These few weeks before training camps open are a dead time in the NFL, so it was nice of ESPN to survey the NFL’s 32 head coaches and give the fans a lot of material for arguments.
The latest report from that survey: NFL head coaches were asked to identify which player they thought teams would select first overall in a league-wide draft of current players, if every single player in the league were available.
Twenty-nine of the 32 head coaches responded to the question, and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady won handily, with 22 votes. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning was second with six votes.
The one other vote went to Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor, which probably means that Dolphins coach Tony Sparano decided to vote for Taylor in an attempt to give the impression that there’s a burgeoning trade market for him.

@gallaghedj311 -
By your reasoning, Trent Dilfer is a better QB than Dan Marino. Roethlisberger’s 22.6 passer rating in the Super Bowl was the worst ever by a winning QB. The Steelers won that game with a good defense, good running game, and extremely favorable officiating. Don’t make yourself look like a moron by giving him credit for that SB win.
Roethlisberger is good at escaping pressure, and has a decent arm, but he couldn’t read a defense to save his life. When the Steelers win, it’s generally not because he put the team on his back and carried them. He’s been lucky to play on good teams with fantastic O-lines.

Do the posters (posers?) that say that Brady sucks really believe they have ANY credibility? I’m surprised that the split between Brady and Manning was so one-sided, but to say Brady sucks is just ignorant……and tiring!! I enjoy the sharing of ideas and people intelligently expressing differing views, but the idiocy prevelant in here has become incredibly tedious.

Hey Chrisjnelson and the other jokers calling Brady overrated, do you know what they say about glass houses? Calling 2/3rds of the coaches dumb shows how much you can bring to the table.
The coaches have spoken, so there really is no longer a debate left about who is the better QB of this generation, or really since the 80’s. It’s Brady in a walk; everyone else is trying to get their piece of history when a lucky break goes the other way.
Face facts fellas, Brady’s the best and the coaches officially agree and there’s nothing you can say on this forum to prove otherwise!!
Sure Peyton MIGHT have the stronger arm but obviously that’s not all that counts.

You also have to take into account that Carson has no defense to speak of. They’ve scored 35pts and still lost games because the D can’t stop anyone.

I wonder how many rings Payton would have if he knew the defense before the snap?
Here’s a short list of qb’s who could have 3 rings if they knew the D before the snap: Kyle Orton, Tim Couch, Tim Hasselbeck, Spurgeon Wynn, Marcus Vick.

Absolutely ridiculous. Big Ben is terrible. Didn’t he lead the league in INT’s a few seasons back? He’s always had good receivers, always had a good running game to support him, always had a good defense to bail him out, and always had good special teams play, which leads to good field position. And you can’t say he didn’t have a decent o-line when he’s been playing with one of the best guards in the league (Faneca) for years. I’m not a big Cincy fan, but Carson would have knocked you guys out of the playoffs if Von Oelhoffen didn’t cheap shot him and take out his knee. And the Steelers didn’t earn that Superbowl win, the refs gave it to them. That being said, I’d take Manning over Brady. Looking at their play I noticed Brady just puts the ball in the air a lot, and

Big Ben is nowhere close to Brady and Manning. Didn’t he lead the league in int’s a few seasons back? You can’t say he hasn’t had a good o-line when he’s been playing with one of the best guards (Faneca) in the league for years. He’s always had a good defense to bail him out, he’s always had good receivers, he’s always had great special teams play which leads to good field position, and he’s always had a good running game to rely on. Manning did it without a defense for most of his career, and the Colts running game has been up and down since they drafted him. Brady has done it without solid offensive playmakers for most of his career. I’m not a big Cincy fan, but Carson would have knocked you guys out of the playoffs if Von Oelhoffen didn’t cheap shot him, and take out his knee. And They didn’t earn that Superbowl win, the refs gave it to them. Ask any non-steelers fan who watched the game, and they’ll tell you it’s true. That being said, I’d take Manning over Brady. I don’t think there anything Brady can do that Manning can’t, and Manning can make some throws that Brady can’t make. The spygate thing makes me a little skeptical too. Brady was great last year, when he had the #1 receiving core in the league, but how good would he have been throughout his career with no stolen signal tapes to study?

Brady is definitely better than Manning. Manning generally hasn’t stepped up in big games. He’s more of a regular season quarterback. The Colts wouldn’t have won any of those playoff games on the way to their super bowl win if their defense didn’t play like they did. He threw 7 ints to 2 or 3 tds in the post season that year.
Someone asked what Manning would be like with average talent. Didn’t he throw six picks that game both Harrison and Dallas Clark missed?
Brady threw for over 4,000 yards with pretty god awful receivers prior to last season.
Brady has also shown he can be a gun slinger when needed or a game manager when that is more appropriate.
Brady is also a better teammate. There are those games you’ve seen Manning chewing out his offensive line, whom he threw under the bus after the playoff loss to the steelers. I read he still blames Dallas Clark for an int he threw in the super bowl. Also, look at the players’ contracts…. Brady has a well below market contract to help the coaching staff field a better team.

What in the world is wrong with some of you people. Of course you take Brady with the #1 pick. Its not even close. All the guy does is perform and win. Manning is great too but he isn’t the leader that Brady is. anyone taking any other QB is insane. The Jason Taylor thing was funny.as well. Im a Cowboys fan and think Romo’s a good QB, but im no fool. Brady is the best player in the league hands down

Manning and Brady are both great QB’s, without a doubt the best two in the league. Anybody stating they wouldn’t trade their current teams QB for either one straight up, is most likely a Pats/Colts fan, or a blind homer. Both players represent an immediate upgrade over any other QB in the league. Including the team I support.
It would be nice to know what the reasoning for the coaches decisions are. I think Manning has a better overall grasp of the game, but he’s also got an ego bigger than the size of his forehead. That, coupled with his propensity to throw his 0-line, the kicker, and anyone else he sees, under the buss, does indicate some lack of true leadership. Brady, I think is a less selfish player, but he also has a well documented history for whining to the refs about calls not going his way, and has the stigma of being somewhat of a classless prick.
Of course, since Romo and the ‘boys have yet to so much as win a playoff game, this glass house I’m in is suddenly looking like a bad place to be throwing stones….

TheRealDeal2431,
You can’t compare them that way. Because I bet if you switched the two QB’s situations and Brady would be on pace to break every QB record and Manning would have the rings. I am a Pats fan and think they are both close. Manning had the advantage of having a Hall of Fame receiver his entire career along with a solid line and a great RB and other receivers in that time. Other than last year, Brady had average at best and many times just mediocre talent around him on offense, but was blessed with a great defense and Belichick.
Any reasonable person wouldn’t pick either 10 times out of 10 as to who is better. I would pick Brady 10 times out of 10 if I was starting a franchise and I knew the talent around the QB was going to be average or weak. We don’t know what Manning can do without premere talent around him, but we know Brady can perform with a guy like Reche Caldwell as his primary WR.

This poll was a no-brainer. Brady has an advantage given that his 4 AFC Championships and 4 NFL Championships would leave more of an impression on the 5 current headcoaches who were standing on the sidelines of those games, as well as their assistants who went on to become current headcoaches. Peyton’s 1 AFC Championship and 1 NFL Championship does not leave the same impression.

Zero.
But no really…keep giving Brady 100% of the credit for the Pats 3 SBs. It only helps me separate the mainstream sports media lemmings from the intelligent NFL fans.

@cantgetenough - Your pass rush arguement is a moot point. People have been blitzing Manning and Brady their entire careers, and you’re relating everything back to one game where the Pat’s Oline was horrendous. And between them they still have 4 Super Bowls. I think they are both great QB’s and we are lucky to be an era where we can see them compete against each other. I’d take Tom Brady over Manning just because of the garbage he’s had at wide receiver for so many years. every single WR that left New England did nothing since then including former Super Bowl MVP Deion Branch. For a good deal of that time, he had a decent running attack, but nowhere near as good as Manning has had. Antwan Smith sucked after 2001, Corey Dillon was decent albeit a shell of his former self… and Lawerance Maroney… well we’re still waiting for that to develop.

Big Dumb Ben is stupid, doesn’t have a great arm, and just throws the ball up to Hines. He hides behind a great run game. And this bad line u talk about….what the hell is wrong with you…the Steelers had a great line while Ben has been starting.
Shit Big Dumb Ben isn’t even the best QB on his TEAM.
Best in the NFL???? Damn dude u gotta be smokin weed laced with plastic pellets.
Who in the right mind would even put Ben in the top 40 QBs in the NFL???
Manning is the smartest QB in the NFL. And quite possibly has the best arm.
Brady is a very smart QB, and has the second best arm.
Brady gets the nod because he is younger.
Big Dumb Ben gets no votes cuz he sucks. I’d take back Ray Lucas on the Phins before I got Ben on my team….
Delusional Morons these days…..
