With G.M. Ted Thompson attempting to resolve a personnel dilemma that could bring his career with the Packers to an abrupt end, a familiar face is returning to town.
As several readers have pointed out, former G.M. Ron Wolf is moving from Annapolis, Maryland back to Green Bay.
Wolf was single-handedly responsible for bringing Favre to the Packers. Wolf tried in 1991 as an employee of the Jets to draft Favre, but the Falcons got to him first. Wolf then swung a deal with Atlanta to get Favre to Green Bay after Wolf became the G.M. there.
Though Wolf surely isn’t interested in emerging from retirement, plenty of Packers fans likely will be contemplating the possibility of swapping out Thompson for Wolf, if Thompson refuses to allow Favre to return to the Packers.
And though we don’t know much about whether the Packers’ shareholders have the ability to launch a revolt against Thompson or CEO Mark Murphy at the annual meeting on July 24, we have a feeling that more than a few folks who own one or more shares of the franchise are considering their options for making known their desire that the most beloved player in team history should be permitted to come back, if he wants.
While we’re on the topic (again), here’s a new PFTV segment that looks at what the Packers might do with the most troublesome issue that the franchise likely has ever faced. (And, yeah, I didn’t wear a tie for this week’s PFTV segments. It reminded me of one of those dreams where I show up in court wearing a bathrobe, or with my underwear over my suit pants. Wait, the last one wasn’t a dream.)

Florio, you’re really out-doing yourself with the reaching and the resulting hyperbole here. This is far from the most difficult issue the GBP have ever faced, unless your knowledge of the team’s history only dates back about 17 years. TT’s handling of this issue will not result in his ‘abrupt end’ to his career in GB, unless he dresses Favre up in a Little Bo Peep outfit and dances his semi-conscious body out on the 50-yard-line at Lambeau at halftime.
Seriously, I know it’s the slow time of year, but perhaps you could fixate on something else for awhile. Those of us who have been GBP fans for longer than the time Favre has been around really wouldn’t mind to see the vetting of GB Favre fans. Move on.

This is so stupid it is hard to believe. The Packer fans might be loyal but there is only one GM in GB and that is TT. He is being paid to do his job and if he had to worry about what a bunch of fans thought, he couldn’t please anyone.
Favre, in case you didn’t notice, didn’t exactly tear it up during the playoff games these past 10 years. How many playoff games did the Packers lose in OT due to Brett Favre INT’s? (answer is 2). How many INT’s did Brett throw in the playoff loss to St. Louis (I think the answer is 6). TT is well within his rights to move on at this point.

“With G.M. Ted Thompson attempting to resolve a personnel dilemma that could bring his career with the Packers to an abrupt end”
Florio: this is sensationalistic BS, on your behalf.
Wolf is in his 70s; Thompson was 13-4 last season. Despite constant lambasting, I’m beginning to really like his effort.
*Read* the posts on your own site (or the Press-Gazette, Journal Sentinel, or WI State Journal). GB fans are getting sick and tired of the Farve sh!t.
Good or bad — I’m ready for a change. This stuff Brett’s pulling is NOT team-oriented…

The “shares” are worthless pieces of paper that were sold to GB fans. “shareholders” retain no voting rights- and to the best of my knowlege there is no secondary market for the shares except maybe ebay. The meetings are put on by the packers as more of a large pep rally for the upcoming season.

I’ll bet there are nearly as many Favre fans that would want him back as there are fans that will back Thompson, and herein lays the conundrum. This will split the fan base about in half.
Everyone knows what they say about a house divided.
Green Bay is the laughing stock of the NFL right now, and hands down favorites to remain that way for the foreseeable future.

I’m quite tired of the Brett Favre anticts, as an outsider. For the past, what, six seasons this guy has toyed with retirement. Now that he’s finally retired, he wants to come back and play?
Ofcourse, Favre’s agent is making Thompson look like the villain saying the GM forced Favre’s hand to retire, blah blah blah.
Also, all of this attention is also villafying (sp?) Favre, which for most fans not of the GBP (proud member of the non-Packer fan group here), is already too easy.
Its slow, yes, but I’d rather read about the CFL.

With all the speculation, where is the hard reporting? Such as what does this do to the Salary Cap for the Packers? Did they spend the money, thinking he was retired and will be in a Cap bind if he comes back? Let’s answer the real issues here!

Your contempt for all things “Packer” is quite thinly veiled.
I recall a recent post (ie: the Buc rookie fight at the symposium) referring to Packer staff/team/etc as troublemakers. There have been others.
With your talent for talking smack, may I assume you’re a Viking fan, but too chickensh!t to admit on the forum ????

Most beloved player in team history? I think you’re selling the hype that is Favre’s career way too short. There’s no dispute that he’s the most beloved player in LEAGUE history. Certainly there’s dispute as to whether that love is deserved…

Always nice to hear from “Hot Tub Markie”…
But seriously folks, it’s going to take a while longer for the Favre topic to resolve itself, unfortunately. It will continue at least through training camp and possibly the early pre-season.
And the national interest in Favre is hard to dismiss.

The Packer shareholders DO have a voice: it’s called marketing, PR, spending money, etc., etc.
The Packer franchise absolutely needs the fans to do things like shop at the Packer fan shop, visit Lambeau Field and spend money there, and generally pay the price because the only “owner” here is the fans.
The fans own this team. And the Packer franchise better listen closely because there is nothing except fan spending to ensure the continuation of the franchise.

What Brett Favre is doing is unfair to the organization — but namely Aaron Rodgers. If he was going to have the itch to comeback, why retire in the fashion that he did in the first place?

Dear PkrNboro,
Yes, 40to60, aptly named after his IQ score is a Biqueens fan, in case you didn’t notice, he is as stupid as the day is long and that alone would qualify him to actually coach the Queens but they already have their resident Idiot in Childress.
The problem is that Favre has been beating the Queens (4 straight at this point) so soundly that the Queens fans are purple with rage. 40 less 60 feels a particular need to vent since their own starting QB has a career QB rating that is coincidentally the same as his IQ (69) and has about as much chance at the HOF as 40 less 60 has with women (his blow up doll excluded)

It’s a shame that Brett Favre gets friggin’ 80% of the news “stories” here on PFT, especially considering that in the grand scheme of things, he doesn’t make a pimple on Bart Starr’s ass.
1 Super Bowl win, the most INTs thrown in NFL history, 12-10 career playoff record, and of those games, he’s 3-10 since 1997. Not to mention, he’s the ONLY QB, EVER to throw 2 INTs in overtime playoff games.
Newsflash, GB fans: Favre is washed up, and you’re better off with Aaron Rodgers. Favre hasn’t been worthy of all the praise heaped upon him since 1997, face it.

It kind of sounds like the packers want Farve to just go away.
My guess is they wouldn’t mind having him another year. But he costs so much. They’ve got to build a team now for the future.
