Peter King weighs in on the Brett Favre saga this morning and predicts that the quarterback will formalize his return in the next 10 days.
“I fully expect Favre’s agent to send a letter to the Packers within the next 10 days, stating that Favre, 38, wants to be taken off the National Football League’s reserve/retired list.”
King goes on to discuss a conversation between Favre and Mike McCarthy in which the Packer coach tells the quarterback that he’d be putting the team in a tough spot if he sent that letter. In short order the Packers will have to decide if they want Favre to be their starting quarterback, if they want to trade him or if they have to release him in order to grant his wish of returning to the NFL. King says G.M. Ted Thompson isn’t returning calls from Bus Cook and indicates that the team would prefer turning the page and moving on with Aaron Rodgers.
As PFT’s reported, rumors are swirling that Favre wants to be playing somewhere other than Green Bay so it would seem to be the easiest route to happiness on both sides. King ultimately believes the team will take Favre back because the alternatives — a trade or release — opens the door to them looking foolish if Favre plays well in a different uniform.

Dear Brett,
You have been a blast to watch over the last two decades. I was watching the game with my dad back in 92 when you first came in. I’ve never missed a game and have always been one of your biggest fans, advocates, defenders, and supporters. When you were young, we could all see the thrill of the game in your eyes. The thrill that so few players show these days. It’s all become showcasing and it seems the true love of the game has died. Players are motivated more by money than pride and glory.
You represent the death of a true hero, role model football player. You are to football what Darth Vader was to the force. That’s the only explanation I can give. Where once you were a champion of good, you have now turned to the darkside. You have been corrupted by vanity. Where you once stood for loyalty, truth, and determination, you have now sold out, like so many of the current generation of players. First hero, now villain. You will be remembered as the villain, not the hero, if you play for another team.
What do you care if Ted Thompson wants you back? We the fans wanted you back. We clamored in a furious roar for your return after such a memorable season. An entire state wants you back, so why are you so upset if Ted Thompson didn’t beg? We know you’ve still got it. To most of these people you are an idol. You’re a hero to children, and an example for men. I’m sure in time, as things do, your acts will remebered and take on a life of their own and you will be more than an icon in football, you’ll take your place among the legends.
I hope, unlike your hasty decision to retire, you think about coming back and playing for a different team a little more. You will become Darth Favre. The biggest TRAITOR in history. You will be booed. No amount of money will ever be able to buy your dignity back. You will be shamed by these fans until the day you die.
Do the right thing and stay retired. As much as I would love to have you back, you will have wasted a whole offseason of players, coaches, team personnel, and most of all the fans’ time.
Let’s be honest. If you come back, you have one option and it’s to play for the Packers, Super Bowl or bust. I know you can do it, and this is the only team you have a chance with which to win.
You yourself have said this is the most talented team you have been around. Look how young they are. Look how far you made it last year. I could tell you were surprised in your press confrences. They will continue to surprise you. I have kids, you have kids, as they grow they always do unexpected things you had no idea they could do. This team is no different.
You won’t have the same chemistry with a new team. No way will you be as successful in a new offense as you would be with the Packers. You will be a hired gun for a year and then you will be forgotten by that team’s fans. Don’t do this to your loyal fans.
-A fan

What an awful situation this is turning out to be.
GB keeps Favre, Rodgers gets screwed and in turn will say ’screw you’ to the Packers in two years.
Favre gets cut, and 2 of his top suitors are in the division and (arguably) a QB away from serious contention. Can anyone even picture this (probably most likely) scenario from happening?
Favre gets traded for peanuts. Destroys his (and the Packers) rep in the bitter process.

Favre to Vikings and go to the Superbowl… which they will then lose to the Patriots. You heard it here first.

At this point, if Favre comes back and the Parkers keep him, they would be merely renting a QB for a season which would have a negative effect on the Aaron Rogers Project.
But the real dilemma is that any playoff-caliber team would be foolish to turn down his services if available—and the Parkers are a playoff-caliber team!

Looks like the “Ageless Gunslinger” is ready to lace up the cleats again for one more season. I for one like it I can’t really imagine an NFL season with Farve not under center. I hope he still plays for Green Bay it would be wierd watching him QB the Vikings, Bears, Bucs, or anywhere else for that matter. Maybe Atlanta just because that is where it all began for him, but naw it would just be bizzaro world.
I wish people would just quit whining about this it’s the slow season in the NFL and all the news comming out is basicly players getting arrested for dumbass stuff. At least Farve’s inability to make up his mind has real impact on the league and gives us fodder for debate. The guy can still play and if he wants to he should until he shows that he can’t get it done. He’s the last of great generation of QBs that we all got to watch in the 80’s and 90’s let him hold on to it.

Peter King would know. His school girl crush on Favre has turned into a fullblown stalker obsession over the years. I remember reading an article by him on a dinner he had with Favre and it read like a schoolgirl writing in her diary about her date with the captain of the football team.
I think Favre should just stay retired. He made his choice and he should just stick to it. It is enough of him putting Green Bay in this position over and over again every offseason. The Packers are in a bind on whether to keep him and screw over Rodgers or trade him away for nothing.
I think Favre will make a mistake because the teams he could get traded to are not going to run the offense he is used to running and Favre already has the propensitity to make poor decisions when under pressure.

The Packers are stupid if this is true.
If Favre wants to play for the Packers, you roll out the freaking red carpet. He’s the best player they’ve EVER had. Seriously, I can’t believe this is even a thing.
You want to move on with Aaron Rogers? Come on, Packer-land. He’s going to be terrible at best. You think he’s a superstar in waiting? I have a Brian Greise and a Jay Feidler that say he isn’t.

I really see this playing out in 3 ways:
1) As Peter the cornball King said, The Packers and Favre agree to a trade to a team that is outside the division. I don’t know who that is, unless a major injury happens.
2) and in my somewhat humble opinion, the most probable scenario, they agree to bring him back under the condition that training camp will be an open competition. Favre will win the job and they can tell Rodgers, “well look you just didn’t beat out a legend, no shame in that”. Even if they enternally piss off Rodgers, they still have Brohm and Flynn.
3) same as #2 but Rodgers gets the starting position, doesnt play well early on and Favre is back starting in week 4.

I used to be annoyed by the annual Favre retirement will he / won’t he talk, but now I have embraced it for all of it’s hilariousness. One reason is because it pisses so may people off, and the other is because I’m glad that it’s not my team.

I think Favre would be a very solid option at BACKUP QB. If Lord Favre sends this letter, then I think the Pack should send him a clipboard.

First:
The Packers should let him know they’ll take him back, but that he’ll be the BACKUP to Rodgers. He has no contractual leverage and will decide to stay retired.
Second:
I am SO SICK of all things related to Brett Farve. Please GO AWAY ALREADY!!! If he comes back, we’ll have to endure “All Hail Farve” stories the next time he retires, including seeing his first comeback win on the NFLN another seven times.
THIRD:

after the season was over, i wanted brett favre to come back for one more season. but he retired. i was shocked at first. i didnt think he would want to leave the game on that interception. but he announced and the packers moved on the aaron rodgers. had he announced he was coming back rather than retiring, id have been all for it….then. now, i feel like the wife on castaway…like my husband has been gone for years and thought dead. ive remarried and he shows up on my doorstep. and unfortunately, this will probably end up the same, with brett being forced to leave the packers and ending up at a cross-roads trying to decide where to play…or to stay retired.

Am I (or others) overlooking something here? I would think that the main problem for the Pack here is the $10-$12 million that Favre would be getting on his ‘existing’ contract if he came back. I’m not certain, but would think that the Pack would have utilized that ‘available’ money on other players after Favre told them he was done!! If so, now they would have to cut how many players to make that money available to Favre? I wonder if this was Favre’s intention all along…..was he tired of Green Bay and wanted out? I’ll tell them I’m retiring, wait ’til the start of training camp and say I want back in, and it’ll force the team to let me go? This act might just add to his legend…..as in legendary manipulation.
