The late Terrence Kiel, a former Chargers safety, was attending a party at the home of suspended Chargers linebacker Stephen Cooper on the evening of Kiel’s death, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Kiel had just left the party on July 4 when he crashed his car, and was ejected from the vehicle.
Some of the guests tried to stop Kiel from leaving the party because he had been drinking.
Cooper was suspended four games in April for violating the league’s policy against anabolic steroids and related substances.

I am not familiar with the state law, but does this make Cooper in some way partly liable, negligent or contributing to the death of Keil?

Good point. He very well could be if someone got hurt, outside of Kiel. But under the Dram Shop Act (which is the law that holds parties liable for serving alcohol) the party host is only liable to a 3rd party’s injury (if Kiel hit another car/person), not to the patron who had been drinking and having a good time.

Maybe the people at the party should have tried a little harder to stop Kiel from
driving, like maybe taking his keys. What exactly did they do?

But heck how much could they do? Even the report says they tried to stop him from leaving. At some point you can’t be someone’s daddy.

Let’s cut the bull here and focus on the issue: a grown man made a decision and that’s all that matters. Whatever happened to personal accountability in this country? It’s always someone else’s fault. “Well don’t blame me, it’s his fault for over-serving me!” It’s ridiculous. You’re an adult, you knew what you were doing, you knew the consequences and you did it anyway, deal with the repercussions. You are not a victim. End. Of. Story.

Cooper ought to be thrown out of the league.
Imagine hosting a 4th of July pool party at your own house for friends where a guest drove away at 10:30 PM after other guests attempted to prevent him from leaving..
A totally un-American activity that Goodell should not overlook.

Is Cooper not allowed to have a party at his house? I love when people assume stuff, apparently these people tried pretty hard to stop him from what I hear.

Wow, you are a moron. A man died here because of his own bad decision. It’s sad. But no, let’s make negative comments about people when you don’t know anything. If it comes out that Cooper forced Kiel to get drunk and drive home, then let’s blame him. The police didn’t even go to Coopers house to investigate anything. And as of now, all we’ve heard is Kiel showed up drunk, was there for 10 minutes, had a fight with his girlfriend who was there, then left when people told him not to drive. He was on the phone with the girl when he crashed and now his life is over. It’s sad, like that comment.

I agree with DarthJay to some point….however I am a little more sympathetic with the lost of a life, regardless of how the death occured….at the same time, individuals did try to stop him from driving and it was ultimately his decision to drive, so he is only to blame for what happened…but in the end, there was a life lost and i know it must be hard for those that tried to stop him because they may feel bad for not trying harder or doing something different or saying something different…bottom line is that it’s just a sad story and i feel really bad for his family and friends, for their lost, and for those who tried to prevent such a tragedy. The one thing that really sticks out in my mind about this, and it’s crazy, but I loved playing with him on the Madden games because of his crazy speed….and then i finally saw him in action a few times on NFL Sunday Ticket…and he just vanished, and I never heard about him again until his death….so sad

No doubt, like the Aunt of the pregnant woman who was killed at a club where a fight took place and Grant may have been a part of the scuffle, someone will sue Cooper.
We all know its his fault someone died. How could it be Keil’s fault? How can you blame a dead man? So, where there is money, someone will sue. Fantastic!

Moral of this story; don’t have anything to drink and get behind a wheel of a car. I did and now I’m a quadriplegic.

Hey, once a person is extremely drunk, it’s difficult to make an intelligent decision. If you’re going to drink, the smartest thing to do is not to drive there in the first place. Even if you have no intention of driving to the party, drinking and catching a cab home…once you get drunk, you forget your plans and drive home anyway. Although friends don’t let friends drink and drive, it’s pretty hard to stop a friend from driving sometimes! Smartest decision, don’t drive to the party! No other person should be blamed for Kiel’s decision, but it’s a sad country when you can sue for anything you want just to try to get a few bucks!

It is always hard to hear about young people dying. At only 25 years old I am still one bad decision away from the grave. Hopefully someone can learn from this and it can prevent future deaths, though I doubt it.

Is anyone forgetting the fact the he couldn’t have been wearing a seat belt? Ejected from the vehicle equals totally unnecessary death. Terrible to lose a life, but I was once told by a cop; “I’ve never had to unbuckle a body from a wreck.”
Meaning, seat belts save lives. If he wore one, we’d be calling him a turd because he got arrested after smashing his car into a tree.

I’m surprised Monger wasn’t on this post bashing Chargers fans. Oh wait, that’s only the Pats’ fans that are classless I forgot.
On a serious note, what a terrible waste of a life. My prayers are with the Kiel family. R.I.P.
