A Pennsylvania police official best known for leading the investigation of the shooting death of five Amish schoolgirls has been appointed to the new post of NFL director of strategic security.

It is not clear exactly what Col. Jeffrey Miller’s responsibilities will be. The Associated Press story reporting the appointment of Miller begins, “The NFL hired Pennsylvania’s police chief to make sure there are no more signal-stealing scandals like the one involving the New England Patriots last season.” But the NFL has given no indication that Miller’s job will be to make sure there’s not another Spygate.

Whatever his day-to-day duties are, Miller called the appointment a dream job.

“When I grew up, all I wanted to be was a state trooper,” Miller said. “I saw them come to my school when I was young and I said, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ Now to move to the private sector for another career, I just can’t believe the good fortune to work with the professionals at the National Football League.”

Miller was appointed to his current job of Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner in 2003.
