptcy protection, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The Virginian-Pilot has the following quote from the filing: “The hope is that [Vick] can, after the conclusion of the bankruptcy case, rebuild his life on a personal and spiritual level, resurrect his image as a public figure, and resolve matters with the NFL such that he can resume his career.”
Vick asserted in the paperwork that he owes between $10 million and $50 million. (It’s unknown whether that amount includes the pack of smokes he borrowed from him cellmate.) Vick’s seven largest creditors are expected to have claims in the range of $12.8 million.
Included among the debts is $3.75 million in signing bonus money to which the Falcons are legally entitled.
We’re not experts in bankruptcy law (we invite any members of PFT Planet who are to chime in via e-mail), but we vaguely recall that there are two types of bankruptcy – liquidation and reorganization. We’re also generally aware that the credit-card lobby helped push through revisions to the bankruptcy laws that make it harder to utilize this device to get a fresh start (and thus to stiff the credit-card companies).
As a practical matter, Vick’s non-exempt assets will be rounded up and redistributed to his creditors. And there are different levels of creditors. Some have priority over others. Those without priority typically are lucky to get 10 cents for each dollar they are owed.
The other twist here is that the bankruptcy rules likely will postpone indefinitely the NFL’s appeal of the ruling that exempted nearly $20 million in bonus money from recovery. Eventually (and again we’re not experts on this), the issue could be resolved under the auspices of the bankruptcy court system.

policemen kill an innocent man about to get married the next day nothing happens to them and there is hardly any outrage out of the media or american public but when everyone found out mike vick fought dogs you would have thought he killed the president, Thats how much value is placed on a black mans life in america a dog gets more respect.

HA HUH! Good! I love watching his life fall apart. I hope that scumbag loses everything and lives on the streets with his loser brother. There will be no tears shed for him! I just wish they treated him like he treated those dogs.

Well there are several different mitigating factors, including that the guy was trying to run the cops over with his car. The fact that he had violent criminal past. These animals are innocent and don’t know the difference.
Judging by your comments, I’m guessing your an African-American? If so, instead of playing the “race card” and blaming everyone else, why don’t you admit that in both of these cases, these convicted felons were wrong.
And for the record, the dog should get more respect in this case, they are innocent animals who don’t know any better and only fight because they were taught to do so. Stop making excuses and for once, accept responsibility.

As usual, you people are showing your stupidity. Bankruptcy doesn’t always mean BROKE dummies, it sometimes means you don’t intend to pay anyone and will kee (most of) your money, thus BANKRUPTCY PROTECTION. Vick wins here, the Falcons defenitely lose cause they can’t get sh*t now, and to the dog lovers, we still fight dogs, so nothing really changed. And to the two commenters who referred to prison rapes, gay jokes are like, so gay and white guys get raped in prison, not black guys. Y’all so used to it coming out of the backwoods that you think its a joke, get help faggots, you need it…. Oh yeah, one more time, Vick won, the people he owes lose here.

Mike Vick has to be the dumbest professional athlete the world has ever seen. Even dumber than Cryin Ryan Leaf, and that’s pretty dumb.
As for him playing in Canada, he’ll never make it across the border, legally.
With the way Michael and Marcus turned out, does anybody else here think Momma Vick should be charged with unlawful creation?

Sean Bell wasn’t a convicted felon and he didn’t even crank his car up before the police started shooting, and bottom line whether you like it or not a dog is not more important than a human life, you are totally correct dogs do fight because humans make them horses run because humans make them also, but because one is considered a sport and the other not does not justify the public lynching mike vick went through, and last A DOG WILL NEVER GET MORE RESPECT FROM ME THAN I WOULD GIVE A HUMAN BEING. Like you said those dogs were bred for fighting just as chickens are bred for eating and horses are bred for running dont make him a low life because you dont understand where he is from or his culture. AND NO I AM NOT BLACK
I AM WHITE AS TYPING PAPER IM JUST MORE CONCERNED WITH HUMAN RIGHTS THAN DOG FIGHTING. P.S. FREE MIKE VICK!!!!!!!!!!

The poor guy is now living in the dog house!
I don’t feel for this guy at all. He always presented himself as a “hoodie” thug. Well, it led him right down a very predictable path of self destruction. Go figure. You’d think that thugs will eventually start to realize that they can’t beat the fabric of society into submission.
You know what they say, if you can’t beat em, join em. Hopefully, this will send a much needed message to many young people that you’d better straighten up or your time will come - and it won’t be pretty.

Vick is a smooth operator as evidenced by his illegal operation over several years. Vick may be filing for bankruptcy but he would not be legally bankrupt if he is hiding millions somewhere–this would be defrauding the U.S. Government. Is U.S. v. Vick II in the works?

BBrophy1 - When someone files for bankruptcy protection, the bankruptcy petition has a chart on the first where the debtor checks off “estimated assets” and “estimated liabilities.” It’s just a range. The debtor’s schedules which are to be filed contemporaneously with his petition, but may be filed some time afterward, list the individual assets and libialities with specificity. I doubt the AP was going to read through all the schedules when the information they wanted was on the first page. I hope that helps
